I was skeptical at first, too. But reportedly, Depp had to do a voice test and be approved by Sondheim himself first. Sondheim had the same qualms as a lot of us. Depp has a great rock voice, but that’s a far cry from the operatic tone of Sweeney Todd. However, as Depp got the role, it means that Sondheim must have approved him. With the approval of the composer, I know that I’m feeling a lot better.
