What's the official song of summer '06?

If there’s anything more troubling to me than today’s date (July 5? Wha…? Where’d June go?) or the weather (zoinks! the ark just floated past PopWatch HQ!), it’s the fact that no single single has emerged as the official song of summer 2006. Stereogum weighed in last week on behalf of Justin Timberlake’s forthcoming "SexyBack" (a brief clip of it is kicking around cyberspace) while the New York Post has listed Nelly Furtado and Timbaland’s "Promiscuous" as the slight frontrunner over "SexyBack," Gnarls Barkley’s "Crazy" and Beyonce’s "Déjà Vu." (Hey, where Xtina at?) Fine choices all of ‘em, but to me, none quite has the slightly scary ubiquity that defines a song of summer.

I’ll admit that I probably deserve to be taken out back with a can of tuna for saying it, but perhaps Fergie’s "London Bridge" (which is linked via this site) has what it takes to, er, bridge the gap. Yes, like cheese in a can, Funyons, and the Taco Bell Gordita, it’s so deadly, undeniably wrong, and yet I want to consume more, more, more. Is it possible Fergie stuffed some crack in the bassline, because I’ve had "London Bridge" on repeat loop all morning, and whenever and I try to stop it, I get a case of the mean sweats. Somebody, please, knock some sense into me. Tell me I’m wrong, and name something — anything — other than "London Bridge" as the song of summer ‘06.

Fergie, stop it Paleeze. Leave it to someone else. Your 15 mins. will be up not soon enough.

Did the Shakira/Wyclef song come out too soon to qualify?

  • BB

Isn’t this the same as “Hollaback Girl” it’s such a rehash.

I have an interesting song choice. It is climbing the charts, but is not getting as much press as other choices.
How about “Do It To It” by Cherish. I cannot get the song out of my head and have it on repeat on my iPod. I play it so much my friends are getting a little annoyed with me.
I would also say SOS by Rihanna, but it peaked too early to be the summer song.
How about “Stars Are Blind” by Paris Hilton (I know it is wrong but the song is catchy) or “Ain’t No Other Man” by Christina Aguilera?

REALLY don’t like Deja Vu. “ain’t no other man” has really grown on me! Love “crazy”, but as “promiscuous” really makes me want to dance around my living room.
My other fave song this summer is The Fray’s “Over My Head”…just so darn catchy.

I am not liking the Fergie song – I can’t see it as the song of summer. I am going to have to stick with Gnarls Barkley followed by Nelly Furtado both were worthy enough to take up space on my iPod but that Xtina song may find it’s way there soon – quite catchy.
Umm did anyone else notice ont aht site that Sisqo has a new song out?

Michael, why not check out Lily Allen, currently riding the charts in the UK with her song Smile. It will chase everything else right out of your head. Her site is streaming it, but beware the ‘f-bombs’, its not the radio friendly version. http://www.lilyallenmusic.com/

Mmm, no. That song was not good, but perhaps it will grow on me. I thought we all decided weeks ago that “Promiscuous” would be the song of the summer. we are about halfway to Labor Day, and its numero uno – Hello?! Christina’s song is definitely runner up. I used to like “Crazy” but now it bothers me (peaked too soon?)…

“Heat of The Moment” by ASIA. The original band is back together & touring. The song was used in “The 40 Year Old Virgin”. 2006 is the new 1982!!!!

  • Paul Ketz

I really dislike both Promiscuous and Deja Vu. Of the songs listed, definitely Crazy or Ain’t No Other Man.

I gotta give the props to Nellie Furtado and will say that “Promiscuous Boy” takes the cake. She’s totally reinvented since her alt-rock-station-friendly first album, I’ve heard her new song frequently pumping through r&b stations in DC and Miami. That doesn’t mean the song’s taken over the country, but heavy airplay in two big cities has got to count for something.

Good call Slezak – I heard this last week and I love. I’m still stuck on Promiscuous though.

  • johnsm

Promiscuous is defintely the song of the summer. Hot beat, catchy chorus, sexy video. Nelly takes the cake. runner-up i gotta say is christina aguliera.

