I loved it when cartman from Southpark covered “heat of the moment”. It was pretty darned cool.
And props to Stephanie for bringing up the band Rush. That jam “Tom Sawyer” totally rules! What is more, their bass infused stylings led the way for folks like Primus a decade later.
Unfortunately, experimental bands are rarely appreciated in their time. Hendrix wasn’t the rock god he is now while he was alive, and I’ve got this slow sinking feeling that college students will be talking about how brillian the Brian Jonestown Massacre “was” sometime about ten years from now.

Pretty much there is a major lack of talent out there. Justin Timberlake, Christina A, John Mayer, etc… There is a bunch of all cookie cutter sounding, pretty people. They may sing well but all of there stuff sounds the same and has no soul.
This is probably why people are looking to seasoned singers, writers and musicians.
FYI – Lionel Ritchie is a very succesful song writer. Bob Dylan is a legend. Asia was short lived but huge. They put Geffen on the map. Without Geffen who knows who would have pushed Aerosmith’s reunion or if Guns N’ Roses would have been discovered.
Ask yourself this, name all of the music John Mayer, Justin Timberlake and Christina A will be remembered for? They won’t. It is cookie cutter.

Only checked out the Hot 100 on BB…….Seger, YES! Lionel, YES!
But where, oh where, is the nauseatingly ubiquitous Clayboy whose fanatics promised – nay, THREATENED – to make his “new” cd Number One with a bullet????????? Could it be they haven’t gotten their allowances yet?

Asia has 4 VERY talented musicians.
Unlike most of todays music, Asia writes their own lyrics and music.
Asia had those hits that were charted but
some of the best songs were never or rarely
    played on air.
Also, Icon, which is John Wetton and Geoff Downes
    from Asia is spectacular.
I bought it from msn music and still play the CD weekly.
Never pass up John Wettons last solo CD, Rock of Faith, spectacular.
If Asia wasn’t talented they wouldn’t be touring 24 years after their first album and they sound as good now as they did then. John Wetton can sing better than 95% of anyone on the radio. His bass playing is legendary and is rarely matched. Same with Carl Palmers drum playing, Steve Howe the master guitarist, whom many younger guitarist try to imitate (think of the opening guitar from Roundabout by Yes) and last but not least the keyboard master, Geoffrey Downes, giving Asia the distinct sound and an excellent writer and producer and an extremely nice guy, always there for his fans.
I cannot say enought about them.

    EP:
Good call: Geddy Lees bass riffs influenced Primus!
    You are cool.

John Mayer, Justin Timberlake and Christina A will be going the way of Leaf Garrett and David Cassidy.
Those songs you mentioned will go the same way, 10 years from now.
Don’t confuse pop hits for quality, musicianship and song writing ability. That is why the old vets are showing up on the billboard charts. Talent always comes to the surface where bubble gum stars eventually fade away.

So when did Timberfake’s cd come out and why is he at number one already?

Lionel riding Nicole’s coat tails! That’s truly the joke of the day. I know Lionel must have had a good laugh. Those of us that have been listening to him for over 30 years sure will too. I wish the media would get more “seasoned” music critics to comment on our more “seasoned” performers. You younger people just don’t have the credibility it takes to give a review that “grown folks” can take serious. Jermaine Dupri is an exception. He stated that seasoned performers should strive to sound better, not younger. Now that young man is smart and has talent! I’m sure he learned some things from Lionel as well.

Who hired this music ‘reviewer’? Maybe he should try listening to music instead of looking at fashion magazines and watching episodes of Entertainment Tonight. Has he ever listened to Richie play live and sing? Obvioulsy not. Maybe it’s time for this reviewer to consider his real calling instead of insulting artists.
