This just in from the Office of Corporate Synergy: On July 22, NBC will help hype Universal Pictures’ Miami Vice by airing the pilot of the TV show that inspired it (along with behind-the-scenes clips introduced by Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell). And while a refresher course on the pastel glories of Crockett and Tubbs 1.0 doesn’t seem like a half-bad strategy for promoting what looks like another unappealing TV-to-movie remake, it also could serve as a template for networks trying to revitalize the vast dumping grounds known as Saturday nights. Indeed, why not use Saturdays to air forgotten hits, classic concerts, and miniseries, and shows that have developed cultish post-cancellation followings? I’d totally tune in if Fox indulged in ”yanked-too-soon” marathons of Profit, Kindred: The Embraced, and Wonderfalls, or if CBS reheated that campy dish called Central Park West. What shows and specials would you dig out of mothballs if you ruled the airwaves?

Is it still too soon to suggest Arrested Development? Stupid Fox.
I’d have them pull out “Cupid,” Jeremy Piven’s inventive one season show, “Brisco County Jr.” with the great Bruce Campbell, and “Frank’s Place,” all of which I’d be happy to watch again.
Firefly. For the love of all Browncoats, show Firefly again!
Firefly, Strange Luck, Brisco County Jr. (which comes out on DVD next week!!!), Dark Angel, Threshold
Those are the ones right off the top of my head.
Action! I can’t believe I forgot that one!
There was a show that was on back in 2001(ish) called “The Others” that I would love to see again. I can’t remember which network it was on, but I remember it being a really creepy show that was fun to watch. Unfortunately I was working a job that switched me to nights and by the time I went back to days and could watch it had been cancelled.
UnSub, with David Soul… The Others… and The Lone Gunmen!
It’s never too sign to fight for any return of AD, even if it would be for one magical night only…
Oh, man, “The Others” rocked! And it was on NBC – just one of many shows that they’ve kicked too soon (see “Conviction” for a recent example… ugh). “Tru Calling” has some real potential on Fox, and I’m SO glad to know I’m not the only fan of “Kindred: The Embraced” – that was a fun one. My husband would really get a kick out of revisits to “Misfits of Science” and “Catwalk”
I know a lot of people “do stuff” on Saturday night, but quite often, I’m home and wouldn’t mind watching TV, except there’s nothing on that I want to watch. This sounds like a fun suggestion.
I sure would have liked to see “Reunion” play out for an entire season!
It’s the age of tivo and the DVR. There could be actual programming on Saturday night.
From the trailer for Miami Vice, the movie doesn’t look much like the first season of the TV show.
I’d love to see the Elvis biopic starring Kurt Russell. My 14 year old self didn’t know who Elvis was, but I sure had a crush on “The Computer Who Wore Tennis Shoes”.
The short-lived but devilishly compelling early-’90s series “2000 Malibu Road” never even aired in its entirety; it deserves a full revival. It had a great cast (Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Beals, Tuesday Knight), tongue-in-cheek quality and outrageous soap-spoofing savvy that prefigured “Desperate Housewives.”
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, no question, would keep me home every Saturday night (as if I’m not already). I’d probably hang out with Miami Vice too, as well as Alias, Laugh-In, Friends, The A-Team, Dawson’s Creek and Roswell. (Yep, I loved the WB back in the day.)
