So you know I’m not one to question the taste level of Project Runway’s magnetic minx, Nina Garcia, but I had two huge issues with the judging panel last night. First, as EW’s Mark Harris pointed out in his brilliant TV Watch, how come Bradley’s ”droopy bronze lunchbag of a blouse with built-in room for an osteoporosis hump in the back” didn’t land him at or near the bottom of the fabric heap? And secondly, how come there’s been no love — heck, barely even a full minute of airtime this season — for consistently innovative Michael? I thought his dog-show dress was saucy, especially the cross-paneled bust that reminded me a little bit of braided bread. And his coffee-filter concoction from episode 1 was a far richer blend (sorry) than Keith’s basic blue sheet dress, no? Oh Nina, Nina, Nina, what gives? I am not doing this with you, todaaaaaay.
Where's the love for 'Project Runway''s Michael?

it’s simple, (i’m not going to play the race card) The one thing that Michael is one of the most Talented, but he’s also one of the most decent, respectful and un-pretentious of the characters. In other words, Michael has morals, and when it comes to Reality Television, they are going to give more time to the dramatic, the untalented, and the most likely to have a nervous breakdown. Yes, Keith is a hideous human being, but I rather watch him and feel morally superior, than watch Michael and be depressed that I am not 1. as nice and 2. as talented as that amazing guy.
I agree, with the Micheal stuff at least (I kind of dug Bradley’s design)Micheal is a real talent but like Miles said he is not a “character” he seem very polite and unfortunatly is being over shadowed at this point by the others who are on the edge of sanity [read: Vincent] But at this point he is my fav and has yet to disapoint me.
Eh. Michael’s coffee filter dress was cool. Last night’s dress was just ok for me. I love it from the waist down. The top was a little to.. much.
THANK YOU gosh does he have to make adress uot of gold toget his due.this is out of control!fine they gave the birthday boy a break but to choose his over micheal is wack.
I agree that Michael’s camera time has been mysteriously slight, and also that last night’s dress was fab. But that coffee filter dress was straight out of an issue of Martha Stewart’s “Kids” magazine, and I think it was also featured on her show during an episode about making Halloween costumes out of household items.
Couldn’t agree more. More Michael and much less Angela. In fact, please God let her be the one who gets booted off in disgrace next week.
I thought Michael’s coffee filter dress looked a lot like season 2’s Chloe Dao’s blue skater dress for Sasha Cohen.
I, too, love Michael. Even his dresses aren’t shown until they appear on the runway and they’re knockouts. Plus he’s easy on the eyes. I’m reserving complete judgment until we see more of him, but I think he’s my second favorite personality to Kayne. Who is too freaking cute for words.
More Michael, please!
I love him too! I just keep telling myself that they’re saving him for all the REALLY cool stuff later on in the show.
I totally agree. I get why Michael isn’t getting any love from the producers (in terms of airtime); after all, he isn’t loud, obnoxious or insane, but why no love on the runway? I really thought his dress had a great chance this week– it was innovative without being nuts, which is saying something– and I absolutely adored the coffee-filter dress. Plus, I think it’s just so cool that he and Laura are best buddies now.
I love Michael’s designs and I’ve been wondering the same thing. Maeve, I thought the same thing when I saw the coffee filter dress, but I still loved it. I think they’re leaving too many people out this year. We hardly ever see Bonnie either.
Only 3 shows in and Michael has proven to be consistent in every challenge. Michael has personality to spare but we are being forced to watch the same character type from previous seasons (Angela=Wendy Pepper, Jeffrey=Santino). I want to learn more about Michael. I was shocked when Bradley’s blah skirt and blouse was considered best. Nina if you can see that hot mess of a blouse in Elle then you have confirmed all my reasons why I stopped buying Elle years ago.
We are not seeing much of Michael because he is going to make it very far in this show. Like many unscripted (AKA “reality”) shows, the early episodes are when there are so many new faces, so the editors deliberately focus on the winners and the losers of the early challenges. The editors know that there will be time later on in the series to show Michael’s talent and persona. These characters are sometimes said to be “flying under the radar,” but in the case of Project Runway, I believe that it is an editorial direction, rather than a strategy of Michael.
Oh, thank you. I love Michael. I loved his dress, and I think he’s incredibly talented and seems like a very nice guy. I hope his two seconds of screen-time per episode indicates that he makes it far too.
