I’ve had a lot of shudder-inducing things brought to my attention today: this and this and this and this and this and this, for starters. (Let’s not even get into current events.)
But nothing has unsettled me more than the trailer for Todd Fields’ Little Children. From the perilously beautiful look of it, Fields is applying his unique brand of unblinking, meditative dread (In the Bedroom was his devastating debut) to this adaptation of Election author Tom Perrotta’s novel. The sick sensation of hurtling towards the inevitable, amplified by the sound of a distant train growing closer, louder…
Ah, but I’m getting ahead of myself. What’s it about, this movie? (No peeking at Perrotta’s Amazon page! We don’t want to get tarred for encouraging reading or anything.) The trailer is spectral, the synopsis vague. Clearly, it’s about infidelity in a small town. But knowing Field from his In the Bedroom track record, there’s a gothic twist, a heightening of the merely sad to dumbshow-opera.
I haven’t had my faith in humanity rattled in, literally, minutes. Can’t wait! (Oct. 6)

This looked interesting in EW’s fall movie preview, but I’m sorry…I thought In The Bedroom was deadly dull…am I the only one?
Well, this trailer certainly fulfilled my daily quota of Nameless Dread. Woo hoo.
WTF is wrong with Garfield?!?!?!?!?
Interesting. . . I actually read this book not that long ago. It was funny in a sarcastic way, so I’m surprised that it’s being viewed as a “thriller.”
Loved the book! Hope the movie is as good.
This book was great – I’m really looking forward to the movie.
And yeah – that Garfield acid trip was more than disturbing – what the hell was that all about?
Thank GOD they got good people to be in it, as well as to direct it…
Loved the book, I just hope they can capture the tone correctly.
I’m glad they don’t give anything away. Anyone in their right mind would go check out a film with Kate Winslet and Jennifer Connelly…so who cares what it’s about?
Am I the only oe who has goosebumps from that trailer…shudder
I love trailers that tell you the mood of the film without giving away every little plot point. Fabulous!
I loved In The Bedroom, have been waiting for another film by this director… and now, it looks like Oscars abounding the entire cast. PS: Patrick Wilson deserves huge stardom, I have been saying that since I saw him on stage years ago.
this book was great!! i read it a few months ago. i had no idea they were coming out with a movie! this was a fantastic book–people, go out and read it first–just in case the movie ends up being so-so!
Wow, if this movie is anything like In the Bedroom, it will be pointlessly depressing and suck.
Big fan of Perotta, definitely not a fan of In the Bedroom, but I’m excited anyways.
