Trailer Blazer: 'Dreamgirls'

10101__dream_lOkay, seriously, I promise I’m going to try not to write about Dreamgirls every other day between now and its Dec. 21 release, but I could not resist the opportunity to discuss the latest trailer — er, exclusive montage…whatever you want to call it. (Click here to check on it.) What’s interesting to me is the way it gives a glimpse of director Bill Condon’s luscious photography, a taste of Sharen Davis’ saucy costumes, and even a snippet of Beyonce belting "One Night Only," and yet, leaves us wondering about the most important question of all: How’s the acting? I’m optimistic (or at least really, really hopeful) it’s gonna be great; how ’bout you, PopWatchers?

This is the first movie in a long time that I’ve really wanted to see badly. I cannot wait until December!
I think the acting will be okay. Beyonce, Jamie, the whole ensemble, ought to be good. Hope I get to see an advance show here in Dallas.

Man alive I can’t wait!!! I think I listen to the Dreamgirls in Concert cd about five times a week.

I want to be excited about Dreamgirls. I’d love for a black musical to be an Oscar contender and everything but from veiwing the trailers I’m much more impressed with Idlewild. Though it’s a fantasticalmish mash of swing/hip-hop the look of it feels more ‘authentic’. When I watch the DG trailer it looks like a bunch of actors playing dress up for a Beyonce video. They may’ve fared better with a Sparkle remake that was in the works with Aaliyah before she passed. I thought that Beyonce’s vocal range was more on par with that of Irene Cara. The fact that there’s no ‘acting’ in the trailer is another red flag. I haven’t seen either film so I’m hoping they’re both great but that’s just my snap judgement. And btw I’m glad to see Danny Glover again!!

Everyone I know is excited to see this movie for two reasones: Jennifer Hudson and Jennifer Hudson.

Looks like a great show. However, I have a word for you about another diva, Mr. Slezak. In your podcast about Fantasia singing “I Believe”, you said she was from “Green Point, North Carolina”. Check your facts, please! She is from HIGH Point, which is near GREENsboro. We may be far from the limelight, but I do believe you can Google us nonetheless. I’m a fan of your work, so I just thought I’d “point” out your blooper, no pun intended.

  • Tanya

I definitely can’t wait to see this!

  • Connie

My friend who works for DreamWorks previewed about 10 minutes for me the other day. It’s GOOD. Like really good. Also Eddie Murphy can actually sing and sing WELL.

  • GP

That was not new, that trailer made its debut during the 2006 BET Awards telecast… guess you were not watching (i guess black entertainment doesn’t qualify as watchable pop?)

  • Miles

I got goosepumps, or is that goosepomps… i got something in the goose department… anyway, those who say they’re only waiting for Beyonce or Jennifer Hudson, clearly did not see the Tony Award winning Aneeka Noni Rose, who is gorgeous and talented. oh, and Eddie Murphy, can we get that envelope now please… he has Best Supporting Actor nomination (AT LAST) written all over him.
DECEMBER IS NOT HERE SOON ENOUGH.

  • Just sayin….

It looks entertaining to me. I wish there had been a little acting though.
BTW Miles: I’ve heard of goose-bumps and goose-pimples, but goosepumps sound interesting – maybe even a little dirty! :)

  • Chris Richards

It has been in development forever, but I think it’s gonna tank. Like Town and Country, these are almost never worth the wait.

  • Will Holston

I think it looks great…and it would have to had cost a hell of a lot more in order to tank as much as Town and Country

  • go

    It’s going down in December.
We’re bringing Dreamgirls back, and all the haters don’t know how to act!
Oh yeah! Jennifer Hudson will be the show stopper!

  • mexipino

i am so juiced for this. but i want to know why J Hud is not a headiner…hmm? she is in the lead role. or did they make it smaller to make the movie a vehicle for Beyonce? hmm? i’m gonna be pissed if they make Effie (J Hud’s character) the back story.

  • Zachary

I want to be excited about Dreamgirls. I’m just worried they’re making it into “The Beyonce Project” I hate that it’s all about her cause the movie is about Effie played by Jennifer Hudson who barely gets mentioned. Beyonce is so overhyped already, her new album sucks, just like the last one. She just tries too hard. She gets by having 3 good songs on an album and releases them and the rest is filler. Need I mention the song “sings”. Also has anyone heard “Listen” from Dreamgirls. It sounds more like a beyonce song, not a song from the Dreamgirls era. Oh well I hope it’s good. I’m also not too big on beyonce’s acting, must we remember fighting temptations? And she’s played a singer in every film she’s done. Even Goldmember she was a lounge singer. And note to Beyonce, don’t try to copy Janet’s Rhythm Nation at the VMA’s again. First of all never try to out dance Janet when you can’t really dance. Also have you seen the end of the baby boy video where you try to do that summer sault? And did you watch yourself on the RMA awards when you did that very same routine and couldn’t really do the summersault. YOU”RE EMBARASSING!!!

