Thomas Pynchon readers are a conspiracy-minded lot anyway (the down-the-rabbit-hole experiences of reading Gravity’s Rainbow and The Crying of Lot 49 will make anybody paranoid), and the author’s famous refusal to be photographed or interviewed makes every dispatch from the reclusive writer (like his hilariously anonymous Simpsons guest spot, pictured) seem like a mysterious oracular pronouncement for the faithful to decipher. So it’s no wonder that this week’s appearance, disappearance, and reappearance of a blurb (attributed to Pynchon himself) on the Amazon page for Pynchon’s forthcoming novel set off a frenzy of speculation in Pynchonland.
Now, I admit to being a Pynchon cultist myself, but I don’t really care about the Mystery of the Blinking Blurb. (Turns out there was no mystery; Pynchon really did write the synopsis, which is back online as I write this, and that the book does have a title, which is Against the Day.) I’m just excited that there’ll be a new Pynchon novel in December. I mean, the guy’s almost 70, he’s published only five novels in the last 43 years (the last, Mason & Dixon, came out nine years ago), so at that far-from-prolific rate, this book could be his last. Besides, read that Amazon description; it sounds pretty cool. Wonder if he’ll send JT Leroy out to do his press tour for him.
YES! The Crying of Lot 49 was a college fave, so I can’t wait to see some new material. His Simpsons cameo did indeed rock the house. Now, if only there was a way for Pynchon and Murakami to get together and co-create something. It’d be like Salvador Dali hanging out with Public Enemy. Or like Butch cassidy and Mozart…
