Slezak has some Emmy advice

Categories: Emmys

92334__gilmore_lI’ve got a mean case of Emmy fever, and I don’t need no stinkin’ cure. Quite the opposite, in fact, I plan to think about the Emmys every seven seconds right up until nominations are announced on July 6.  One website that’s seriously enabling me is Emmy Watch 2006, from GoldDerby’s forums moderator Robert Licuria. He’s listed the top 15 contenders in each of the major categories, including the five current frontrunners, and you might be surprised to see that he’s listed typical Emmy favorites like Michael Chiklis, Allison Janney, Eric McCormack, and Marcia Cross as potential snubs for 2006.

Of course, given the fact that Emmy has tweaked its nominating procedure this year, Licuria contends you should be more surprised if there’s not a shakeup in the usual suspects. "To put it simply," he says, "if Lisa Kudrow and/or especially Lauren Graham (pictured) make it into the top 5 of this very competitive [Best Actress in a Comedy] category, then the new system works. If we get lots of Housewives and a pot-seller, then the system has not been effective enough. Simple really. The new system is being dubbed the ‘Lauren Graham System,’ and that’s for a reason. For too long now Ms. Graham has missed out, been snubbed and ignored, and it’s time to end this cycle of fan torture. And I think that after years of snubbery, ATAS has decided to shake things up in the hope that contenders like. Ms Graham have a shot. Call it the Buffy Amendment."

Still, my colleague Nicholas Fonseca, who was kind enough to write a letter of advocacy to the folks at Emmy, is gonna have some mixed feelinsg if Licuria proves to be an astute handicapper. His pep talk on behalf of My Name Is Earl’s Jason Lee, Grey’s Anatomy’s T.R. Knight, and The Office seems to have worked, but EmmyWatch doesn’t rank Forest Whitaker (The Shield), Leisha Hailey (The L Word), or Kate Walsh (Grey’s Anatomy) in the top 15 of their respective categories. Phooey! Ah well, at least Aunt Sassy isn’t down for the count yet, because as everyone knows, "People like Valerie Cherish, and they don’t want to see her brutalized."

I’d be interesting to see if this new system works. Two things though:
1.)Forest Whitaker NEEDS to be nominated for his work on “The Shield” this year. He was magnetic, hateable/sympathetic, all at once.
2.) Hopefully this will finally be the year of Lauren Graham. She’s always been an outstanding actress in her portrayal of Lorelai…but she also happens to be absolutely stunningly beautiful…I mean look at the accompanying picture to this article!

Kudos to Nicholas Fonseca for mentioning Leisha Hailey in his picks for Emmy nominations. Though I am not lucky enough to be able to afford Showtime (I am a graduate student, after all), I have marveled at Leisha’s ability for comic timing and heartfelt emotional response to the rather ridiculously depressing and thin story lines she has had to deal with in the first two seasons of The L Word (I am currently awaiting Season 3’s arrival on DVD so that I can weep in private over the loss of the beloved Dana). Though I, too, have resigned myself to the fact that Leisha probably won’t get nominated (no Emmy voters watch a TV show about lesbians now that S&TC is over anyway), it still warms my heart to see her name mentioned in print.
And Slezak, it would be a CRIME if Lauren Graham is not nominated this year and almost a national disaster if she doesn’t win. And I don’t even watch Gilmore Girls, so that excuse by Emmy faithfuls (that not enough people catch GG every week) no longer flies. Good luck Ms. Graham and may the first recipient of the “Buffy-Is-Snubbed-No-Longer” award prevail.

michael, the site isn’t working for me… how am I ever going to get my emmy fix in? And why doesn’t EW have their top 10-15 pics up yet… enough 80s videos, it’s time to get to work…

  • Maria

In my opinion there are five people who deserve Emmy’s and I will pitch a big, fat, lay down in the floor at Target kicking and screaming fit if at least a few of them don’t get one. Here is my list:
    Jean Smart – 24
    Gregory Itzin – 24
    Lauren Graham – GG
    Jenna Fischer – The Office
    John Krasinski – The Office

  • Thataboy

I hope Lisa Kudrow is nominated and wins, because:
    1. It would be great vindication for the underrated show, and
    2. It would be greater for her to get up there and say “Well… I got it!”
    I’d piddle.

  • Sarah

It’s great that this is called the “Buffy Amendement” but where was it when Buffy was actually on the air? I just watched “The Body” again this weekend. How on earth SMG didn’t get a nomination for it, I’ll never understand. The Emmys need new blood. I’d like to see Wentworth Miller get a nomination, that would make my day.

  • Brenna

    Link isn’t working!!!!!

  • Ed

Oh my god Slezak you’re too cool!
I love Aunt Sassy! I still cringe each time Entourage is over and see that stupid Lucky Louie show. I torture myself thinking that The Comeback should have debuted. Can you image with everything that has happened in the last year Valerie saying that she gets her hair done by Madonna’s stylist? Or getting her own website with a community board or her own record contract? Man, that show could have gone a zillion places. Why isn’t LOGO picking this one up!

  • johnathan

hahahaha, thataboy, it would make my LIFE if Valerie Cher– uhh, I mean Lisa Kudrow said that when she won her Emmy.

  • Vance

Lauren Graham, TR Knight, Gregory Smith, Kristen Bell and John Krasinski. One or all of them had BETTER BE NOMINATED.

