Snap Judgment: CBS' 'Smith' posters

141528__smith_lFirst things first: I’ve seen the pilot for CBS’ new thieves-in-suburbia drama, Smith, and it’s good — so good, in fact, that it’s earned an early slot on my fall DVR slate. I guess that’s why I was so taken aback when I encountered CBS’ weird new promotional poster for the show while exiting the subway this morning. Why use an eerie mask hovering over Ray Liotta’s eerily disembodied face to drum up interest in a slickly produced ensemble that grabs and holds your attention for almost every second of its opening hour? Why not play up the presence of the always appealing Virginia Madsen, Simon Baker, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Franky G, and Amy Smart? Am I missing something here? Is anyone out there digging this poster? Or, like me, are you thinking "Do over!"?

judging by the poster, it seems like this show is about an entity that uses humans as hosts, kind of like BOB from Twin Peaks. If it was I would definately watch it but now that I know its about theives, I already lost interest. Good cast though…

Wow, thanks for the CAST, the poster said nothing about the CAST… I’m so there, definetely DO OVER… include the CAST…

  • Danna

The poster looks very slap-dash. I think a “do-over” is in order. I do like the simplicity of the poster, so maybe they should just have Liotta’s head with a ski mask pulled up to his forehead. The white mask is too Phantom of the Opera.

This reminds me of a hundred other things I’ve seen before (the poster I mean, not the show, which I haven’t seen yet myself). From nip/tuck to Phantom of the Opera to at least five different horror movies. Just awful, and far from original.

  • Ceballos

It kinda reminds me of the Jacob’s Ladder DVD cover.
To be honest, the first thing i thought was:
“Well, it’s not as bad as those dopey ‘Free to be…’ CW posters.”

The poster looks like Ray Liotta being caught in an indiscreet moment with the slasher from Nip/Tuck! I am also confused by every commercial I’ve seen promoting the show. I was thrilled to read your positive comments, they and the cast are what are going to make me give it a chance. Are they relying on the cast (half of whom I didn’t even know were in it!!) to draw viewers? Compare the confusing commercials for this show to the excessively explanatory ones for James Woods’ less complicated “Shark.” Let’s hope that a great show and great cast aren’t the victims of poor marketing.

Hey man, I see Ray Liotta’s face, and it’s underground. That instantly brings back thoughts of Goodfellas and that wierdo he played in Hannibal. After them two, I watch pretty much anything with Liotta in it, including this show you all just informed me about.
Thank you Mr. Slezak, for the heads up about a cool sounding show…

  • Kaybar

Am I losing it??? I would swear that I have seen commercials for (apparently) two different shows with the title “Smith”. One has Ray Liotta; the other has some guy shooting a couple of other guys on a beach. Is this the same show? Am I nuts? HELP!!!

  • cRAIG

you may be thinking of Shark, with James Woods, also on CBS…
i agree that Smith is one of a small handful of new shows i’m even giving a chance. the 2006 Freshmen class looks terrible. i forced myself through Vanished, and man was that bad! bad right up to the final scene where the guy at the bar sees the missing woman on TV, and tells his friend it was his finace. it looked like they were at the bar from The Perfect Storm. was the guy even an actor? yet another Point Pleasant for Fox: they hook you with an interesting premise and teaser ad, but the writing and execution is just horrible…
    Five Best Looking Fall Newcomers:
    1. Smith (CBS)
    2. Studio 60/30 Rock (NBC)
    3. Ugly Betty (ABC)
    uh, make that four…

  • Josh

Actually Kaybar is right and both promos are for Smith; he’s not thinking of ‘Shark.’ The other guy doing the shooting on the beach is Simon Baker; there’s also an ad that just features Amy Smart. It’s a big ensemble that they’re trying to promote.

  • Josh

I guess I should have added the promos are for the same show, there aren’t two shows named “Smith”… just a very large ensemble they’re promoting

  • KTS

LOL EP Sato… Too, too funny and too true. Didn’t some psycho killer wear one of those masks on a soap once too?

  • Jane

I’ve seen this imagery before. Was it A) Six Feet Under, B) Black Dahlia, or C) Nip/Tuck? Maybe it’s just me.

  • cackey

why all the interest in that sort of image for posters these days? if i just saw the poster and didn’t read your recommendation, i would never tune in for the pilot episode!

  • EP Sato

Wait! It’s the mask from V for Vendetta!