As much as I’ve loved everything I’ve seen Michael do so far, I’m not worried. The comments about how he’s not giving off a powerful personality are right on key. If he was obnoxious, yeah he’d get airtime. But the way his designs are, I’m confident he’ll make it to the later episodes, when there will be less people, and that’s when he’ll get plenty of attention and I can drool over him for more than two seconds at a time.
Screw the topic. Quoting Whitney Houston was so hysterical. I think I’ve turned more than a few of my friends on to you because of that. We were on the floor. Thanks for that!
I agree with what a few of you have said (sorry, I don’t have names, you know who you are). By focusing on Malan or Angela and the other favourites, it will build more drama when one of them gets kicked off. By basically ignoring a whole group of people, including Michael, they can bring them out later, giving us something new closer to the finale… Michael’s great… Despite his coffee filter dress being basic, I’d like to see any of you haters make a coffee filter dress as nice… Or any coffee filter dress for that matter!
The judges have been acting stupid this season.
The first challenge was INNOVATION, but then they award the guy who uses a simple cotton sheet WTF?
The second challenge was DESIGN&TEAMWORK, but then they keep the woman who refuses to sketch a design and can’t work on a team and ditch the guy who had his original design idea selected and demonstrated awesome teamwork with his partner. WTF?
Finally, in the third task, designing an outfit for WOMAN & DOG, they keep the woman who dresses her models in the EXACT SAME CLOWN OUTFIT SHE HERSELF IS WEARING and the guy who REFUSES to design anything for the dog and also LIES on the runway, but ditch the girl who followed the rules and made something wearable. WTF?
The judges are whack! Of course, they would praise Bradley’s ugly sack garment thrown together at the last minute and ignore Michael’s beautiful design.
Nina Garcia is a joke.
ive been asking the same question since week 1! for the past 3 weeks, michael’s dresses have been worthy of the top 3 every time, and i never understand why they are not shown more often. plus, michael is so cute
is it just my dreams, or is there a possibility that he will pull a lance bass and confess that he is gay? please!
I couldn’t agree more. Michael is being waaay overlooked.
I love that he and Laura seem to have some sort of weird kinship. They’re my favorite.
I think Michael’s designs are gorgeous! As another poster mentioned, I believe Michael will be in the final 3 (or so I hope), which is why producers are not focusing on him in the early episodes. The more dramatic players get the camera time in the early eps.
Here’s to Michael in the final 3! Cheers!
I am really, really hoping this is a Daniel V. situation, and that Michael will soon be moving to the forefront. They can’t seriously be more into Bradley’s “The Hunchback of I’m Copying Danny V.’s” outfit. Let’s show some love to Atlanta, PR.
All I have to say is Kara Saun!!!!. As brilliant as she was, she was barely featured. Kara was low key and sweet. Then she was featured later on and was in the final two. This is should be a good omen for Michael. Michael for the WINNN!!!!
I actually thought Kara Saun got quite a lot of attention focused on her in the beginning because she was winning most of the challenges.
I would like to see a bit more of Michael but in a way, at this early stage, I’m sort of relieved because it’s the tendency of the editors to focus the most attention on the “characters” and on those who are going to be leaving at the end of the show. When I saw that Michael wasn’t getting much attention last episode I relaxed a little because I knew he wasn’t going home.
I can sort of see why people think his coffee filter dress was similar Chloe’s. They’re both layered but if you compare them side by side, they actually look very different because of the shape of the coffee filters.
It’z cuz he a brothaaa…
My hope is that we’re not seeing much of Michael now because we’ll be seeing much more of him later – like toward the end when it’s “Michael for the win!” Or at least in teh finals (I personally like Uli and Allison as well, even if I have a distinct feeling that I know who one of the final three is – someone that I don’t like).
I hate that I have to go onto bravo.com just to get a good view of Michael’s creations. Though I do love how Laura and him are best friends. Its cute. His outfits are amazing! If you remember Chloe didn’t get much airtime at the beginning last season, I think the producers get the crazies out of the way first. Go Michael!
Could not agree more. He’s in my top four…and I love that he and Laura are BFF
that’s what i’m talkin about! fight the power!
love michael, love the dresses he makes. where IS michael kors?