  • finn

Hey, I’m all for Lauren Graham getting an Emmy nod as much as the next person, but if Marcia Cross is snubbed, then this system doesn’t work, either. She’s the only one of the Housewives I’d consider for an Emmy, and in my book, she’s the one to beat this year.

  • mike

Lauren Graham, Lauren Graham, Lauren Graham. Enough said.
Except shame on the Emmys for ignoring the WB until now. I second Sarah for the lateness of the Buffy Amendment. I recently DVR’ed Hush. I’ll put that up against any winning drama episode. Is it too much to ask for them to honor Everwood?

  • Slezak

Gah! Sorry guys, the Emmy Watch site looks like it’s down right now.

  • Miles

I have complete faith that the Emmy Committee, will find a way to completely mess this new system up, and nominate the same crap they always do. I will do what I always do in such cases… From the day of the announcement of nominations till the day of the awards, I watch the DVD’s of shows that were ignored in the past… starting with Season one of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Gilmore Girls, Everwood. You see, there’s a good cure for an Emmy Fever Mr. Slezlack, it’s called good television.

  • Miles

after reading that goldenderby thing, I think that guy is just grabbing names out of a hat. However, I like some of his picks… and if any of his Will and Grace predictions are right, then I will definetely never watch the emmmy’s again… how that terrible show (loved it once upon a time) can keep getting nominations is beyond me.

  • augie braun

Love Lauren Graham. She deserves an Emmy, but unfortunately not for her on this season of Gilmore Girls. It was a dreary year and poor Lorelai was stuck with a gawd-awful storyline. If not nominated this year, it’s because Amy Sherman Palladino let her down.

  • Elyse

I love that girl in Bad Santa. That movie was HILARIOUS!….NO, i dont want no sandwiches….what is it with you and making f’ing sandwiches?!?!

  • dude

Yeah… On Licuria’s predictions… WHERE IS VERONICA MARS?!?!

  • uyla

Love the Valerie Cherish audio clip!

  • Slezak

hey folks, the Emmy Watch site is back up and running.

  • Becca

It really is a tragedy that Lauren Graham hasn’t been nominated for an Emmy. She, at her worst, and think it is fair to say this was the worst season of Gilmore Girls, is still heads and shoulders above any of the Housewives. Can you imagine how much better Housewives would be if Lauren was on that show? I mean, think about it!

  • cj

even if she really pissed me of lauren needs to get her emmy nomination she is so much better than any of those housewives, maybe with the exception of the red head this season.good ridance amy palladino don’t let the door knob hit you were the good lord split ya

  • laura

Lauren Graham has my vote …
    Lauren Graham for an EMMY!!!
    Si se puede !!!
    laura

  • blah

Let’s put it this way, if Lauren Graham was nominated, I’d watch the Emmys for the first time…

  • Jenni

Lauren Graham should get a nomination. Even if the writers on Gilmore Girls are slowly losing their touch, she does not. She carries that show for crying out loud.

  • Rikka

Here’s my pick for Best Actress in a comedy series:
    1) Lauren Graham
    2) Marica Cross
    3) Lisa Kudrow
    4) Mary Louise Parker
    5) Felicity Huffman or Julia Lewis Dreyfus
Based on quality alone, I’d say the battle is between Lauren Graham and Marcia Cross. Obviously, Lauren Graham has soooooooooo many things going against her (1. She’s on the WB. 2. The fact that her show is both a drama and a comedy 3. She’s on the WB)

  • Jen

Rikka, I agree with you. Marcia Cross and Lauren Graham are two of the best actresses on Television. If neither of them are nominated, then this award show should just be canned.
Marcia Cross is so underrated. Felicity Huffman and Teri Hatcher get so much attention, but Marcia Cross owned Wisteria Lane this season!!

  • Nico

Is everyone on here smoking something that I’m not? I’ve tried to watch Gilmore Girls a dozen or so times and Lauren Graham is one of the worst actresses I’ve ever seen on TV. To compare that show and her acting to anything on Buffy is a crime against humanity. Her ability to deliver every line with the gusto and emotion of a dead whale makes me cringe!! I can’t watch 5 minutes without laughing. I don’t know if it’s the writing or (probably) the delivery but to someone who isn’t a die-hard fan of the show, it seriously sounds like she is reading her lines cold, as fast as she can from a teleprompter. Good acting that is DEFINITELY not. I am waiting for the day that show finally ends so I don’t have to keep hearing about her possible Emmy nomination. IF that does happen I will already be upset that other more talented actresses weren’t nominated instead with more challenging work and that Sarah Michelle Gellar or Alyson Hannigan weren’t nominated during the Buffy days over this hack.
Just my opinion, take it or leave it but I just have tried so hard to see the appeal and there is none for me. I can’t take an actress seriously that puts no emotion or inflection into her dialogue. When has that ever been considered good?? Maybe on a soap opera but not for the Emmys.

  • Peggy

It’s total BS that “Desperate Housewives” gets to enter in the comedy catagory. Hopefully, with the terrible writing and inane plots this season, the show will get snubbed. The show was a one season “hit” at best. If the Emmy voters have a true appreciation for brilliant comedic writing & acting, “The Comeback” & “The Office” will get their well deserved nominations. Since Lisa Kudrow just signed a development deal with NBC, MAYBE they’ll take a shot at “The Comeback”?

  • Nicole

It’s all about Gilmore and The Office this year – can’t wait to see Lauren Graham, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Rainn Wilson, and Mary Louise Parker (Weeds) on the list of nominees.
