TV Breakups: Thanks for doing our work!

102225__gilmore_lHave I told you lately that I love you, PopWatchers? Or at least given a shout-out to your wildly entertaining message-board comments? If not, then I’ve been remiss, but only because I’m spending all my free time working on the script for PopWatch Comments: The Movie. Still, until that sweet day arrives when we see our best work brought to life by Wentworth Miller, Ally Walker, and Catherine Keener  — this blog has sexy cheekbones, fabulous hair, and undeniable wit, natch — we’ll have to settle for PopWatch Comments: The Photo Gallery.

To be more specific (and coherent), last week, when I bid bitter farewell to CSI: Miami, I posed the question: "What series are you breaking up with this fall?" Your responses were so inspired, we picked our 10 favorites — like Jen’s complaint that she wanted to punch Gilmore Girls‘ transformed Luke (pictured, with Lorelai) in the throat — and gave the feature the center square on the EW.com home page today. So keep up the great work*, and click here to see who made the cut.

*um, within reason, of course — let’s not clever me right out of a job, OK?

Woot woot! I’m so proud of myself. I knew the countless hours I spent on PopWatch at work would pay off some day. Now, how can I start getting paid for this?

  • california

Why did you guys put up a picture of Law and Order when the number of people tossing CSI out the window was far greater?

  • Ellipsian

Awwww…PopWatch likes me! You really, really do! Like fellow loyal reader/work-dodger Gretchen Weiners, I am tickled that my time here has been recognized by my idols-in-wit. Wait…no, actually it’s less of a “tickling” than it is a slight “burning sensation”, but no matter. I love y’all regardless!
Oh, and thanks, too, for reprinting this instead of my embarrassingly gushing and blatantly swooning fan letter to a certain PopWatch writer I sent in April (the one that most certainly did not say, “Michael Slezak, methinks I love you!” in the subject line. Oi.).
Until later! I’m off and back to daydreaming in (Not TOO)Clever-Clever Land…

Kudos (did I actually just say that?) to EW for recognizing the talent and wit your PopWatchers posess. The comments on this blog are infinitely more entertaining and intelligent than those found on other other blogs (yes, I cheat). The break-up letters should be printed in an upcoming issue. They are THAT good.

Michael, that was probably my favorite Pop Watch item ever! I loved reading them and loved writing one myself. Fun AND therapeutic all in one!!

  • thwarted

Yeah, that was way fun. Yay!

Breaking up with CSI is awesome. Check out this link to a possible CSI pilot. CSI Bismarck, just amazing.

I loved the letter that pretended not to care about Buffy anymore and then begged her to come back. That was classic and I felt the same way.

  • pfitz

I loved how many PopWatch readers were inspired to follow Slezak’s format in kissing off their tired favorites in TVland.
But I gotta say that you chose a lot of really lame responses, leaving out the real gems. Maybe it was to obtain a greater breadth of rejects, but I was disappointed with most of the responses, and I know I read better ones last week.
But kudos and kisses to you anyway for sharing!

hmm, I am sad my haughty and pretentious, “I have impeccable taste so I need not break up with anything” didn’t make the list.
but then again, why the hell would it?
I really wish I could have thought of a show to dump! I would have brought my A Game!

  • Jen

Can I tell you that seeing my Gilmore Girls letter online today was the absolute highlight of my week? Thanks for inspiring me, Slezak!

  • Lorenzo

Woooooooooo! Oh my GOD! I can’t believe I made the list. I just wanna thank Michael Slezak for the opportunity for every popwatcher to make their own breakup letters to their lover (TV show). I like to thank Gillian Flynn for reviewing shows to make sure that I don’t watch the crappy ones. I also wanna thank Alynda Wheat personally for just being a human DVR and telling me what to watch for the next 7 days. And lastly, I wanna thank myself because I have a huge ego and I’m only 18!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! :)

  • Todd

I would like to rebuttle the Gilmore Girls break-up. The writer is mad that Amy Sherman-Palladino is not coming back but did that stop the writer in blaming Sherman-Palladino for the bad scrips last year? Amy was the one who wrote in Luke’s kid, and the wimply Loreli and the whiny Rory as well as most of the season herself. Someone might want to do their research, it is best to not accuse someone of cheating when they didn’t do it, they’ll just be mad at you when you come crawling back.

  • Jen

Todd, man, relax…it’s not that deep! Breathe…

  • cabri

I am so disappointed in you, PopWatch. The best Dear John by far was poshcat’s kiss-off to Buffy. So what if Buffy isn’t even on broadcast TV anymore? So what if poshcat was too needy to ever let go? I kept turning the page, expecting the #1 to be her paean to the smart, funny, adventurous narcotic that feeds our Whedon-loving souls, but no, you go with quantity, not quality! Tsk, tsk, PopWatch! Re-check your priorities!

  • Colorado

I was stunned to see the complaints posted against GG. Stunned because she had obviuously been reading my mind. With 100% accuracy !
However, as noted earlier, the blame for last season’s scripts does fall with Amy.
I’ve already vowed to stop watching (if for no other reason then the “getting back with Chris” thing.
