Courtesy of Movie City News comes this link to a download of Day of the Fight, the seldom-seen first film by Stanley Kubrick. Shot by the 21-year-old filmmaker in 1950, the 16-minute documentary traces a day in the life of boxer Walter Cartier, culminating in his bout with Bobby James. There’s little of the chilly stylistic flourishes familiar from the director’s mature work, but the short’s subject — how a man psyches himself into readiness for violent behavior — would echo through Kubrick’s career, from Spartacus to Dr. Strangelove to Clockwork Orange to Full Metal Jacket. Check it out.
