As my colleague Gary Susman pointed out earlier this week, "Nobody puts Ben Affleck in the corner!" Well, actually, what he really said was that the media borg seems to be giving the Good Will Hunting scribe a second chance at stardom, or decent press anyhow. And judging from this morning’s decent-to-good reviews of his new noir biopic, Hollywoodland, it seems that Gary is correct. Now if Affleck could just destroy the evidence of an unspeakably heinous interview segment/grope session with Montreal TV host Anne-Marie Losique (run, don’t walk, to Defamer to check out the video… seriously) maybe a second go-round with Oscar could be in his future.
Anyhow, check out all the nice things critics are saying about Jennifer Garner’s husband, and once you’ve seen the movie, let us know if you agree.
James Verniere, Boston Herald: "Affleck, who looks as if he was born to wear black tie, even at this hefty weight, brings a bittersweet intelligence to the cynical and hard-drinking Reeves, who knows he is just another second-rater."
Mary F. Pols, Contra-Costa Times: "Hollywoodland may not live up to its ambitions, but thanks in no small part to a subdued and poignant performance by Affleck, it does achieve something significant by memorializing the actor and his lost dreams."
Shawn Levy, The Oregonian: "The other, better half of the picture deals with the life and career of Reeves, who’s played with confidence, vulnerability and humor by, of all people, Ben Affleck."
Chris Kaltenbach, Baltimore Sun: "The scenes featuring Reeves, played with just the right mix of professionalism and exasperation by Ben Affleck, are the best things about Hollywoodland and suggest how much better the film would have been without the distraction of a fictional private eye."
Jack Garner, Gannett News Service: "As played quite wonderfully by Ben Affleck, Reeves is a frustrated, teeth-clenched and ultimately doomed fellow who believes he deserves more out of life than a cape."
Duane Dudek, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: "Affleck’s lumbering and world-weary performance as Reeves, whose dark personality was the opposite of his family-friendly public image, has the awkward fit of a working actor who, like the man he is playing, has a superhero character (Daredevil) in his résumé and is having trouble finding suitable roles. All of which helps make Hollywoodland Affleck’s most authentic work in years."
Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times: "After a series of horrendous flops…Affleck reminds us why he became a star in the first place, with a smooth but sympathetic portrayal of an actor whose ‘greatest’ moments came while wearing a glorified Halloween costume."
Susan Walker, Toronto Star: "Somehow Ben Affleck is perfect as director Allen Coulter’s Reeves: a mediocre actor ambitious for big dramatic roles, with a weakness for women who wanted to look after him."

There are no words….Just, I mean…wow
Count me among those who feels that Ben Affleck has found no redemption since Jersey Girl. At least Kevin Smith made Clerks II. On the other hand, starring in a conspiracy theory laden flick about a dude who killed himself after claiming that no one gives your attention starved azz unless there’s a scandal involved? Come on! Wait, I know who really killed the original Superman, it was Courtney Love! Case closed.
Good grief… That interview was indeed unspeakable heinous. I mean… my gosh… I am stunned.
oh, I think the interview makes him a more charming personality than ever before. He’s is having fun, and god, wouldn’t we all have fun if life threw us those opportunities. I applaud him,and hope he gets a worthy oscar campaign for his work in Hollywoodland — it is a gorgeous performance.
lol! EP.
I do sense the irony in this film, but you know what? After Surviving Christmas, Ben needs the dramatic exposure. Kudos to him!
OK, promoting “Jersey Girl”. Wasn’t that pre-rehab? Give the guy a break. Can’t wait to see “Hollywoodland”
That clip was probably some of Ben Affleck’s best acting to date.
Ben Affleck is a no talent piece of Hollywood backlash.
The clip of him interviewing during Jersey Girl just goes to show that he rode Matt Damon’s coattails all the way to the bank, the Oscars, and the A-List. Too bad he is on the Z-List now… with even his daughter with J.Garner having more talent in her umbilical cord than he does in his whole pudgy, mumbling, egotistical self.
Has anyone noticed that the theme (I’d say subtext, but I don’t think it’s that buried) of the reviews is that Ben Affleck is the George Reeves of the 21st century? I’m sure that if his role in this movie comes up in conversation at Oscar time (wow, it was weird to write that), someone will flat out say he was playing himself, based on what I’ve seen about this movie so far.
Dude, Captain Granville from Voyage of The Mimi is deeply saddened by that.
Bad form, C.T. Bad form.
I think Ben Affleck has a lot of genuine talent in him. I don’t think he has had good vehicles to showcase that. Unfortunetly, there are a LOT of bad movies scripts out there.
I think his talent has not been tapped yet, and hopefully this movie will lead to better offers.
I have to admit I have not seen the movie – only the every-2-seconds trailer on TV – but, although the role is certainly much meatier (pardon the pun) than he has perhaps ever had, Affleck always looks to me like he’s acting. He always seems to have one eye on the mirror; there is, for me, an uncomfortable self-consciousness in him that, for me, gets in the way of his really getting inside a role. I’m amazed he’s getting all this praise.
Ok, I have just watched the above-referenced video. Beyond words and much worse than the outrageous interview he did for “Surviving Christmas” on one of the “Access Hollywood” or “Extra” shows, where he announced the whole interview would be blipped due to his language and it was! He also appeared to try to grab some female reporter’s ass on the red carpet. I hadn’t known about his bad rep before that – was out of the loop on him. Some adolescents in show biz must think this stuff is cool because it does get on the air, after all. But for me it only enhances the “What is Jennifer Garner thinking?” that was going around internet threads when she first started dating him. Personally, as a FORMER fan of JG who has been sadly disillusioned, I do not see his hooking up with the “TV princess” or whatever the phrase was as upping his stock but as seriously lowering hers. The fact that Jennifer Garner hooked up with this guy (along with everything she subsequently did to the show that made her a star) shows me that she is not the woman I thought she was.
It’s funny that this clip is new to most people as we in Montreal have had the good fortune to see a few of those clips over the years. They seems to have had a flirty relationship that grew a lot but they never talked about the movies at all in these interviews. I haven’t seen any since he got married.
What I find funny is this people are hearing about this now because as Nat said, this is old news for Montrealers. This has been going on in every interview since Armageddon. And each time I have to watch for the sheer hilarity of it all. I am interested to see what will happen when the show finally airs the Hollywoodland interview.
