Weekend To-Do List: Second Chances Edition

151639__fhuffman02_l_1 Third time’s the charm? Desperate Housewives starts up again on Sunday (ABC, 9 p.m.), and you know you’re gonna watch it. Nobody believes you when you say you’re over this show. Yes, there’s still the unsettling subplot in which Felicity Huffman’s Lynette (picutred) has to deal with her husband Tom’s love child, who’s like 30 with a really annoying voice. Ew. On the other hand, the Applewhites are gone, Mike Delfino’s in a coma, and according to real life, Bree will eventually have to become pregnant. Sold! You’re in.

Brothers & Sisters is on right after DH, and it’ll probably be worth your while if only to see Calista Flockhart on TV again. She’s playing a conservative radio talk-show host. It’ll be weird.

Speaking of big comebacks, EW’s Marc Weingarten called Shawn Colvin’s new album, These Four Walls, her finest since 1996’s A Few Small Repairs. Or check out Basement Jaxx’s excellent Crazy Itch Radio — what all the cool kids have been silently bopping to this week via their iPods. (You can just tell.)

The International Federation of Film Critics awarded Pedro Almodóvar’s movie Volver  ”Best Film of the Year.” It won’t be released until Nov. 3 (watch the trailer here), but Sony Pictures Classics is rereleasing eight Almodóvar classics on DVD, including All About My Mother and Bad Education.  Do your homework!

EW’s Lisa Schwarzbaum gave a rare A to Old Joy, a film opeining today in limited release, about two guy friends camping in Oregon’s Cascade Mountains. (What, no one gets rammed by a yak or straps themselves to a rocket?)

We know, we know — Lost is not back yet. But you can watch this awesome promo for the Oct. 4 season premiere all Saturday long.

Or you could, like… go jogging.

What “Dawson’s Creek” song? If you meant “I Don’t Want to Wait,” that was by Paula Cole. Shawn Colvin’s big hit was “Sunny Came Home.”

I’ll be watching Desperate Housewives, but my love/hate relationship with Susan still exists. Since HBO really has nothing new to offer on Suday night, I’m going to remain faithful to the girls.
I saw a promo for this Sunday’s show and they are completely ripping off a plot from Sex and the City; Bree says she hasn’t had sex with her new man and that they are going to wait till marriage. Isn’t that what happend to Charolett when she waited for Tray? Hmmmm, Cherry is starting the recycling a bit early.

Thank you, anon, I was just going to say that!

I am giving Desperate Housewives 3 episodes to get me back this season, they lost me last season at episode 9. and I do not hate Susan, she was one of my favorites, but the writers really did not do right by her characters last year… as if they had something against her. I’m keeping my eye on the writing, if they don’t step it up and equalize the story lines… i will stop watching.

“with her husband Tom’s love child, who’s like 30 with a really annoying voice. Ew.”
Um that is the love-childs mother…we never got to meet the actual love child.

I’m loving the “Lost” promo. I almost believe it’s going to be the show that I fell in love with the 1st season. Now, I said “almost” as in they did screw up the 2nd season a bit (a lot) but I’m willing to come back and be all obsess with it.
    Welcome back, Lost.

thank you ed… i cant believe these idiots get paid to make huge idiot POP CULTURE mistakes like that! that was paul “shave no pits” cole

Paula Cole sang the Dawson’s Creek song.

Yeah, anon! I was thinking the same thing about the Dawson’s Creek song. I didn’t wath Dawson’s Creek, but I don’t remember Sunny Came Home ever being associated with it!

You can BELIEVE me when I say I’m over DH. I can’t get through an entire season. The first season I was done before the last five episodes and last season I only made it through that many. I’m not even gonna bother this season. I was sustained by my crushes on Teri Hatcher and Eva Longoria ..(and the two hot gardeners……and Carlos) but now that’s not enough. (Maybe I should see someone about that) And Eva is getting sort of annoying publicly.
I’m excited about the Almodovar films. The Viva Pedro series is playing in Hollywood and today I’ll be seeing Live Flesh. Bad Education and All About My Mother are my favorites so that homework is done!

not a bad season premiere of “housewives”. hopefully there will be great things to come. and i hope that laurie metcalf becomes the new “mrs. huber”. you know marc cherry would not have got laurie if he didn’t have great things in store for her. fingers crossed.

I really want to love DH again, but tonight’s season premiere was merely so-so. I can’t believe that the writers cannot come up with anything more interesting than another psycho beau for Bree, another dead-end relationship for Susan, another source of conflict for Lynette and Tom, another opportunity for Gaby to act spoiled and un-PC, and another “mysterious” body for everyone to whisper about. If it were up to me, I would immediately get rid of Tom’s “baby mama.” As the only remaining married couple on Wisteria Lane, Tom and Lynette should be portrayed as a team. I’d much rather watch them work together than have the same fight every week. Then I would give Susan some much-needed poise and grace. The clumsy bit is really old. And, I would either have Mike die or come out of the coma and marry her. Two seasons of “will they or won’t they?” is one season too many. The writers blew it when they had Gaby lose her baby. So much could have been done with her pregnancy and birth. As for Bree, I would like to see her getting involved with the community, possibly in local politics, which would allow the writers to capitalize on her fierceness and need for control.

Dang, now we have both the Shawn Colvin and Paula Cole songs stuck on endless loop in our heads. Thanks to the sharp-eyed readers who caught that error. Fixed.

I will admit that Kyle plays a pretty cool super orderly, control freak, sociopath. But I have to agree, that Bree involved in yet another crazy man, selfish Gabby, Suasan in a dead end awe shucks relationship, and chaotic Lynette dealing with a childish woman? It has to get better than the season opener.
Brothers and Sisters is Sisters meets Thirtysomething. Hello Patrica Wetig acting, and Ken Olin directing? That is a red flag if I ever saw one. It is not bad, but not original either.
