Who DOESN'T deserve an Emmy nomination?

Tags:

154154__thatcher02_lOkay, you already know I’m dangerously preoccupied with all things Emmy. But based on your comments on the message boards over the last few weeks, I suspect a lot of you are too. So here’s the thing: With all our back-and-forth about which actors (and series) deserve to break through the all-too-predictable nomination clutter, we’ve mostly skipped over the flip-side of this debate: Which Emmy darlings should get a big fat plate of nothing come July 6?

I’m hoping the snubfest begins with Teri Hatcher (pictured), who was indisputably the weakest link in a weak sophomore season of Desperate Housewives (even if it was largely the fault of the show’s writers). In fact, no disrespect to the talented Felicity Huffman, but based on the entire year, I’d argue that Emmy would only deserve a spanking if Housewives‘ Eva Longoria and/or Marcia Cross didn’t get their names called in the Best Actress in a Comedy category next month. (This of course, would hopefully clear the way for Valerie Cherish Lisa Kudrow to utter these delightful words.)

On the drama side of the equation, I’d argue Patrick Dempsey’s fine performance on Grey’s Anatomy wasn’t really challenging enough to earn Emmy stripes. And in the Drama Series category, was The West Wing‘s final season really good enough to leave the awesome Battlestar Galactica off the list? I don’t think so!

Now it’s your turn, PopWatchers? Who doesn’t deserve an Emmy nomination this year? Let your bile flow along with the morning caffeine!

I agree that Desperate Housewives may have had some bad moments in the season but All throughout Marcia Cross stod out especially in the beginning and the end. I really hope she is nominated and wins. She is awesome and comedy and drama!

West Wing definitely is worthy of an Emmy nomination for its final season; not because of it being its final season, but because the show mattered again. It would have been even better had John Spencer not died halfway through shooting. I am not saying WW should win, but it most definitely is worthy of a nomination.

No cast members from “Lost” (but if we absolutely HAD to include on person let it be Mr. Eko…and yes, i’m too darn lazy to look up how to spell his real name…sorry)
No cast members from Will & Grace…yes, it was the last season, but they already each have an Emmy, and I don’t believe any of them were in the top of five of their respective categories.
No Boston Legal in Drama categories…especially Spader for Best Actor…i LOVE the guy, but Ian McShane/Hugh Laurie/Gandolfini are more deserving in this category.
No Tony Shalhoub…he delivers, but the show is tired.

Ceballos, I’m gonna have to disagree with you about “Lost.” I thought Jorge Garcia had a good year…but that’s beside the point.
I’m hoping that Eva Longoria misses the cut every year. Maybe my approach doesn’t follow “the rules,” but I can’t separate her publicity-hungry, shallow, “I’m-soooo-hot” public persona when I see her on TV. Marcia Cross, on the other hand, deserves an Emmy right now. Right. NOW.
No one from “The Sopranos” needs one this year. Ditto Shatner & Spader.

Repeat after me: No Will or Grace

Here’s the deal people, as much as I love the West Wing and would follow it to the CW and back again Ms. Janney really doesn’t deserve the award with so much talent out there.
Having said that though, if Kelly Bishop or Lauren Graham are robbed again this year I will pull a full out Linda Blair and record it for YouTube. That is a promise!

The West Wing absolutely deserves to be nominated for Best Drama. How many shows on TV go through a creative slump for one or two seasons, and then come back with two of the strongest seasons ever? This is especially so for the last season. The writers took a risk focusing an entire season almost exclusively on one plot line, but they succeeded with a riveting and thought-provoking portrayal of the election and, gasp, candidates we could root for (both Democract AND Republican). It was intertwined perfectly with the waning days of the Bartlet Administration to create a wonderful ending to The West Wing. I hope we hear The West Wing’s name called out come nomination night!

No to Patricia Arquette, no to Jennifer Garner and no no no to any of the Will and Grace family. And I have to agree, Teri had really bad writing to deal with this year but sympathy doesn’t earn a vote so out she goes.

  • James

I can’t disagree with you more, I think that Teri Hatcher definitely deserves an Emmy nomination. She was still vulnerable and charming.

  • Simeon

Slezak, I love how you love Valerie Cherish! Are we the only ones?
That being said, did Doris Roberts do anything this year? Cuz I don’t need to see her at the Emmys ever again.

  • Graham

    No to Teri Hatcher!
Yes to Marcia Cross who should have been recognized before but this past season of DHos was for her to shine. Jennifer Garner deserves a drama Emmy for her body of work on Alias. Victor Garber needs a supporting Emmy pronto!
Sandra Oh should be a shoo in for her Emmy Stat! Ellen Pompeo should be snubbed until she expands her character enough to make her less of a wet blanket!
Kristen Bell should be nominated and a win would be sweet for all those who believe that Buffy was robbed during it’s run.
Here’s to hoping the new system works!

I still don’t buy putting Desperate Housewives in the Comedy category, even when it was on top of its game. But for Emmys, I’d go with Marcia Cross and Eva Longoria, and leave Felicity and Teri off this year. I’d also leave off W &G, Eric McCormack and Sean Hayes, keep Debra Messing (but won’t feel too bad if she’s snubbed) and ditch Megan Mulally.
Dave nailed my opinions on the West Wing perfectly; still, I’d leave Alison Janney off since she didn’t have as much to do this year. Also, there’s no reason to nominate Stockard Channing either (which they always do even though she’s hardly on).

  • Howard

I should have said that there’d be more. Regarding Lisa Kudrow being nominated for The Comeback: I DON’T need to see THAT! I gave that show two attempts, and the only thing that was less funny than that drek was Lucky Louie, which is wasting a perfectly good half hour after Entourage (which, BTW should be up for Best Comedy).

  • Matt

“The West Wing” certainly deserves a nomination this year, and hopefully some of the men in the supporting actor category also get nominated (Alan Alda, Richard Schiff, Jimmy Smits, John Spencer, Bradley Whitford).
As for “Will & Grace”, I think Megan Mullally is the only one that without question deserves a nomination. She was fantastic this year. The others all deserve consideration (especially McCormack and Messing), but I would not be heartbroken if they were not nominated.
I just want to hear the proper recognition for “The Office,” “Scrubs,” and “The West Wing.” Then I will satisfied.

  • Ren

I think that Eva Longoria really carried Desperate Housewives this year and deserves at the very least an Emmy nomination. You can’t hold the character she plays against her – that is just plain silly.
