Trailer Blazer: Helen Mirren is hot!

152055__queen_lAs my colleague Gary Susman says, "We’ve fallen ass over tit for Helen Mirren!" And not just because she livened up Sunday night’s Emmy telecast by using that exact same expression while accepting her award for best actress in a TV movie or miniseries (for HBO’s Elizabeth I). Indeed, the saucy Brit is going the regal route again in a new fall release, and she’s also heating up the Men’s Vogue Web site as part of a saucy trailer for a movie that doesn’t exist.

- The Queen (Sept. 30) I’ve got to be honest: I wasn’t entirely sure how much I wanted to see a behind-the-scenes docudrama about the royal family’s response to the death of Princess Diana, but Mirren’s so effective in these scenes that for a few minutes, I felt like a fly on the Buckingham Palace walls. Looks like Stephen Frears (High Fidelity, Dirty Pretty Things) made the right casting call.

- Trailer for a Remake of Gore Vidal’s Caligula: Okay, so get this. Italian artist Francesco Vezzoli decided to produce a trailer — and only a trailer — for a remake of Gore Vidal and Bob Guccione’s controversial 1979 film Caligula. It showed at the Whitney Biennial, but now Men’s Vogue has a slideshow depicting images from Vezzoli’s project; according to an accompanying story in the magazine, Courtney Love herself signed for the title role (Caligula, not Gore Vidal) the second she heard Mirren was attached, adding, "With Helen Mirren, I would even do a remake of Showgirls." Respeck that!

Who else could have played Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Elizabeth II in the same calendar year? Wouldn’t it be interesting if she receives an Oscar for playing II after her Emmy win for playing I?

Helen Mirren is a goddess. From “The Long Good Friday” to “Calendar Girls” she makes everything she does riveting, even that otherwise piece-of-schlock she made with Cuba Gooding Jr. this year. And if you want to see a consummate embodiment of a richly textured, multifaceted and deeply human character, just watch her as Jane Tennison in one episode of the great “Prime Suspect”. It’ll become like crack, I promise!

I have always been a fan of Helen Mirren the actress and the woman, ever since I first caught her in Prime Suspect. She is the perfect mix of beauty, wit and intelligence, she’s up there for me with Cate Blanchet. What can I say, they are playing queens for a reason, they outshine the commoners.

Helen Mirren is fantastic! I first saw her years ago when she played Morgan Le Fey in Excalibur. Absolutely brilliant. I’ve tried to see everything she’s done since. She rocks!
