'24': Another day, another SPOILER ALERT!

Categories: Television

145039__db_lHard to believe it’s been just five days since we met ol’ Jackie Bauer. What does Day 6 of 24 have in store? The Web gremlins at Comingsoon.net seem to have some good intel.

[SPOILER ALERT: From here on out, I stop beating around the bush, so cease reading immediately if you don't want to know anything about Bauer Part 6: Big Trouble in Big China.]

With that out of the way: I applaud the fictional election of D.B. Woodside (pictured) to the presidency of the United States. I first encountered Mr. Woodside as Principal Robin Wood of Sunnydale High, which, previous principals can tell you, is one of the toughest jobs in public service. (My mistake — they can’t tell you; they’re all dead.) People will accuse Wayne Palmer (DB’s 24 character) of trading on the family name after his brother David was martyred for ratings last season. Pish-posh: Wayne’s record is sterling. Sure, he was at the scene of Sherri Palmer’s murder, but c’mon, what president hasn’t been party to the killing of his conniving sister-in-law?

Also on board for next season: the glorious and underutilized Regina King as Wayne’s sister, influential advocacy lawyer Angela Palmer. The suspense is running high: Can a strong black woman actually survive a season of 24 without being devious, imperious or just plain evil? Only the turbine whoosh-boom of the 24 clock will tell.

Shucks, I was hoping Regina King would be Mrs. Wayne Palmer, a new kind of kick-butt first lady, NOT his sister! Where was she when President David Palmer (her brother also, right) was killed?

  • Robert

I already knew all this. E! already reported all of it. But I did not know that Regina was going to be Wayne’s sister. Thanks for that.

Good person to have in the White House for maximum chance of Jack extraction!
Then again, “24″ might show Bauer holding the Great Wall hostage to facilitate his escape during a crucial sweeps episode, so who knows if he’ll actually need any help from President Palmer II: Electric Boogaloo.

  • Sam

Interesting point, Lisa. Given the instant ramifications David’s death had on Wayne, shouldn’t it have affected his sister too? Whatever. I’ll reserve judgment on this casting move. I’ve always liked Wayne, but I’m not sure about him in the Oval Office.

  • Chris Powell

Wayne… as president? On what planet?
This show is becoming more and more unrealistic with every season. Wayne’s never held an elected office in his life, working only in the capacity of political operative prior to his bro appointing him Chief of Staff. So how in the world do the 24 writers figure this guy could possibly, possibly win a national general election for the United States presidency? Geez, this show is going so downhill so fast, it’s criminal.

Wayne as a President seems beleivable to someone who may actually live in the 24-Universe:
As a citizen of the 24-USA, you’ve elected a President who got shot out of the sky only to bring in someone who was exposed for the most treasonous acts ever accused on a President – real or fictional. Of course they would elect someone who may seem similar in politcs if not RELATED to a President who wasn’t that bad for the everyday USA citizen. It makes perfect sense on why they’d elect him: They just want a President that’ll actually LAST 4 years in office, that’s all . . .
Wayne will do just fine, I’m sure. And I bet (actually hope)he’s been looking for Jack . . .

And how long was Dubya the governor of Texas? And how unbelievable was his ascendency to the presidency? Truth can be stranger than fiction, you know!

As for right now, I could not care what the plot is on “24″. I just so HAPPY that Regina King can star is something that’s actually good (Miss Congeniality 2, anyone?). She is one of the most talented actresses out there but she gets NO recognition. Trust me, by next year she will get an Emmy nomination (then again, if this year will be like next year, the Emmys deserve to DIE!!!!!)

  • Howard

Lisa, she was probably contacted at some point during the day, and went to the funeral AFTER THE SEASON ENDED.

  • Tyler

Yeah, I agree with Lisa and Howard. The show can’t possibly show everything. Regina (or Angelina, I guess) was probably there after. This is a show though. I’m talking as if it were real. Haha. Anyways..
.. and no offense Chris Powell. You’re an idiot. 24 is getting better and better. Wayne as President is a tiny bit odd.. however.. he did work along side David in season 3. He, apparently, worked with David in the begining of season 5. The 24 world loved his brother. So, eh, why not?

  • Chris

“… and no offense Chris Powell. You’re an idiot.”
No offense taken from an idiot such as yourself, Tyler. Wayne as president is more than a tiny bit odd; it’s as implausible as it gets. 24 used to pride itself for its reality-driven writing. It’s slowly disintegrated into something that now looks like it’s being written by a team of 12-year-olds.
