Which news is the nerdiest?

Categories: Film, Television

Readers, I put to you a timeless question: Which of the following news nuggets is the nerdiest?

A. Is it this interview with Dawn of the Dead director Zack Snyder, who’s currently adapting Frank Miller’s quasi-historical Spartan battle-rite 300? This one’s hard to beat: Snyder’s next project (after 300) is Watchmen, which is to the nerd community what brains are to the zombie community. Snyder doesn’t have many specific ideas yet, but he’s aware of how wrong things can go. He says studio suits "think it’s a superhero movie. They think it’s Fantastic Four, and, guys, it really isn’t." Will he use David Hayter’s script? "A lot of it. Here’s the thing with Watchmen. Since I’ve been involved with it, [writer] Alex [Tse] came on, the Hayter script still exists, but I think honestly for me, Alex’s take and Hayter’s take, they’re both versions of Watchmen but for me, they’re not it. No one’s cracked it." There you go, assembled nerds: Watchmen: That much closer to never actually happening. (Thanks to Superherohype.com.)

B. Green Arrow and Jimmy Olsen are coming to Smallville. Jimmy Olsen — well, that’s a gimme. Apparently, he’ll squire the long-neglected Chloe (impossibly adorable Allison Mack), whose single-ness has become almost as cruel and unusual as the Clark-Lana scenes. This, too, makes sense. But Green Arrow? Now that’s some good nerding right there. DC/Warner Bros. has been mainstreaming fan fave Oliver Queen, billionaire-turned-archer-vigilante, for a few years now (most notably on Cartoon Network’s Justice League Unlimited); but I’d never have guessed he’d see primetime so soon, even as a guest hero.

Nerdy enough? No? Well, try this on for size:

C. A brewing controversy over one of DC’s most venerable heroes, The Green Lantern. As you may be aware, there’s a script in development. But before you click that link, note the following: a) You may have to give some login information and b) do not proceed if you’re utterly humorless. This script in question was written by Robert Smigel, creator and voice of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. He holds dual degrees in Nerd and Nerd-baiting. And his Green Lantern (a tubby, Jack Black-ish oaf by the name of Jud Plato) is depicted eating a live coyote. See, Green Lanterns are chosen based on fearlessness, and Jud’s competing on a Fear Factor-ish show, so… have you already logged off, Lantern-heads? Yes, probably so, if the script review linked above is any indication. Having watched Superman and Batman receive such respectful, practically religious screen treatments of late, you’re probably dismayed to see a tongue-in-cheek take on GL — a lion of the DC pantheon. Perhaps you have a point. Still. Eating a live coyote is funny. Smigel is funny. And the world can live with a multiplicity of superhero interpretations, methinks.

By far the most upsetting piece is the one on Green Lantern. There were rumours awhile back stating that Jack Black might star in a GL comedy piece, but for the love of God, I hope the producers look at the returns for Mystery Men, My Super Ex-Girlfriend and realize that the public (let alone ‘fanboys/girls”) are not willing to shill out for funny superheroes.

A short conversation between Terry Gilliam and Alan Moore on the subject of adapting Watchmen (from when Gilliam was attached, many years ago):
Gilliam: “So Alan, how would you adapt this into a film?”
Moore: “Well, it’s quite simple, Terry. I wouldn’t.”
I have nothing more to add to that.

I disagree about the concerns with Green Lantern. Guy Gardner, the best Green Lantern ever, had entirely tongue in cheek comics. As a contrast to the hard core superhero who has no flaws lameness of DC’s 1970’s and 1980’s books, Guy Gardner had a rough past and a hard to love personality. As for these parody movies making no money, look at the receipts for the Incredibles and Sky High. If the movie’s clever and actually funny, people will go see it.
And for real, who wants to waste through the unentertaining years of Hal Jordan, the Marvel Wannabe-ishness of John Stewart (Waa, Marvel has a Black Iron Man so we had to copy and make a Black Green Lantern), or the pure lameness of Kyle Rayner (for real, a comic book artist who had a hot green skinned girlfriend? pa-leaaase!)?
I will be waiting in line with my Green Lantern Corps ring on and my green t-shirt for that flick!

    Green Lantern is the nerdiest.
Jimmy Olsen isn’t going to be as nerdy on Smallville. Aaron Ashmore isn’t. And I agree very strongly abuot Allison Mack being impossibly adorable. No way, even a hunkier Jimmy Olsen would be good enough for her. She’s my favorite. She’s the one who should be dating superheroes.

