Some awards are obsessed with success. Not Emmy, baby. Cancellation turns her head.
Look at this year’s nominees. The West Wing? Canceled. Malcolm in the Middle (for parents Jane Kaczmarek and Bryan Cranston)? Huff (for Oliver Platt and Blythe Danner)? Canceled. Arrested Development? Canceled, like, how many times, now? Six Feet Under? Yep, gone. Stockard Channing for Out of Practice? Buh-bye.
I suppose it lets you know that the Emmys aren’t a 100 percent commercially minded enterprise. Sure, the industry kills off deserving shows, but it guarantees them an Emmy afterlife. So while the "Lauren Graham Rule" may not have ended up spreading the nomination wealth to TV’s fringe champs (what, nothing but sound-mixing, costumes, and visual effects for Battlestar? Are you kidding, Emmy?), rest assured that the Academy still sets aside valuable nomination mojo to honor its fallen.

Just because a show was fine in its first year or two, and now is going off the air is no reason to show some Emmy love. Debra Messing over Lauren Graham, what, what were the Emmy voters thinking? Debra Messing is a horrid actress. And before people jump up and down saying this was not Graham’s best year (which I could argue given the rollercoaster she was on this year as a character is the wrong way to argue) she is still heads above the people nominated, the mother from Malcolm in the Middle? Oh my. Words escape me. Stockard Channing for a show that was panned from the start. Stultified. Nothing changed, they favored the old and the hearty in EVERY category–just look at Best Drama, the land of the lost — West Wing–over Lost. I am on board with the snubbing of DH, makes sense to me, what does not make sense is the Alfrie W. nom, excuse me, there was nothing funny about her. Where was Kristin Bell? Sandra Oh, best supporting? I am so baffled by this whole thing. A good way to clean up this mess, it is time to create a new category, Best Dramedy, will help the small and deserving shows get the Emmy Love they deserve.
YAY YAY YAY I don’t even care who else was nominated, I still didn’t have to see the day that Lauren Graham was nominated. Good job Emmy voters. If I have to hear about the “Lauren Graham” rule one more time I’ll puke. How about the “Sarah Michelle Gellar” rule? Or the “Alyson Hannigan” rule? Or “Keri Russell”? “Michelle Williams”??? These are all actresses who were robbed of nominations for their work on a WB show. Lauren Graham doesn’t come close. They at least got something right this time
thank god for lisa kudrow!
Debrah Messing isn’t a bad actress for starters. Also, the whole cancellation thing. I believe someone from EW said that Lisa Kudro should be nominated. But wait a second. Wasn’t that horrid show cancelled? Yeah, it was.
Anyways. I’m happy with nods. 24 was the most nominated. That’s all I care about.
the Emmys are just as clueless as the other Awards shows (Grammys, Oscars) – should we really be surprised?
i finally gave up on the Oscars and Emmys two years ago, and I haven’t watched the Grammys since I can’t even remember when…
guess its okay if lauren didn’t get a nom
she’s been better.but maybe a “sorry for ignoring you”nom would have been good.happy for the desparate snub, sad for the red head.
Are you kidding me? Kristin Bell should NOT be nominated. There are so many better actresses out there.
LOST was nominated. It just wasn’t for Best Drama. Boo freakidy hoo. I happen to love LOST and you don’t see me here crying over it.. or Lauren Graham.
And just because a show was cancelled, that doesn’t make the acting bad! You idiot.
They are t.v shows and this is an award show. Not everybody can nominated. It’s not that big of a deal. No need to cry about it.
No Jon Kransiski? Phff.
Hey, remember this?:

This is the wierdest bunch of nominees ever. I don’t think the people voting even watch TV. Forget all the “fringe” shows that the new rules were supposed to help, they even got the mainstream shows wrong! Two and a Half Men? None of the actors from Lost? I mean, waht in the world are they thinking? The Emmys are offically meaningless. I give up.
When did Showtime cancel HUFF?!?!
Kristen Bell SHOULD have been nominated. Just ask any tv critic.
While I am irritated about some of the omissions (Lauren Graham, John Krasinski, Jenna Fisher). I am really pleased with Arrested Development, Will Arnett, Gregory Itzin, Jean Smart, The Office, Scrubs and 24 being nominated. I am also over the moon that Desperate Housewives was shut out of the major categories. WooHoo!
Nico, didn’t Keri Russell win an emmy?…
If it’s possible, I think the Emmy noms are worse with the new voting system! I didn’t see that one coming. I mean, it’s the same old shows they always nominate, plus some other random ones thrown in.
I can’t believe Lost went from being Best Drama series to getting no nom at all! This season was just as amazingly well done as the first. Yet the same old, same old shows are still nominated. West Wing, Will & Grace, and Six Feet Under just need to DIE already!
I’m very surprised the only Desperate Housewives nom was to Alfre Woodard. I really didn’t see that one coming!
Here I was hoping against hope that underdogs like Lauren Graham and Battlestar Galactica would be recognized, when not even the people and shows I thought were shoe ins were nominated.
OMG, this system somehow made it WORSE. No Veronica Mars, No Lauren Graham, No LOST? No Hugh Laurie? Battlestar Gallitica, Tichina Arnold, Marcia Cross, Everwood, Jason Lee, Rainn Wilson, Jenna Miller or John Krasinski? No Edie Falco? WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?
