Trailer Blazer: 'Tenacious D,' 'School for Scoundrels,' 'Amateurs'

Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny (Nov. 17) I know some of you will hate me for saying this (that’s why we’ve got a comments section), but I actually think I’d take a four-pack of According to Jims rather than see this movie. Is there something I’m not getting? Jack Black fans, please explain to this befuddled blogger. (By the by, if your computer won’t interface with MTV’s temperamental Overdrive site, you can click here and watch the trailer on YouTube.)

School for Scoundrels (Sept. 29) Now here’s an example of the rare romantic-comedy trailer that doesn’t skip over the whole comedy half of the equation. You cannot gauge the funny of Jon Heder serving a tennis ball directly into Billy Bob Thornton’s head until you’ve seen it for yourself. And I love the line, ”You can’t help yourself because yourself sucks.” (Could this be a potential catchphrase of autumn?) Side note: Who cloned Real World alum Jacinda Barrett (pictured, with Thornton and Heder, and also starring in The Namesake, Poseidon, and The Last Kiss)? She’s everywhere! It scares me a little.

The Amateurs
(Sept. 15) Hey, I know! How ’bout a trailer for a movie about a small-town porn production with fresh lines like ”No guts, no glory”? And, of course, jokes about swishy hairdressers and the size of black men’s members? Heh-heh-heh-heinous! Jeff Bridges, Isaiah Washington, and Lauren Graham, how could you guys? Booo!

    Tenacious D looks amazing…ly bad

I really hope that isn’t the catchphrase of autumn, because it truly blows. When did EW get so lame in their taste?

I don’t really “get” the whole TENACIOUS D thing, but I’m a huge fan of Jack Black. I will follow him anywhere (ok not to a screening of ENVY–that just plain looked awful). I can definately say I will eventually see THE PICK OF DESTINY.
I’m also curious about SCHOOL FOR SCOUNDRELS. Hopefully it will be the next big thing for John Heder cauze THE BENCHWARMERS stunk big time.

Tenacious D is bad, but it that’s the point. You are not suppose to take it seriously. Its low-brow humor and its supposed to be silly. Not everyone is going to get it, but a lot of people do. The trailer looks very funny to me… but then again, I own the Masterworks.

I don’t think Tenacious D is meant to sound bad at all, actually. The point is that they take themselves seriously and should, becuz almost no band/group could get so famous singing joke/folk songs. They deserve way more credit than 99% of today’s music, just for believing in the golden age of rock, and doing their best to not let it become what it mostly has already. Bring the new material, boys, we’re ready!

I actually caught an advance screening of the “D” a few months back. I thought it was hilarious! If you are an actual “fan” of Tenacious D, you will love this movie! The trailer doesn’t do it justice.

Does anyone else think that Billy Bob is doing an impersonation of Tommy Lee Jones in this picture?

  • Lynny

Billy Bob is more clean cut looking than usua, lbut that is all him.People sometimes get the two of them mixed up, though. It’s that whole semi-gruff country guy thing.

I’m just glad Tenacious D is coming out with a new album. This movie is just icing on the cake. Delicious icing that I will be enjoying on opening day.