  • jon

I agree with what others have said about Nelly Furtado and “Promiscuous.” Um, it’s already the song of the summer so what’s with all this questioning. Unless, we’re talking about the song of next summer, in which case Fergie needs to delay her release for a few months…
Plus, you can’t release a song in July and call it a song of the summer. A true summer song has to come out around May, do okay at first and then BLOW UP BIG in June and July when people realize how wonderful it is and get played through August… Look at “Thong Song” by Sisquo or “Crazy in Love” by Beyonce (whose new song is def not a summer song). I remember liking “Crazy in Love” as early as April of 2003 and people saying ‘whateva’ and then that June when everyone was singing along, I was saying ‘told you so’ (however they were still saying ‘whateva’)

  • pooperscooper

NOT Fergie. I was all into the BEP until they came out with that trash “My Humps”. Catchy, but dear god those lyrics! I might as well listen to a Barnie song.
I like Nelly and Gnarls for the songs of the summer. Rhianna too soon, Gnarls not mainstream enough sounding to get tons of airplay.
I prefer “Only Time Will Tell” from ASIA.

  • jon

Oh, forgot to add, if Nelly’s “Promiscuous” is the official song of the summer, can “Maneater” be named the official unofficial song of the summer as it is on FIRE!

  • johnathan

Deja vu??? That song is weak, plus I’ve hardly heard it on the radio every two seconds. Somebody must have paid the NY Post to slip that one in there.

  • RonMwangaguhunga

I said here several weeks ago that it would be Gnarlz and I’m not backing down. That song is guaranteed to put a little wiggle in your tush.

  • nathan

My goodness, I still can’t get over how much that chick sucks, don’t worry Peas, the rest of you still blow as well.

  • tara

    HAHAHA!!
Thanks for the laugh, Geno! I’m with you all the way about Asia. That song is great.
I just got a flyer saying the Candlebox will be in my town on July 12. Who knew they were still around!
    Love it!

  • cj

O MY DAMN it’s a great cross btwn missy and gwen stefani

  • Ed

This song ROCKS! I give this song the first GAY stamp of approval! I can see the “girls” leaving the bar stools and cosmos for this one.
Sleazak, I heard the remix version of Deja Vu at the gay club the other day and it was hot hot hot; while Xtina came on with her original version and everyone went back to the bar : (
Anyone heard from Janet lately? I didn’t think so either.
    Ed

  • Liza

Didn’t we have this discussion a few weeks ago?
I’ll stick with my original choice: Promiscuous

  • marley

    Um… that’s the worst song.
I’d rather hear her sing the actual kiddie song London Bridge. Tha would be better than this.
Oh, Fergie… what happened to you? You were so cute on Kids Inc., with your big crinoline skirt and giant button belt.

  • Geneva Hilton

Maneater is the Hollaback song of the summer. Check it out, it’s freaking amazing. Hands down the best thing this year.

  • Vel

Ah yeah, I think that song is awful. It’s interesting how the Black Eyed Peas found commercial successs with the addition of Fergie. B.E.P used to be concious hip hop, know they’re straight up bubble gum rap. They are the consumate cross over artists. Fergie is beautiful and she can shake and shimy with the likes of Beyonce and Ciara, however, like them, her vocal chops aren’t tearing any mountains down. Bull-e-dat!!

  • Cliff

    That sounds like Gemini’s Twin.

  • Theo

Timberlake and Fergie do not impress.
It’s still Gnarls by a long, LONG way.
If you think otherwise, I think you’re crazy.

  • Fatima

I downloaded that song from the site the day it was put up, listened to it once, and then quickly deleted it in hopes I’d never have to hear it again. Its a million times worse than anything post Fergie Black Eyed Peas put out and thats saying a ton.
the summer belongs to gnarls, nelly f, and beyonce. thank you.

  • Christina

That’s some serious crap. I guess people like Fergie think that their only way to score a hit is to be as childish as they can be.
Nelly Furtado has won the “song of the summer” title. Surprising since Beyonce and Christina both have new singles out.Their singles just aren’t song of the summer worthy
