Stop forlornly polishing that vintage Chevy Chase maquette and read this: The Fletch prequel is back on the front burner, with Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence writing and directing. And surprise, surprise, he wants Mr. J. Zacholas Braff in the role of many-aliased, basketball-obsessed, silly-slick superjournalist Irwin "Fletch" Fletcher. The script will be based on the novel Fletch Won, by Fletch creator Gregory Macdonald.
I will now take questions, mostly from myself:
1) What does this mean for the now-scrubbed Kevin Smith version? Well, it certainly means Jason Lee can stop cramming Lakers stats.
2) Will Braff, if cast, create an emo Fletch for an emo generation? God, let’s hope not. There would not be enough Dixie Cups in the world to hold my tears.
3) What is the best way of fletching on RuneScape? I don’t know what that means… but maybe this?

I liked Fletch when it came out, and I understand that Fletch was one of Braff’s favorite films, so with his comedic talent I am sure that he’ll make Chevy Chase proud.
IMO there were only 2 actors suitable for this role – Zach Braff and Topher Grace. I’m not as worried about Braff as I am about Lawrence scripting. Braff will be solid and funny. His directing an emo film has little to do with his comedic chops.
If I hear one more emo this or emo that I’ll explode. There is no such thing as emo.
So, stop using it!
Braff sounds like an excellent choice. However, the actual character in the books was a blond, though it didn’t stop Chevy from turning it into one of his best roles.
OK, I’m a huge Scrubs fan, as anyone who knows me can attest. Which means that I love a vast percentage of the words that come out of Bill Lawrence’s world, and that I think Zach Braff is hilarious. That said, and I’m basing this solely on Chevy Chase in the first movie, Jason Lee would have been much better. He’s got a little more of a con man in him that Braff doesn’t have. He could even keep the cheesy mustache that is his co-star from “My Name is Earl”.
Hahahahahha!!! That babysitters club stuff is quality, Scott. Thanks for making me laugh out loud
OK, you just made my day with that Braff on The Baby-sitter’s Club video. I LMAO. But, Dawn must be a ho, cuz in the video I own, she’s going after Shane McDermott (of Swan’s Crossing fame!).
This is terrible terrible news- Jason Lee- not a bad choice- Ryan Reynolds- THE choice. Zack Braff??? This is an insult to the original series and to Chevy. Kiss another childhood memmory good-bye.
Thanks for nothing you skunks.
My insides are all a quiver at the prospect of this… no, wait, that’s just my unborn baby. But seriously, I think this just might work – not as good of a choice as a Jason Lee/Kevin Smith version, but I’m optimistic.
Yeah sure, sounds good, whatever.
You’re right Tim, this is awful news. Mr. Braff is a talented guy (see Scrubs, which is great) but he’s not Fletch. Just isn’t that guy. Enough with the remakes, especially when it comes great comedies defined by their performances. What’s next, a Caddyshack remake with the brother from My Name Is Earl in Bill Murray’s slot? No thanks. Get creative Hollywood!!
Ryan Reynolds should be the new Fletch…he’d bring the snarkiness that Chevy Chase had, plus a decent amount of physicality (to play Basketball?)…Zach is great on Scrubs, but he’s not Fletch…
I LOVE Zach Braff and will see him in anything. I also love Fletch.
joho – I second your emotion.
Is this a joke? There is only one Fletch, Chase made that movie what it became. This movie will flop, gaurenteed and no one who liked the originals will watch it. All Braffs little girls will watch it. They don’t even know that there was a FLETCH movie before this. Hollywood is ruining great films and this generation sucks.
