HeadScratcher No. 59: What's up, docs!

164052__ks_lSo what do Tommy Chong, Dixie Chicks, Al Franken, John Lennon, and Kiefer Sutherland have in common? They’re all the subjects of documentaries currently making the rounds in theaters. Chong appears in the puff piece a/k/a Tommy Chong. The ”Not Ready to Make Nice” singers are the focus of Dixie Chicks: Shut Up and Sing. Al Franken: God Spoke tracks the political satirist and possible Minnesota senatorial candidate. The U.S. vs. John Lennon recounts how the rocker’s 1970s activism landed him on Nixon’s enemies list. And I Trust You To Kill Me is about Sutherland’s efforts managing an indie rock band, efforts that included protecting his charges from murderous Christmas trees.

Several of you got this one right. (Joe Cortazzi not only knew the answer but also wants extra credit for coming up with several synonyms for the verb ”to document.” So here’s to ya, Joe!) Many of you thought the common thread was antiwar sentiment, being spied on by the FBI, or run-ins with the Bush administration. But John Lennon died before any Bushes took office as president or vice president. As for Sutherland (pictured), I’m not aware of any antiwar or anti-Bush sentiments he’s expressed. Unless you count his starring in 24, whose last season portrayed the president as a feckless, lying, treasonous enabler of terrorists. So there’s that.

The most creative answer came from R. Barber of Hangzhou, China, who said all five had taken heat for a five-letter word:

Tommy Chong: S-M-O-K-E
Dixie Chicks: S-H-A-M-E
Al Franken: I-R-O-N-Y
John Lennon: P-E-A-C-E
Kiefer Sutherland: J-U-L-I-A

(The names of those who gave correct answers unspool after the jump.)

    John Lennon’s word also could’ve been J-E-S-U-S.

My guess was that they all hate America, but I was too lazy to send that one in.

Go to this web page where you can place a bid on an autographed shirt from Tommy Chong. All proceeds go to the Rialto Square Theater Campaign. http://wccq.com/pages/357461.php
