I have just scientifically proven beyond the shadow of a reasonable doubt that you can indeed get too much of a good thing. Case in point: I haven’t yet fully digested the new Scissor Sisters CD sitting on my desk — nor the Fergie disc that, like a McGriddle, is bizarre yet tasty, and also gets covered by a stack of papers any time a coworker comes into my office — and already there’s four artists streaming online who are competing for my very limited ear schedule. (BTW, ”ear schedule” is the new ”ear delicious”; do try to work it in to casual conversation.)
First up, the indispensable Beauty N the Beat has four song snippets from the one CD I’m most excited about for fall: Fantasia’s not-yet-titled sophomore release. Granted, the title ”Baby-Makin Hips” is tres alarming, but are you gonna sit there and tell me you don’t love the lyrics? Come on, ”See that wobble-wobble/Shaped just like a cola bottle” is the best ode to bootyliciousness since ”I don’t think you’re ready for this jelly.” Not only that, the beat is so hot that if it doesn’t get you up and out of your chair, then I implore you to head to the pharmacy for a bottle of Vitamin Soul. My only problem with the track is that I can’t I.D. the horn sample in the background. Help a blogger out, folks! Anyone?
Meanwhile, on the other end of the musical spectrum, Chris Cornell’snew Casino Royale theme, ”’You Know My Name,” is playing over at Breakfast at Tiffany’s blog. (Click here to listen.) Mind you, as Bond themes go, it’s no ”Goldfinger,” but on the flip side, it’s no ”The World Is Not Enough,” either. Am I right?
Finally, the latest CDs from Janet Jackson and Ludacrisare streaming respectively at BET and MTV. I’ve been trying ragefullyand unsuccessfully to get them to play for the last half-hour, butsince I’m now approaching the ”hurl-something-out-the-window” ragethreshold, I will leave it to you, technically savvy readers, to listenand to judge. Me, I’ll indulge in a little ”What’s Your Fantasy” and try again later, after my blood-pressure returns to normal.

Hey… I like “The World is not Enough”!
Now….”Tomorrow Never Dies” and ‘Thunderball”-those are some dumb songs
The new James Bond song is far worse than Garbage’s the Wolrd is not Enough. Plus come on, this song wasn’t so bad.
And as far as the post Connery Bond goes, we all know that Tina Turner’s Goldeneye is the very best song, and her last good one to boot. Right?
Well, your posts have always made me think that you have no musical taste, but this confirms it. “The World is Not Enough” is easily the best Bond track since “Goldfinger”. Shirley Manson croons better than anyone else since Shirley Bassey. Then again, since you seem to like any pop diva on TRL, I could see how Shirley might be a little much for you to handle…
Michael Slezak bashing ANYTHING related to Garbage?? Say it isn’t so!!! My love and adoration for Madame Slezak has plummetted oh-so-dramatically *oh snap*
Shut up, Fantasia. Or else I’ll have to SCHEDULE buying some EAR plugs. I mean, come on. Who could like her voice?
The best 007 themesong ever belonged to one of the worst bond movies ever made. It was Duran Duran’s #1 hit “A View to a Kill”.
Anyone else feel like the Bond movies have suffered without the source material? To me, the Connery movies (which most closely resembled the books), and the character played by Timothy Dalton (in The Living Daylights anyway) were much better than the Roger Moore and Remington Steel years.
As for Casino Royale, the movie’s going to have tough shoes to fill. Both David Niven (who ian fleming saw as the perfect actor for the role) and Woody Allen got to play James Bond in the comedic remake, and that 1950’s CBS tv show “Casino Royale” was fantastically true to the novel (even if they did make Bond American in that one).
But the real question about Casino Royale that lingers in my head is whether or not Bond will drink the Vesper Martini in this one, which was his original Bond Martini (Three parts Gin, one part grain vodka, one half part Lillet stirred and poured into a champagne glass with a twist of lemon-I got Lounge 201 in DC to make that a regular drink on their menu, thankyouverymuch).
What about Carly Simon’s “Nobody Does it Better”??? From The Spy Who Loved Me??? That’s a great song and one of the best Bond movies. IMO. :*)
I worked my way through Fergie, and I gotta say, I LOVE it! I really hope that interscope is able to make this project work, since its about as eclectic as Gwen’s “Love.Angel.Music.Baby” was two years ago. I was kinda worried for Miss Ferguson when I 1st heard “London Bridge” & was shocked to hear her faux rapping, and NOT even singing when she has such a fantastic voice!! My fave tracks are “Fergalicious” with fellow Pea, Will.i.am, “Pedestal”, “Here I Come”, “Finally” and the surprising, “All That I Got (The Make-up Song)”.
I too have had difficulty getting to go back to it since I got my copy of janet’s “20 Y.O.” on Monday, & wanted to get through it before all the critiques came ablazing. Its far better than “Damita Jo” and kind of in-between “All For You” and “janet” as my fave Miss Jackson cds. I really like the beginning of the disc, esp. the tracks “Get It Out Me” (though she ripped off Amerie), “This Body” and the slow jam, “Take Care”. “So Excited” is growing on me, but if she doesn’t get the pop audience, the album is goin to have a rocky road ahead of her.
The Scissor Sisters disc is sittin on my computer, but I’ve yet to get to it, but I do love “I DON’T FEEL LIKE DANCIN’”. Its gonna be a tough sell for pop radio, even as fun as it is, but if given a shot, it could…go…all…the…way….But then turn the Scissor Sisters into mainstream success, so…maybe it shouldn’t find that audience!
And I’m sorry. I went out and BOUGHT Fantasia’s debut cd the day it was released back in november 2004, listened to it once and was like, glad I paid $7.99 for it at Circuit City the day of its release. It was the only way I could live with myself for even purchasing it. I go no expectations for her new disc. AT ALL.
