And the winner of the PopWatch quote of the day is…
"To be fearless enough to rock a national cover in curlers — at the peak of her career — is the sign of a true independent woman." — Smokey Fontaine, editor in chief of Giant magazine, discussing the magazine’s new cover shot of Beyoncé
No argument here!
In other news of the Destiny’s Child frontwoman, the video for her new single, "Déjà Vu," is now streaming over at MTV Overdrive (and at YouTube, for Mac users who can’t interface with MTV’s persnickety site). While I’m with the fab folks at the must-read Beauty N The Beat blog that it’s a little disconcerting to (once again) see Ms. Knowles acting crazy in love for Jay Z, while he feigns indifference, I respectfully disagree that her dance moves are "unforgivable." Sure, Beyoncé gets spastic in the sand (kinda like Mya in "Case of the Ex") and her Krazy-Eyez Killa expressions are just thisside of scary, but she looks fierce doing it. And props for saying no to carefully choreographed footwork and choosing to simply get down with the git-down. But that’s just me. What do you think of the new Beyoncé cover shoot and video? Do they "Cater 2 U," or are they more a case of "No, No, No"?

i just don’t like the song, so the video kinda doesn’t matter at this point.
While I think the song is pretty good, I think she overdoes it a bit in the video with hand gesturing throughout the video. I don’t think she has to heavily chereograph everything she does, but I’d prefer no choreography to watching her sit in a chair and vogueing for two minutes. As for the sand dancing, I thought less of Mya and more of Shakira. They’re morphing into one another at this point.
And… I’m a bit tired of the Jay-Z guest vocal, too. If she can overpower Kelly and Michelle on Destiny’s Child tracks, certainly she can put her man in the background rather than the foreground.
What’s the big deal about posing in curlers for a mag?
It’s not like she was photographed just out of bed or in the process of wearing real-life curlers.
The pic is still airbrushed, styled and posed to death by an army of stylists, digital wizards, make up artists, and assistants.
And the video…UGH!
Beyonce has never done an interesting or original video in her life…always the same spastic gyrating, the same tired come-hither looks, the same crawling towards the camera, trying too hard to be sexy, and the same “sultry” pouting of lips.
Yawn.
I could look that good with curlers, if a professional hairdresser put them in, and I got my make-up done, and the magazine airbrushed all my flaws after the shoot.
Thank you!! I completely agree with all of this, ‘cept the curls thing. Anyways. I watched the video two days ago and ugh. What’s with the eyes? Seriously. And the dancing? She looks like she is having a seizure. That is no Shakira dancing! To me, the video reminds me of all the others.
.. and don’t even get me started on the song. I hate it. I’m not a big Beyonce fan, but I know she can do better. Yeah, and lose Jay-Z.
b is an entertainer, pure and simple. it helps that she can sang (that’s sing but with an “a” for emphasis). it amazes me when people hate on folks like beyonce, mariah, and christina who have real pipes, yet they drool over idiots like britney spears.
If you haven’t heard the remix version of Deja Vu, run immediatley to your local gay bar tonight – it is hot. Plus, I think the remix version is minus Jay-z. Sorry butb I can’t quite remember scince I had too many cosmos in me at the time.
I’ll always love the “Lose My Breath” video, it’s so streetghetto.
I don’t think I’m ready for that jelly.
Haven’t seen the video, but it sounds like the dancing is reminiscent of her recent BET awards performance. Ick. The faux-bellydancing was more Spaz than Shakira.
I’m a fan of B, but not this song.
Next single, please.
Well, ceej. I think Beyonce is a talented singer. She isn’t as good as others, but she can sing. This song sounds more like screaming.. but I am not denying her talent. I love Christina and Mariah as well. I think it’s ridulous that people actually like Britney.. and now Paris.
The video scares me though.
Love the song, love the video, period. CANNOT wait til Dreamgirls.
Don’t like the song. Hate the video!
In curlers and full makeup, that is. LOL
So I haven’t caught the video yet, but I believe you can pick up a copy of GIANT magazine for free at your local Virgin Megastore with purchase. I know Beyonce is pulling out all the stops for a media blitz, but lets all take a moment to breathe & remember its ONLY JULY. This is her 1st single, & the album doesn’t even drop for 2 more LONG SUMMER months til Sept. Yes she has alot of competition, esp. since The Xtina double album will be out before hers, & soon followed after by Justin & Janet’s…but fear not,I heard another track called “WOMAN LIKE ME” & though its not nearly as uptempo as “DEJA VU”, it sounds promising…
And posing in the curlers is original & fun, but I agree about the picture being digitally perfected before being published…..
Beyonce showed you the side that you dont think about during Mardi Gras. The swamplands, the gritty night clubs that gave birth to jazz music, the plantations where many of Beyonce fans trace their ancestry, the voodoo. You weren’t paying attention. Watch the video once more (or twice if you’re just that slow).