  • Tinah

I’m actually lookin forward to seeing this. I don’t think Beyonce is gonna be the standout performance though, so they need to quit hyping her part up. I love throw back flicks. From the “5 Heartbeats” to “Ray”, movies about certain eras are irresistible! I’m sure the acting will be commendable as I’ve heard nothin but good things so far.

  • todd

Is it just me or…It looks like GLITTER!

  • bootsycolumbia

I’m a massive musicals fan, so you better believe I’m gonna go see Dreamgirls. Who’ll give the standout performance? My money is on Eddie Murphy. I read that he’s looking at a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination, and I believe it. I also think J Hud is going to knock a lot of socks off. And who cares if it’s hyped as a Beyonce vehicle? If the other actors are better than she is, the audience will notice, and that’s really all that counts.

  • Fatima

are you serious GP? because michael missed out on an early trailer for the film he suddenly thinks that all black entertainment is inferior and not worth mentioning?
Anyone who reads his posts would tell you that is not the case. It’s new on the apple site so its worth mentioning.
I can not wait for this movie! Am I the only one that is equally excited for J Hud and B? you don’t have to pick a side people!

  • Telly B

Guys, I am actually glad Jennifer Hudson is barely even mentioned in the trailers.
    Why?
While Beyonce gets all the hype and pre-release attention, I guarantee you it will be Hudson’s performance who will hit mainstream audiences like a ton of bricks.
The play has always been all about Effie…her story arc is just too powerful to deny and moviegoers who have never seen the musical and expect The Beyonce Show will never know what hit them…Just you wait…Hudson isn’t Jennifer Holliday, but I bet she will do justice to the famous song and, just like what happened to Holliday and the play, audiences will fall in love with Effie all over again, for the first time.
    Oh, and Eddie Murphy?
Let’s just say that the Oscar committe will be blown away by what he does in this film, and they will atone for not giving him an Oscar for The Nutty Professor.

  • Tinah

And Mr. Slezak, since you are so obviously smitten with the Bootylicious One, how’d you like her Janet rip-off performance at the VMAs? She shamelessly copied Britney Spears’ AMA performance! The way she swung down in the long coat, the leather undershorts, the black thigh-high boots, the way she got raised up on a platform at the end-all Britney! All Britney! Don’t you forget it! Search the Britney video archives if you didn’t see that performance…

  • Jason

Most of Beyonce’s wigs looked so fake!
I wish we could have at least heard Jennifer speak a line or something.

  • Kelly

As a musical theater junkie and performer, I was thrilled when I heard that Dreamgirls was finally being made into a movie. Then I (as well as all my other theater junkie friends) gasped in HORROR when we learned Beyonce was casts for this awesome role. I believe she has neither the acting chops nor vocal subtlety to pull off this part. Watch Beyonce’s past acting roles and you can plainly see that she CANNOT act. And she more screams than sings on her albums. And her diction (both talking and singing) is horrible. I’m hoping the other cast members (particularly Jennifer Hudson and Eddie Murphy) make up for what Beyonce is going to surely lack. I’m hoping the movie does the stage show justice because it’s special to a lot of people.

  • Lorell

That isn’t the trailer. That was a commercial. The trailer won’t be out until October.

STEVE IRWIN CROCODILE HUNTER JUST DIED!
freak accident in Queensland when a stingray bark hit his chest!

  • Jasper

Being from Chicago I’m rooting for Jennifer Hudson. I didn’t watch AI when she was on there but I saw clips of her performing and I think she’s talented. However this is a film which requires ACTING and it seems people are really quick to get behind someone who has never acted before. I’ve never been impressed with Beyonce’s acting but having experience and being in a role that so resembles her life may work in her favor. I’d love to see Eddie Murphy finally recognized for his talent. He’s been in a lot of dreck recently so I’d be happy to see his talent shine again! I hope he brings it. To be honest I think he’s the only one who’ll be recognized for any major awards. But I’d love to be pleasantly surprised when I see the film.

  • Joe C

I have my doubts about Beyonce, but Jennifer Hudson should have won AI, so here’s hoping she gets the strdom from this movie that she deserves

  • Nicole R

I think that Dreamgirls will probably turn out to be a great movie. As far as Beyonce, I think all of you should just quit finding reasons not to like her. Dreamgirls would not even remotely peak your interest if Beyonce’s name was not a headliner. Everybody deserves a chance to prove who they are and who are we to determine what is good or bad acting or good or bad singing unless you can carry a tune or read a script yourself. As far as I am concerned let Beyonce and the rest of the actors do their job and find somone other way to spend your time in life. Trying to degrade someone else only makes you seem like you have no self-esteem at all. No one and I mean no one is perfect!
