Eddie hearts Scary

Categories: Celebrity Couples

145620__murphy_scary_lWhat is it that creeps me out about the coupling of Eddie Murphy and Scary Spice, as chronicled in extensive detail in this new People article? Actually, what is it that doesn’t creep me out about it? I guess the most obvious thing is that it throws a monkey wrench in the Eddie Murphy comeback narrative that’s been developing over the last few months, thanks to good buzz about his serious performance in Dreamgirls. Here he is, about to get his actorly and even his musical credibility restored, and he goes and takes up with a manufactured pop footnote who refuses to stay in 1997 where she belongs. Now she gets to be the gal who landed Eddie Murphy, but he’s stuck being the guy dating a Spice Girl. That’s just not right.

Not good for his career, but when you’re in love… you’re in love. Even though I hope they don’t procreate, good luck to them.

Hey, don’t knock Scary! If you’re going to go after a Spice, that’s the one to go after.

  • CC

…although, that the scariest Scary Spice picture I’ve ever seen. Maybe I’M stuck in 1997.

  • professor74

Hey it didn’t turn out too bad for Beckham, right?

  • Lynny

Don’t be a hater- Love is a good thing even if it is with a has been. Good Luck, Eddie.

  • Ed

    Whaaah?!
I’m glad that Eddie Murphy is FINALLY on his way back. He paid his dues with all those childrens movies he acted in. Now’s the time for him to do some serious acting.

  • zigra

When did Eddie Murphy have music credibility? That being said, his comic brilliance (ok erratic, but brilliant) has spanned 3 decades, and I too wish the happy couple well.

  • Howard

Zigra, you didn’t think he had musical cred when he did “Party All the Time”? What, do you have standards or something?
Personally, I think he had more musical credibility when he did “Boogie in your Butt” on his first album, but that’s just me.

  • Vicki

Seriously, she was the only one who could halfway carry a tune. Don’t knock the pop!

Is this just a slow news day because I don’t see what the big deal is? If they’re happy together, then good for them. I seriously doubt it will have an impact on his “comeback”. I mean, is anyone really going to say, “Hey did you see Eddie Murphy in Dreamgirls. He was brilliant. Too bad he’s dating a Spice Girl?” Oh wait…

  • Phil

I actually heard about this on Wendy Williams breifly the other day, and I thought she was just referencing someone as Scary Spice, NEVER actually assuming it was THE Spice girl! So question I got is this…Did Scary break-up Eddie’s marriage, or did they meet after he filed for divorce? Cause I heard Scary moved to L.A. last year to work on her acting career, was that just some flap to cover up the then blossoming scandal???

  • Mike in Moncton

Susman, you’re a mean spirited idiot.

  • Cassie

Scary Spice is amazing! She was the best part about The Spice Girls. Why all the bitterness?

  • JKS

WTF? Who cares that they’re dating? Put yer claws back!

  • Alicia

Susman, you couldn’t choose a better picture of Scary Spice than that? She looked a thousand times better in the picture on the People website, and that picture was fuzzy.
Having said that, if they’re happy then good for them.

  • Reina

Hey if they are happy, good for them. Gotta live and let live. I also think that Eddie’s marriage has been shaky lately.
Alicia, certainly agree with you about the picture that was used. Scary looks like she was posing for Halloween masks.

  • Todd

I thought that was a pic of Wanda Sykes

  • ericalina

reina, by “shaky lately,” i presume you mean, “divorced”! they have been done since this spring. imdb has them divorced since april.
but actually, who cares who eddie murphy is dating? to me, they are both kinda washed up, but i certainly don’t think any less of him for dating a spice girl. whatevs!

  • bootsycolumbia

Gary, this isn’t news. Who cares who Eddie is dating? He’s still a talented guy and I’m still looking forward to seeing him in Dreamgirls.

  • Jasper

I hate to get ‘political’ and bring up decade-old debates but I ALWAYS hated that the black one had to be Scary Spice. There I said it. That’s a horrible picture of her but I thought that she and Posh were the prettiest (if not the only pretty ones). Just like Lark Voorhies was the hottest one on Saved By The Bell (I know even older debate!) but she got stuck with Screech as her lapdog. Jesse and Kelly were hot too though………what was I talking about?

  • Jasper

Oh so on the actual subject: I think that Eddie will probably be the best thing in Dreamgirls which so far looks underwhelming. I don’t think Scary will cause any harm to his image or anything. I mean at least she’s not a transvestite hooker, (not that there’s anything wrong with being a good samaritan). Oh and Phil please stop listening to Wendy Williams for ANY reason. And ‘Hot Guys Dating Fug Girls is the New Black’ I love your name=)

  • brandonk

Eddie Murphy’s no catch, so they seem perfect for each other.

  • Jill

Grow up, Gary Susman. Melanie Brown has moved on from the Spice Girls (over 10 years ago). Is that your major point about why Eddie should not date her? I think you’re more creepy than Scary Spice.

  • Lucinda

    Gary, dude, that was harsh.

  • DDH

If David Beckham can marry a spice girl, why can’t Eddie date one? You balk now, but I am sure that back in 1997 they were on the cover of EW and you were raving about them.

  • Chele Belle

To paraphrase Lucinda: Gary, dude, that was harsh.
Ya know he ain’t all that. AND she’s not some total wash out. She had her share of success and so has he.
Geesh thank God Eddie ain’t a white fella or she’d be driven out of the country.

  • Adee

What I find interesting is that both Eddie’s ex-wife Nicole and his current lady, Melanie are bi-racial and that their mothers are English.

  • Jesse

I have to agree with the above posters, Susman – stop bashing Mel B., aka Scary Spice! Love em’ or hate em’, you have to give the Spice Girls credit for the amount of #1 hit singles they were able to accomplish in the late 90’s. In the span of a few short years, they were *THE* pop sensation. And – laugh at me all you want, but I happen to think they were quite talented. I’m still hoping for a reunion someday!
Regardless of how you feel about them as a group – what did Mel B. ever do to you? What makes Eddie Murphy such a catch and makes Mel B. so unworthy of him? Pull your claws out! Slezak should have been given this article, you know he would be giving Mel B. some Spicy lovin’! :-)