Hot video nothing else to say. This is the reason why she is Beyonce Knowles the girl is BAD!!! Glad it wasn’t typical. I will be voting tonight. She deserves to be high on the countdown b/c these other chicks aint messing wit her.
Great video. its exciting and i love how she incorporates fashion in her videos. Fashionistas would love this video.
Why is the video in new orleans? Its in neworleans becuz the song is about “deja vu” which is a french term, and Beyonce is of french creole descent. Her grandmother was a creole. Beyonce’s ancestry is in the bajou, in new orleans. Her video was loaded with references and allusions to creole and neworleans life. The bayou, the plantation, the spooky nights, voodoo, all of that stuff. She even laced it with african dances that were ritualistic to both creole and non creole cultures in the bayou. I think this video is amazing. She looks amazing, the concept is amazing. She always has the best treatments for her video. This video couldnt have been any better. Its simply breath taking. She gives a 100% in her dancing even when it isnt contemporary choreography. I love the chemistry between her and J. It was hott.
Is she having a seizure?
ryan, i guess because she can sing better than I could ever dream, I give her much props. now, if brit/paris and I had a showdown, I’d clean their clocks. i just think we are far too critical sometimes of people who are less deverving of it, and far less critical of those who warrant scrutiny.
i kinda liked the dancing, very tribal and real. but I DO NOT like how she behaves with jay-z. she’s tough and powerful, then he comes in and she becomes his “video sex slave”. that part really bugged me. i like, no, love jay-z’s music, but she looked like some poor little helpless shrew when his part came on. that part should have been done differently. also, am i THE ONLY PERSON who likes the “screaming” at the end of the song? i think it’s hot. i’ll be spending SO much money in the next couple months, i’ll need a second job. too much music i want comin out!!
Not really big on the song. Saw the video and thought it would make me like the song..but nothing. I can though appreciate the comparison of her dancing which relates to the song, even though she looks like she’s having a seizure.
I love the song! The treatment for the video seems like it would’ve been better for another song, maybe a ballad but I commend her for doing something different. You don’t become an icon by playing it safe and this girl is in it for the long run. She’s no Janet Jackson dancing wise but she has her own sort of Tina Turner channeling Josephine Baker style and she works it to the fullest. I see another hit album for her.
The song is less than what I expected from B! I was hoping she’d take it to the next level with her new single, but really, it’s just more of the same. Beyonce is a powerhouse, BUT Christina Aguilera is hands down the most creative and talented pop star in the industry today. She’s in a class of her own-I guess that’s why she isn’t talked about that much. I’m hating the Britney/ Paris comments! Britney and Paris are not of the same entity! Britney is actually a highly skilled and professional performer (say what you will about her vocal abilities, or lack thereof). Britney has alot of hits and MANY young female artists have been formed in her image (regardless of what one might think of that image). That makes her an icon. Beyonce is on her way to icon status as well, but she rushed this album and you can tell by the first single. She has not taken time to let her style and writing evolve. All she’s done is regurgitate the same formula and treatment she’s been using in her songs and videos for years now. I’m sure her CD will be a hit, but that doesn’t mean it will be good. I advise everyone to pick up Xtina’s latest-someone who ONLY gets attention b/c of her talent and not b/c she can look hot in curlers.
This? From the woman who brought us “Crazy in Love” and “Naughty Girl”? Underwhelming, disappointing, and even boring. I can’t even get riled up enough to rant against it, a sure sign of waning interest in Beyonce’s career. She needs a good song and fast!!
I think the song is blah, and the video is alright. My biggest irritation is that in the video, when she is dancing around Jay-Z during his part, she is chomping gum obnoxiously. Watch it…..when she wraps her arms around him from the back she looks like Britney Spears in a Dateline interview!! What gum has to do with Creole, I do not know. The director should have had her spit it out, or at least edited around it. Ech!
Maybe Beyonce and her people know something that I don’t. Maybe they found out that crazie dancing and literal screaming in your song (in addition to singing in the most unflattering key ever) and old style clothes mixed with modern Jay-Z and the rest of this song and video nonsense is what people want. I just don’t understand but if you do, more power to you. I will not work any harder to try to get it myself.
Beyonce’s at the peak of her career? Anyone else find that insanely shallow? What is she, 23? Are we that ageist now, that on only her second album and barely out of her teens, we assume it’s all gonna be down hill from there? Anyone remember Tina Turner and Diana Ross? Neither “peaked” until after a couple decades into their careers. She’s just getting started.
who cares about this song or the singer, everyone is on http://www.singlesPalace.com , 100% FREE dating site. Yes FREE to do anything you want on there unlike match.com who charge people money once they joined….this one is the opposite its FREE
Ummm NO, NO, NO! Do they not learn (not copy) from the icon herself Madonna on the video artform.
