How would you say good-bye to the WB?

Categories: Television

104113__buffy_lParting is going to be such sweet, sweet sorrow when the WB signs off permanently on Sunday, Sept. 17, with a five-hour programming block (starting at 5 p.m. EDT) that will be comprised of the pilots for Felicity, Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (two hours), and Dawson’s Creek, plus other promos and highlight clips. Should be riveting stuff, but if I were in charge of programming the net’s three final primetime hours (from 7-10 p.m.), I’d focus on some moments of fearless innovation that, in its best moments, separated the WB from its older, crustier competitors.

7 p.m. Dawson’s Creek pilot
8 p.m. Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical episode, "Once More, With Feeling"
9 p.m. The Felicity "Twilight Zone" episode, "Help for the Lovelorn"

There’s my dream lineup — well, second behind the all-Felicity-all-the-time network — now what would you want to see in the WB’s final three hours? (Feel free to use EW’s countdown of the network’s 11 most memorable moments for inspiration).

I loved Once More with Feeling, but I think that was a UPN hosted edpisode. Another good one (that I think might have actually been on the WB) was “Hush.” Brilliant episode!! I’d love to see that one again.

The musical episode of Buffy – “Once More with Feeling” was from season 6 of Buffy – when it aired on UPN – NOT the WB.
    Get a clue…

  • Will

The Everwood pilot belongs on the list. I’m not surprised it isn’t there, since the WB’s support for the show waned considerably after its first promotional push back in the fall of 2002.
This episode launched an intelligent, nuanced, thoughtful program — a series that breathed new life into the family drama genre and featured the best TV acting and writing of its day.

Vicki, Good catch…this is what I get for blogging with a cold, but since the Buffy egg was hatched beneath The WB’s downy feathers, I’d still love to see it paired with Felicity’s awesome black-and-white hour.

For me, the most chill-inducing moment in The WB’s history is the second season episode of Smallville, called “Rosetta,” in which Clark (Tom Welling) meets Dr. Swann (Christopher Reeve) and learns about his Kryptonian heritage (with John Williams’ iconic score subtly playing in the background). This Supermantle-passing brought tears to my eyes (and because the episode predated Superman Returns by four years, trumps all the current film’s silly homages to Superman: The Movie) and sold me on the whole concept of Smallville.

Can’t Angel EVER get some respect? How about with “Thank You”? Seeing Cordy, Spike, Illyria/Fred, Wes, Angel, Gunn, and the Host one last time would send the WB off in style.

  • Tino

Buffy wasn’t that good of a show. It was schlocky and flat-out geeky. I’m tired of EW bringing this show up every friggin’ chance they get. Get over it. An average show was on, and now it’s not. Go put on Deadwood.

  • Christopher

I’d prefer HUSH, about the Gentlemen, for Buffy Or Becoming 1 & 2.
Darth, the reason WB is going away is because UPN and WB are merging, so ONCE MORE WITH FEELING would be better represented on UPN’s going away party… Good catch… although there’s no need to be so nasty!

  • Kaybar

Tino, I admire your courage in saying that Buffy was not a good show. Of course, you’re incredibly, horrendously, unbelievably WRONG! but, whatever. The only TV show for which I have ever bought complete seasons is “Twin Peaks”. “Buffy” would be the second.

  • Miles

of course, if ONCE MORE with FEELING had aired on the WB i’d be all for it… but it was actually in the UPN season 6. How about them airing HUSH which was their the WB only Emmy nomination for writing EVER!

  • Jakeem

I would do it the other way around with the series finales for “Felicity,” “Dawson’s Creek” and “Angel.” And I would air the “Innocence” episode from Season 2 of “Buffy.” It was listed No. 1 among creator Joss Whedon’s ten favorite episodes in a 2003 USA Today piece. It’s the show in which Buffy has sex with Angel for the first time, leading to unforeseen problems.

  • Middento

Wait, is the Buffy episode, episode #1 or the pilot — meaning that we may finally see who Alyson Hannigan replaced?

  • jessie

Woah, Tino. you’re wrong. I think that Once More, With Feeling was one of the best hours of television ever produced.
“Bunnies! Bunnies, it must be bunniieees! Or maybe midgets.”
    Incredible.

  • finn

How about we have a reunion of the stars of these shows.
I’d love to see a cage match with Shannen Doherty and Rose McGowan, would love to see Michelle Williams slap some sense into Katie Holmes, and would love to see Tangi Miller do something other than direct to video releases. “Get her the jello, or I’ll shoot!”

