Spare me the whole ‘Taking Spider-Man in a new direction” garbage because we both know its crap. Joe did not revel Spider-Man’s identity for the sake of the story or the character, he reveled it for shock value and shock value only. You can see that in how lazy the story was written and how badly it was staged. Peter’s reasoning for coming out made no sense what so ever and it goes against everything the character stood and fought for because he always put the lives of his family first and he would never betray them for the loyalty of a friend or the politics of the public. For Peter to do what he did was completely out of character for him because he of all people would have known better to do such a stupid thing.
Its funny to read the dumb arguments some fans make ( if you can call them fans) that what Peter did was in character because of the motto “ With Great Power Comes great Responsibility” but anybody with half a brain would know that if you are one of the most hated super heroes around by bad guys and the public( He was even more hated than the mutants in the marvel universe at one point, so much so that they all thought that he was a mutant and sent X factor after him). Your first and foremost responsibility is to protect yourself and your family. Peter knows this very well with the people he had loss in his life and for him to play Russian roulette with their lives now (especially with him being a public school teacher of all things) is not only out of character but it shows that Marvel did not think this though at all and only did this for shock value.
Now I know that some of you will try to insult me with the dumb argument that I’m a crybaby and I have no life and I don’t embrace change, etc, etc ( The same Zombie mentality that you find in cults or The Republican Party.) but let me tell you something, I have being collecting comics for almost 25 fives years and Spider-Man had always had a special place in my heart and what Marvel did to him is the equivalent of taking Babe Ruth to the middle of Yankee stadium and blowing his brains out right in front of his fans.
It’s a disgrace and everybody who had a hand in it (including the writers) should be ashamed of themselves.

Just to clarify, The Flash (easily number 4 or 5 in terms of hero popularity in DC, depending on your opinion of Green Lantern) was open and public for most of his super-hero life. Until issue 200, most of Central City knew his identity as Wally West. Also, several lower-string heroes like The Elongated Man (Ralph Dibney) were out in the public. Most of them do it because they just want the public not to be afraid of them.
Oh, and like Green Lantern, there has been more than one Flash. The one in question was the third, who recently was written out of the comic (not permantly... long story) to be apparently replaced by the first Flash (Jay Garrick).

Marvel just spit in the face of every comic book fan with what they did with Spider-Man. It goes against everything Spider-Man had stood for and i hope if there is a God in heaven that there is justice for the fans for what they did to him.

This is the worst idea to grace comcidom since Superman Red/Superman Blue. Will it attract new readers? Maybe....but at the cost of alot of long-time fans.
First, Marvel does "Sins Past", then "The Other", then that terrible "Iron Spidey" suit, now this crapola.
Great job, Marvel. Alienate those fans for news coverage!!
Idiots.

I'm definitely not a regular Spider-Man reader, but I keep up with the general stuff. This sounds like a great turn to take in the Spider-Man storyline, conceivably refreshing a 40-year-old character in a simple way. Jameson's reaction would be priceless, and the continuing story of Parker trying to protect May and MJ certainly yields a lot of potential.

Scott, you miss the point. "Civil War" stems from an incident which is not unlike the controversy the real world had not too long ago of innocents being injured or even killed while police were chasing suspects.
The New Warriors, a team of heroes reduced to being the subject of a reality TV series (think "Real World" for super-heroes), track down and throw down with a number of super-powered fugitives that are out of their league. They decide to take the risk not because of imminent danger, not because no one else can do it, but for the stupid-ass reason that capturing these ne'r-do-wells would be a huge ratings boost. In the ensuing fight, Nitro is up against the wall and does what he does best...he blows up. Big. Huge! And he does it in front of an elementary school. At least 600 people are killed, most of them children.
The public outcry is massive...the demand is that all super-heroes be registered so as to be held responsible for their actions. Some argue that heroes revealing their identities is the right thing to do. Some have already done so in the past (i.e. the Fantastic Four, Captain America). Others feel doing so not only takes away their right to privacy, but also puts loved ones at risk of attack by villains who wouldn't think twice about offing Aunt May just to hurt Spider-Man.
Peter Parker faces a terrible choice. If he refuses to take off his mask, he'll be a fugitive and would have to abandon his wife and aunt, as they could be charged with aiding and abetting if they helped him. But if he does, what happens next? The not knowing is the worst part.
So he chooses the latter, remembering that "with great power comes great responsibility." And, if nothing else, the panel showing his old boss, J. Jonah Jameson, fainting from shock is priceless.
"Nuff said."
