Attend the film of 'Sweeney Todd'...

Its lead is Depp, its director odd.
Tim Burton will adapt the play
So recently snubbed at the Tonys.
Hooray!

A movie
Of ‘Sweeney Todd’
Will soon be coming to Fleet Street.

But can John-ny sing, people
Or will critics groan?
Can you please
Tell me if he’s
A baritone?

(To the tune of "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd")

I am so used to seeing big barrel-chested men play this role…the part is SO LOW. But Johnny Depp can definitely play the creepy dark side of the role. I look forward to seeing it!

Since the show is almost all singing, Sweeney really does need to have a gorgeously low baritone voice for it to work – like Len Cariou, who originated the role on Broadway. Man, I really hope Johhny CAN sing, because as an actor I know he’ll be awesome, but if he really can’t sing then it will suck. Marlon Brando in “Guys and Dolls”, anyone?

Ok, I’m one of the insane Depp fans, so any news of a new film makes me happy. However, I’m also a crazed Sweeney Todd fan.
Do we know if this is actually going to be a filmed version of the Sondheim musical. Seems to me there’s a possibility Burton is planning a movie about Sweeney Todd without music. Anyone?

  • Rob

Yes, Faith, it’s the Sondheim musical. It was reported in Playbill.com today.

Isn’t Depp a little young to play Sweeney? I guess they can age him up a lot, but still. I wonder who else will be cast..

AWESOME!! I read about this yesterday and I am giddy as a schoolgirl. Great musical–check! Great lead actor–check! Appropriately creepy and twisted director–check. And I’m sure he’ll tap Helena Bonham-Carter to be Mrs Lovett. Superb.

A film version of Sweeny Todd’s already been done (sorta). It was at the end of Jersey Girl. Now you all know I actually saw that movie, so please don’t tell anyone…

I’M SO EXCITED. Apparently Depp and Burton saw the current Revival (which is simply brilliant) and that helped them decide. I think this movie will be a perfect pairing of director and material and I think Depp will pull it off. I look forward to hearing the rest of the cast!

I read about Tim Burton optioning Sweeney Todd in Sondheim’s interview book Minor/Major (I forget the whole title).
I hope they pull a Catherine Zeta Jones and find those actors will clout who can really sing (dance isn’t required for this musical). I pray they won’t pull a Renee Zellweger!
From reading About Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I don’t think Johnny D. can sing.
Props for the rhyming, Yes, I could match it to the original.
At least with Tim Burton at the helm it won’t suck like Rent!

I saw a bit of the revival on the 60th annual Tony’s and Sweeney looks like Uncle Fester on a rampage. Even my dad was laughing. I think that Burton should go with the new version of Three Penny Opera. The goth twist is fantastic!

What fabulous news! And what a great delivery, Scott Brown!

If Johnny can’t sing, they can always have someone do it for him and dub it. They used to do that all the time, anyway. I know Sweeney is supposed to be older, but I think that Tim Burton and Johnny Depp will be able to really make something fantastic. However, I do hope it is the musical version. For instance, I saw the Liam Neeson “Les Miserables,” and that was disappointing because it didn’t have the songs I associate with that story.

Love Sweeney Todd and love Johnny Depp, but Johnny AS “Sweeney”?? I know his a versatile actor, but I think this one’s a stretch, even if he can sing. What were they thinking? Probably how to get butts in seats which, despite my reservations, will include mine.

Hey, about all this blabla on johnny’s age : why does sweeney have to be a retired old sod ? JD is 44, which fits perfectly into the story… He had a wife in his younger days – was imprisoned and lost for years and years – and comes back, founding his vengeance… Why wouldn’t this be possible at the age of 44 ???