Chloe is awesome – and you’re right long neglected for someone who is that adorable and a cut above both Jimmy *and* Green Arrow. Hopefully we’ll have Clark Kent get into journalism this year and realize how amazing his best friend is. Also that Chloe garners more media intrest this year, because, seriously, why is a girl that looks like *Allison Mack* (not to mention her acting skills) not being interviewed and photographed all the time?

  • chunkey81

Uh, YEAH Chloe is adorable–as well as is the actress that plays her, the amazingly talented Allison Mack! I’m glad I’m not the only one to notice that Chloe has been deprived of a man for far too long(as well as how painful the Clana scenes are–AMEN!) But hopefully we can move past Jimmy/Chloe and onto Clark/Chloe. Because those two are the real heart of the show….

  • Chlois4Me

So good to hear that at LAST Allison Mack/Chloe is getting some love! You’re so right–she is adorable, and I’m hoping she gets the attention she deserves, not only from just Jimmy, but ultimately Clark as well! That’s why I keep watching this show….

I am a Chloe fan and Allison Mack is the reason Chloe has that spark no one can come close to touching! As a fan, it would be nice to see her in the media more. It is Chloe’s turn to have the love passed her way. I am also looking forward to further Chloe/Clark development, they’re so great together!

Allison Mack is way overdue for some wonderful attention. It stinks that a semi-regular character like Erica Durance is considered more important than her after 5 years on the show. I didn’t sign up to watch a Lois Lane fest, unless the show decides to go with Chloe-is-Lois theory. I certainly won’t be buying the dvds if she is, that’s for sure. Allison is the show’s saving grace – along with Michael Rosenbaum, of course!

  • TurtleGirl

Damn straight Chloe’s been long-neglected. She’s a great character on Smallville, and Allison Mack is a damn good actress. Hopefully the show will get it together and start promoting her as one of the best things on Smallville.

  • Margaret

Yes, Chloe, and the actress who portrays her have been sadly neglected and it’s way past time such a talented actress receieves the recognition she has earned. Although, while it may seem great she finally gets to date someone, it’s telling that Chloe gets Jimmy of all people instead of a bonafide superhero like Green Arrow whom the lackluster “Lois” naturally gets. And really, that’s all a ruse to avoid giving us what we were promised by Chloe and Clark’s surprise kiss in Vessel, which is an honest Clark and Chloe relationship after five boring years of Clark and Lana and Clark chasing one awful girl after another. The Vessel kiss has garnered more interest and comment about Smallville than anything else in a long time and the Smallville writers should deliver instead of back pedalling. Give us Clark chasing after Chloe and grovelling for his horrible neglect of her all this time. Anything else is unacceptable.
Note: Using the previes button erased my previous post as far as I can tell. Don’t use it!

I felt that Allison Mack have been neglected by the producer/creator of the smallville, look at the 2006 CW promo, why ain’t chloe in the promo. She deserve it more than Lois, Allison have been in the show for almost 5 years and yet she don’t get to be in the promo. I really hope that the producer/creator would notice that Allison Mack is the best thing in the show, that is the only reason I watch beside Tom Welling.

  • Mab

So, now do we get some profile or article on Allison Mack? I’ve been hanging out for ages for some news about her! The network certainly seems to love everyone, but Allison at the rate they’re going! I can’t believe they’re going with a Clark/Lois relationship this year! Just when I have been WAITING eagerly for the new season, I find out the writers were pulling our leg in Vessel last year! Jeez.

  • lara

chloe needs to start getting some attention she deserves to be with clark, we chlark fans have waited for it to happen and hopefully it might happen in season 6 and maybe at the end of smallville the chloe=lois should happen too.

  • Daniel

Its pretty sad that the writting for Smallville is so bad that they turn there backs on the most talked about aspect and the one that got the most positive reaction from the season five finale..which was the Chloe and Clark kiss in the DP.
It’s also pretty sad that their sticking Chloe was such a lightweight like Jimmy Olsen, someone that she regretfully according to the shows canon lost her virginity to and said that she didn’t find what she was looking for in that relationship. Now I’m supposed to by that she’s going to be excited to see him again. Nice try Al/Miles but thats whats called crappy writing.