I couldn’t get the new janet stream to work on bet.com either… BUT I found it on http://www.janet-love.com and it works perfectly… The first half of the album is good. Totally Control-era stuff. Can’t wait to hear (read) what you think!!!
Phil are you a critic or something how do you have these CD’s already? Anyways, I LOVE ‘I Don’t Feel Like Dancing’ and can’t wait for Scissor Sisters! I listened to the Janet stream last night and as a longtime fan I have to say I’m VERY disappointed. Granted her CD’s do usually have to grow on me but on first listen it’s her Worst yet, (and that’s including the two pre-Control albums). I had to download “Diamonds (w/ Herb Alpert)” and her ‘87 Grammy performance from YouTube to remember why I liked her in the first place. I hope Fantasia’s album is good. I don’t have the last one, it sounded decent but I think she can do better. I listened to clips of Fergie on iTunes and liked what I heard. London Bridge (which I initially hated) is like my new favorite song!………….oh ps. I’m glad people got Slezak told about dissin’ Garbage. He should know better;-)
Dang; won’t get the chance to get my Janet on until the album drops on Tuesday. I’m hopeful that it works for her.
In other Ellipsian news, I’m lovin’ Fergie’s album! It has replaced that of Mr. Timberlake in my car (although I’ma go back soon; that album is deeper and less readily accessible than I expected. Nice, J.T.) and I have to say that I am very pleasantly surprised. I must admit that I would certainly not have purchased it without hearing it first at AOL’s Full CD Listening Party (can Slezak and I SAY enough about the weekly pre-listen? Love it!). Anyway, Fergie has gone all ambitious and versatile on me…I’m really diggin “Fergalicious”, “Glamorous”, “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and “Finally” (John Legend’s piano rules on that last track).
Micheal I think I LOVE you, will you marry me? I’m most excited about Fantasia album too!
Why the hell would anyone listen to someone named “Ep Sato?” Fantasia is amazing, and it’s very unfortunate that people have to be so immature as to bash her fans. Get over yourself. Fantasia’s new CD is going to be SMOKIN’. Baby Makin’ Hips sounds amazing…Hood Boy, I Nominate You, and When I See You all sound great too.
Oops, meant to say, “why the hell would anyone listen to someone named ROSIE?” sorry ep sato, read the posts wrong
After listening to “Baby-Making Hips” all my ear wax fell out. Drag Queens everywhere are going to get a lot of mileage from that one. You go, Fantasia. Three snaps Up!!!
i like the 007 song. different for a Bond theme, and i’m liking that idea. i LOVE ‘tasia, so i won’t comment, everything will be biased. the janet songs aren’t half bad either. patiently waiting for the scissor sisters
Slezak, I am mad at you and Fantasia for that Baby Makin Hips song! Hours later it is still stuck in my head! I guess the good news is that I enjoy the song. I think she has a potential hit on her hands.
I’m loving Fantasia and her new tracks right now, can’t wait to hear the entire songs. I believe she got a hit on her hands with “BABY MAKIN HIPS”(lol) its just so darn catchy..and “NOMINATE YOU” sexy as hell
Baby Makin Hips has the potential to be my song of the year, and Slezak is right on with “shaped just like a cola bottle” being simply awesome. I’ve never been a big Fantasia fan but this song is brilliant.
oh, and Garbage hasn’t been good for about 6 years now so trash on Slezak, trash on.
Fantasia reminds me of Patti Labelle, only not as good. She needs a bra.
OMG–The Janet Jackson Album is So Good! I am indeed surprised!…Who Would’ve Thought?..lol..Seriously guys, check it out, it is streaming over at http://www.bet.com
Someone should get honest with Janet Jackson. She needs to stop taking her top off and show some real talent. She is mediocre at best. I bet plenty of her CDS end up in the “for sale/used” section. If it were not for her crazy brother, she would not have gained the “fame she now enjoys.
Janet’s cd is hot! Why was call on me the first single? Everything else is way better than that song. I wasn’t expecting the cd to actually be good.
Janet’s album is AMAZING. Wow, much better than the last. Very fun, light and dancy. The tunes are excellently produced. I dont understand how or why people hate on her…shes sucha hard worker, a great performer….i mean, how can u say she got success from her brother…i mean, 20 f’ing years?!
i’ve heard all four tracks and love them all. my favorite is hood boy w/big boi.the girl is awesome and i’m waiting for the cd to be released.
007 theme better than the last few… Fantasia sounds great… Janet going to back to her ‘Control’ roots is cool…
I finally gave the Chris Cornell 007 theme a spin this morning, & its okay. Not completely sold on it yet, but still got a bit of time til the movie opens…
I’m afraid to listen to this Fantasia song after y’all are raving bout it, but I will point out, the reference “shaped just like a cola bottle” is far from new & has been immortalized by FatMan Scoop on a remix of Sasha’s 2003 reggae hit, “DAT SEXY BODY”, appropriately titled “COCA COLA SHAPE” and anyone thats been to a hip-hip club in the past few years has heard it. Sorry for all y’all thinking Fantasia was creative……
Favorite Bond theme? Goldfinger by Shirley Bassey…of course!
I just LOVE Fantasia’s new songs and “Baby Makin Hips” is just great. She’s really having fun and she is singing her butt off. You can’t help but get up an jam to these feel good songs. She most certainly stepped it up for her Sophomore album and I was already pleased with her four time grammy nominated “free yourself” but this disk is going to be so much better.
Janet’s CD is suprisingly hot. I streamed it over at bet.com and I will definitely be picking it up on tuesday. This new album is much better than “All For You” & “Damita Jo” combined!