Yes Stockard Channing for Out of Practice and KEvin James for King of Queens? This is THE WORST EMMY NOMINATIONS EVER. There are WHOLE CATEGORIES that I disagree with and the ONLY ONE THATS RIGHT IS THE BEST REALITY COMPETITION??? Thats Lame.
Shocked that the only Desperate Housewives star nominated is Alfre Woodard. If any of the “supporting” ladies shouldhave gotten the nod it should have been Nicollette Sheridan, Harriet Samson Harris or Kathryn Josten.
Rest in peace, dear GOB. It’s the final countdown. May there be bananas and Segways wherever you go.
Oh, forgot to add, Tinawina is completely right. Hollywood just made these already dubious award shows completely meaningless in one year. First the Oscars with the Reese and Crash win, and now the Emmy’s with the whole nominations. I mean, Two and a half Men is entertaining but Emmy worthy? If anyone is, it should be Holland Taylor yet she is missing from the list. Totally retarded this year.
realled bummed that Lauren Ambrose was not nominated…She definitely deserved to be there for her unforgetable portrayal of Claire Fisher…Also Mr.Eko (sorry cant spell his name) should have been nominated…Whats up with the comedy nods? I mean the guy from King of Queens come on!!!!!
“Huff” cancelled???? Whaaaaaaaaa? Say it isn’t so!
Gotta wonder what’s in the Kool-Aid they’re handing out at Emmy HQ when Scrubs gets only one nomination – for Best Comedy Series. Nothing else about it was worth nominating, but it was one of the best. Clearly there are still some kinks to be worked out when Kevin James gets the nod over Jason Bateman, Zach Braff and Jason Lee.
Except that ALL of those shows passed their height of their creativity LONG ago. To reward them now, and AGAIN, is totally ridiculous and unforgivable.
Huff is officially cancelled according to E… A fantastic show. What a shame.
The Emmy voters weren’t watching The WB or UPN this year.
I won’t be watching the Emmy this year.
Not shocked but still disappointed at the Emmys overlooking “Everybody Hates Chris.” What a great show, great cast. Would love to know what Tichina Arnold’s mom character would threaten to do to the clueless Emmy voters.
I WILL BOYCOTT the Emmy’s this year. I Love you Lost, Lauren, Edie, James and the many other overlooked wonderful actors and t.v. shows who were snubbed for “THE WEST WING” factor!! I am screaming in frustration!!! Those voters are CLUELESs. Oh, and I LOVE Michael Emerson a.k.a Lost’s Henry Gale. You deserved a supporting nod for sure!!
Jesus! Who does Lauren Graham have to sleep with to get an Emmy nod around here? No Lost, all the Desperate Housewives got snubbed (except the woefully underused Alfrie Woodard), House the show gets a nod but not House himself, no Prison Break, Sopranos get ONE nod, W&G and West Wing still get nods despite crappy final seasons, shows that get cancelled still get nods (Comeback, Commander-In-Chief). This is a travesty! What was the point of the change in voting if this is the best selection Emmy voters can come up with? That’s it. I’m done with the Emmys. They just piss me off.
To me it just seems like the Emmy’s are a popularity contest. The noms went to established stars regardless of the vehicle they were attached to. Maybe having the directors and producers voting is a bad idea – or maybe the powers that be just don’t like Lauren Graham – maybe she’s a hag to deal with behind the scenes so they snubbed her. It’s hard to say unless you are actually part of that world. I’m disappointed that Jason Lee was over-looked for “Earl”, but THRILLED that Jaime Pressely wasn’t!
(Sigh) This was pretty terrible:
I love, love, love Six Feet Under, but I would’ve rather seen its fantastic final season rewarded with a “Best Drama Series” nomination. (Nice to see my boy, Peter Krause, up for Best Actor, but…
Not nominating Hugh Laurie…or James Gandolfini…or Ian McShane…or Michael Chiklis for Best Actor in a Drama series is an ABSOLUTE joke…a completely disgusting joke! I mean, I like Christopher Meloni, but come on! And Martin Freaking Sheen?! He wasn’t even in half the episodes this season…(at least give his nom to Bradley Whitford)if Sheen actually wins, i’m gonna have to dropkick my TV.
No nominations for “Lost” is a shame too…even if you think it had a “down” year, you still can’t convince me that it’s not one of the Top 5, well-made, compelling dramas on TV.
Forest Whitaker WUZ robbed.
Comedy wasn’t that much better. Get Charlie Sheen (who i actually like), the entire cast of “Malcolm”, Julia-Louis, Stockard Channing and the over played and already honored Will and Gracers out…put in some “Office” people (you all know the ones, Krasinski, Wilson, Fischer), Zach Braff, Jason Bateman (who is actually pretty brilliant) Jason Lee…i can’t go on anymore…it’s depressing me typing the name of people that AREN’T nominated.
I feel like starting an All-Snubbed team…maybe once the Emmy people actually see in writing all the brilliant people they totally snubbed, they’ll be ashamed of themselves.
Oh well…at least they finally nominated Will Arnett.
So happy Desperate Housewives wasn’t nominated.
I am happy about 24 and the Grey’s noms.
People need to grow up though. It’s just an award show.
