Settle down, Beyoncé's dad

Dear Matthew Knowles,

I just went to Stereogum and read your rambling, badly written press release complaining about how the media is giving too much attention to Beyoncé haters spreading rumors on the Internet, and I have one word for you: Shhhhhhhhh.

No, seriously. Shhhhhhhhh.

Let Sasha’s fierce new song and video for "Ring the Alarm" do the talking. (That ponytail is worth 1,000 words alone.) You go crunch some numbers, or have lunch with Solange, or check in on how Michelle’s doing at her choreography lessons, okay? And remember those sage words from "Survivor": "You know I’m not gonna dis you on the Internet/’Cause my mama taught me better than that."

Michael Slezak

I am not into Beyonce, but other than spelling Latoya wrong, what is so awful about what he said? He is just a dad defending his daughter. Millions of others would do the same.

“Ring the Alarm” video…. VERY CHEESY!

  • Mario

I saw the video in question, sucks… I saw Deja Vu, sucks.. I will not be buying this album.
On a side note, why is it that everyone who listens to RnB/Hip-Hop always think they’re right and often tell you you’re wrong if you don’t like certain songs?
Seriously, so I am not black and I don’t listen to RnB, Hip-Hop, Rap only.. I listen to EVERYTHING. I don’t like the songs or the videos, that’s my opinion.. how can an opinion be wrong? What?? Are they inside my head and know something I don’t know? I know I don’t like the songs. A person’s gem is another’s trash and vice versa.

    It could have been worse.
Did you like the shout-out to EW though Michael? I’m pretty sure you were the “weekly” who gave Independent Woman a D-.
    I can’t wait for September 5th!

The video matches the song, that’s all I can say for it…
As for those acting lessons B took for “Dreamgirls,” they look to be paying off. I’ve never seen anyone emote more in a music video…

Um, Just Me, he didn’t spell LeToya wrong. You did. “La Toya” is Michael’s sister.
I don’t think Mr. Knowles said anything wrong. I just don’t know why he felt the need to say anything. It’s not going to help and may even make things worse.
Mario, it’s not that everyone who listens to R&B and/or Hip Hop thinks that people who don’t like certain songs are wrong, it’s that those people will often decide that a song or its singer sucks or (my favorite) is overrated simply because they don’t like it. For example, I don’t know how many times I’ve heard someone say that Beyonce can’t sing just because that person doesn’t like her music. The fact that her music is sometimes awful has nothing to do with her ability to sing. It has to do with her ability to write songs.

Matthew should chill. This doesn’t make Beyonce look any better. Deja Vu got outpaced by Fergie on the singles charts. He’s insecure, so he’s gotta “set the record straight.” That’s such crap. Just leave it alone.
Also, Mario made a great point, EVERYBODY’S gonna have a different opinion about music. Matthew’s shooting himself in the foot trying to act like he doesn’t care.

That video is fierce! A vast improvement from “Deja Vu”.

Personally, compared to the singles off of her last album, both “Deja Vu” and “Ring the Alarm” leave me cold. Having said that, Papa Knowles should have just ignored that petition. People are going to talk smack about Beyonce on the Internet, just like they talk smack about every other celebrity on the planet. That’s the price you pay for being famous. By addressing a sorry little Internet petition, he made a mountain out of a molehill, and incited further smack talking in the process.
Oh, and thanks for the link to that hilarious 106 and Park performance, Slezak. I had forgotten all about that, and I really needed a good laugh!

I have “BDAY” & have tried listening to it multiple times through-out tonight, & I’ve gotta admit, nothing I’ve heard on it, has made me go back and go: OMG, LET ME HEAR THAT AGAIN! It definitely sounds like Beyonce only recorded this cd in less than a few weeks. They haven’t even begun to really play “Ring The Alarm” on Urban or Top 40 radio, & honestly I already am over the song. Its grating. And the video is a cheap Basic Instinct knock off. Is the teen audience she is attempting to lure in even goin to realize what she is referencing? Prolly not.
Also, I have to admit, I really really enjoy, though it is still very early, the Deena Jones & the Dreams single, “One Night Only” which is now available on iTunes. Its Beyonce and the girls from “DreamGirls” but is credited to Deena Jones & the Dreams! Go buy this instead of “Deja Vu”!!! The movie and soundtrack don’t come out until December, but this song is actually FUN.

    I couldn’t agree more.
Of the four top 10 hits from “Dangerously In Love,” three of them, in my opinion, have become modern-day classics: “Crazy In Love,” “Baby Boy,” and “Naughty Girl.” The fourth, “Me, Myself, and I” truly shows how talented Beyonce is given the right material. “Check On It” added to the streak created from DIL – a hot Swizz Beatz track that reminded me of classic Destiny’s Child.
Fast forward to “Deja Vu” and “Ring The Alarm.” Both tracks feature a screeching Beyonce (the bridge of DV; the opening of RTA). Honestly, the sheer sound of it makes me wince. Neither scream “instant classic” to me.
I have RSVP’d “no” to this b-day party.

    To Anna:
I know a Latoya. I was not aware that there are different spellings for the name. I did not say anything wrong about Beyonce’s dad, in fact, I felt he was right in defending his daughter. So Anna, go suck an egg!

  • Desi

Anna, you sound like a stalker. Scared of you girl! Is Beyonce’s talent fading? Is that what’s troubling you? You need to get a life.

  • Just Me

Anna, why did you use a whisker word? It seems silly coming from a know-it-all. umm… I dare to say that your diction is better than um, but it seems you used it to be a horse’s rear end.

  • Mandy

What is the big deal? Beyonce is just a booty shaking girl. Her type come a dime a dozen. Yes, she has a nice body to shake, but she should be more than that. There are enough over-simplified blacks on television and music-like hip hop, and stupid comedies.
