Get yer Monday morning mashups!

Categories: Music

I finally found a cure for my unnatural addiction to Fergie’s "London Bridge": RuPaul’s saucy blog pointed me to producer Steve Lima’s series of wickedly unlikely mashups, and bada-ba-dada…I’m lovin ‘em. Admittedly, some of Lima’s musical marriages (Lisa Stansfield and Evelyn ”Champagne” King, for example) work better than others (like the jank Marvin Gaye-Talk Talk duet), but anyone who can successfully meld U2’s "Vertigo" to Patrick Hernandez’s "Born to Be Alive" deserves some PopWatch props. Also worth a listen: Annie Lennox’s "Little Bird" blended with George McCrae’s "Rock Your Baby," and an Ultra Nate-Nirvana mix that sounds a lot better than I expected. Listen for yourself, and share your favorites (if any) with the group.

    Slez,
It’s time to let go of jank. You rode it ’til the wheels fell off.

Good choices on the mashups, Slezak. I must admit though that I often like the titles of the mashups more than the actual tunes.
And yes… while I love the word jank, it’s beginning to remind me of that line in Mean Girls… “Stop trying to make ‘fetch’ happen. It’s not going to happen!”

Three of my favorite Mash-ups are:
    1. Sexy kiss machine: James Brown’s Sex Machine v. Princes’s Kiss
    2. Another one bites the Funk: Daft Punks De Funk v. Queen’s Another one Bites the Dust.
    3. It’s my Life: Talk Talk v. No Doubt