  • aramis

All Buffy miniathon would be a fitting end to a network that had it’s hits and misses, Buffy being the former.
However, the musical episode is a triumph of the Frog’s competitor UPN as it was the network that aired the Buffyverse’s musical venture as well as it’s other pivotal episodes, like Willow’s bedroom soirees and Spike going NOTblonde for an episode or two.
But lest we forget that the WB did sort of make things right by pledging allegiance to those quirky characters of Stars Hollow. While I will never forgive the network for letting Buffy and Angel slip through their fingers, I will commend them for staying true to Gilmore Girls. And the fact that the show isn’t going to be part of the farewell for WB’s signoff is clue enough that the network was often plagued by cluelessness.
    Fare thee well, WB.

  • steve

someone above said they want to see who alyson hannigan replaced…if you wanna check it out you can watch the entire original pilot at youtube.com…its very strange watching someone else in the role as willow and while this is very unfair to say i think alyson hannigan was a much better actor

  • Joe C

I would DEFINITELY like to see a Buffy marathon, as well as Gilmore Girls; those two shows rocked! Improving on an idea someone else mentioned, how about a steel cage match between Shannen Doherty and Aylissa Mylano?Lol, those were the two who couldn’t get along….
And lol, Michael, ya got a cold? Chicken soup, dude.

  • Martin

Funny how The WB won’t air the 7th Heaven Pilot – isn’t that show its rating darling? Me, I’d air the Buffy Pilot or maybe the “Becoming” episodes or “Buffy vs. Dracula,” the DC, Roswell, Felicity and Charmed pilots, and maybe the Gilmore Girls pilot, too. But definitely Buffy and Dawson’s, two shows who really put the network on my radar, especially the Slayer.

  • Darth Nihilus

Just pointing out the error, as for the “nastiness” of saying get a clue, consider how EW trashes celebrities and their works on a regular basis – far nastier.

  • mike

I’ve been DVRing Buffy reruns. Along with Hush, my favorite, they would have to include the first three season finales. The Scooby gang battling the master, evil Angel and the evil mayor and Faith. I don’t remember the actor who played the mayor, but to play a prim politician who is about to become a 50ft monster and rule the world was a neat trick.

  • Anthony W.

The Twilight Zone Felicity was awesome, it’d be great if they showed that.
I think tvguide.com said they’re not airing anything that’s living on on CW. If I had to name shows they should re-air, if they added another night:
Popular, Everwood, Jack & Bobby, and some comedies, like Jamie Foxx and Zoe(…).
I know I’m probably dreaming silly dreams, but I wish UPN would do this. I’ll have to try and write Dawn, like I’m important or something. They should show:
Moesha, The Parkers, One on One, and Platinum and Kevin Hill.

  • froogle

they should thank their viewers and promote their dvds at the same time…

  • Joe Kuhlmann

Dream big-the musical episode originally aired on UPN.

  • nancy

I gotta go with The Jamie Foxx show. I’d say repeats of Buffy but other people have that covered. Jamie and Garcelle Beauvais, who played his on-again, off-again lover, Fancy, had so much chemistry they almost set my tv screen on fire! Plus, it was a funny show.

  • newbie

The Tv Guide channel listed for “What I Like About YOu”=Conclusion–Val gets her hand stuck in the toilet. I felt that that was an appropos series and channel finale.
Actually, I would like a 48 hour non-stop marathon of all of the great Warner Brothers cartoons, ending with the return of Michigan J. Frog to all of his classic, pre-”Dubba Dubba” splendor.
While we’re at it, please tell me that someone is plotting a massive media barrage to tell us what in the hell CW stands for, because I can’t hear it without wanting to bust into an achy-breaky line dance. Paging Mr. Leghorn?

  • brad

while i agree with the shows that are getting repeat love, i would also like to see some shows that hardly get mentioned: savannah and popular! if upn did this, they should definitely show the parkers, kevin hill, and platinum.

  • ————–

all buffy all the time. becoming, innocence, angel, ted, something blue, hush, the gift, (then if they are up for the upn era) bargaining 1 & 2, once more with feeling, smashed… absolutely NOBODY shows reruns in my area since FX stopped, which is a large market. ridiculous!

  • Ron Mwangaguhunga

A Yule Log … a great, big Yule Log ..

  • saynt96

Of course number one would be Buffy in the “Hush” episode, Angel next, and Dawson’s Creek. I haven’t loved shows like those since.

  • Alicia

I have fond memories of Popular, but Buffy rules the WB.
