Seems like yesterday I posted a slightly triumphal entry on the Dixie Chicks’ resurgence, with the assumption (shared by many in the media) that "middle Read the full post.

Apparently the “Americans” who would happily ram the ideals of “Democracy” down the throats of the rest of the world (not that there’s anything wrong with that) seem unwilling to allow it to be practiced in their own back yard. In fact, it seems the vast majority of people who bashed the “Chicks” hold this NIMBY attitude about freedom of speech and being allowed to offer an opinion different from their own, as most especially embodied by that pseudo-redneck closet-preppie in the White house. And they wonder why the “Others” hate us.
no Jennie, you do not know what democracy is.
Living in a true democracy and having freedom of speech means that people are not persecuted for speaking out against their government.
you just don’t get it, do you? that’s sad.
Sara, how old are you? Perhaps you should start to pay attention in social studies. We’re entitled to dislike them as much as they dislike our president. Democracy is not one-sided, although apparently that’s what you believe it to be.
Do you know what “persecution” means? It means “punishment or harassment usually of a severe nature”. I’m sorry, but people not buying tickets to a concert isn’t exactly severe. A bummer for them, perhaps, but not a severe punishment. No one has cut off their fingertips or whipped them at the post. They sleep comfortably at night at their multi-million dollar ranches and travel safely by private jet to their national appearances. Not a bad life for women who you claim have been persecuted.
To all the people who still don’t like the DCs politics: this is supposed to be America. What exactly did they do to deserve this kind of acrimony? They said some stuff that a lot of people disagreed whith. Well, so what? Isn’t that the point of living in America? This isn’t Iran, or Saudi Arabia or China, or some other repressive state where free speech is something that’s only free if you say nice things about the people in power. That fact that Bush is unpopular now isn’t even the point. Even if it had turned out he was right about WMDs, the DCs still had the right to criticize him, and people who disagreed with them had the right to disagree.
Jennie, your comments are becoming more than a little ridiculous.
and fyi… I’m 32 and clearly have a greater understanding of democratic rights that you ever will. You can justify your intolerance any way you’d like, but it’s hypocrisy and it is in complete opposition to the concept of a democratic society.
I really enjoy these comments. It’s fantastic to see Americans arguing so vigorously over something other than Nick & Jessica. I think it’s funny that some people are saying that the Dixie Chicks turned against there fans. Well, aren’t these the same “fans” that, after a very off the cuff comment at a concert not even in America, decided the best way to get back at the Chicks was to burn their CDs, stop radio from playing their songs and, oh yeah, make death threats against them. Makes me want to get warm and fuzzy with them.
I have never bought a Dixie Chicks album and thought I hated them. Then in support of these women, I bought the new album and much to my surprise — it’s really tremendous. I dare anyone who has turned their backs to listen to some of these songs and not be moved. It’s a beautiful cd.
One more thing — “army wife” your comments were so well written and touching — these are the people we should all take a moment and listen to. Hope your husband returns home safely.
Okay Jennie,
To agree with sara, you are persecuting them. You are deliberately trying to destroy their careers by not supporting them. If there were tons of people out there like you, and judging from these comments there are, who all stopped buying DC cds and concert tickets, there careers would end. No record label is going to put out a group’s cd that won’t sell. You are sabotaging someone’s career just because they don’t have the same opinion as you….that is just plain childish! It’s basically you standing up and saying “The Dixie Chicks don’t think like me…I’ll show them!!!” What makes you think you are right and they are wrong anyway. Because You are saying that. You are saying they are wrong by not supporting them…so I guess that mean you have a monopoly on the truth! Sounds just like a Bush supporter.
writefunny, you stole my post.
First off, let me say, I am not a redneck. I never really cared for the Dixie Chicks, even before this mess. And I believe in freedom of speech. However, do NOT make statements against the U.S. when you’re in a foreign country. I don’t like Bush either, but I would never bash him while traveling on foreign soil. As for their concerts, with the price of concerts nowadays, you have to go into debt to see some of these acts!
If the Dixie Chicks have the right to speek their minds (which they do), then people who don’t agree with them have the right to not buy their albums or buy their concert tickets. Freedom of speech/expression works both ways, people.
As for their tickets, I might buy their new CD, but I won’t go see them in concert. Not because I’m making some big political statement, but because I simply don’t like them enough to pay that kind of money to see them live.
The Chicks rock and I can’t WAIT to see them in concert. Please don’t cancel the Iowa show!!! That said, if people don’t want to see them in concert, that’s their prerogative. They’re voting with their wallet – okay. But the death threats, the CD trashing, and the Toby Keith-style taunts equating them with Saddam Hussain was – I’m sorry – completely over the line and insulting to all Americans who value the 1st amendment.
Not a redneck.Just think you dont say you are embarrassed of your president on foreign soil during wartime.period.
The Dixie Chicks-heroes? Honestly? Come on guys, that is a bit much don’t you think? I am just over it. I like their music, but think they are annoying… this is why i won’t attend a concert. I don’t really want to hear their self important chat. I’d rather just use my votes to further democracy.
Give me a break…Dixie Chicks are the most important bands to come along in a decade. Rock on Chicks!
Freedom of speech means not having the government come down on you for criticizing it. It does not preclude you from the consequences of what you say. Just because they have a right to say it, doesn’t mean I have to listen or support it.
Most entertainers are not highly informed about geopolitics anyway. How many entertainers do you know well enough to get advice from? Would you go to your boss and tell him/her how to vote? Say whatever you want, just don’t expect everyone to be enamored with your opinion.
