'Spider-Man 3': More villains?

Categories: Spider-Man 3

You’d think three villains — Venom (Topher Grace), Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), and the new Green Goblin (James Franco) — would be enough to slake the geekthirst of any Spider-fan. But according to this scoop from Marvel Studios CEO Avi Arad, there is another.

Yes, a fourth villain will be announced sometime around Comic-Con. Might it be Lizard, the horribly mutated alter ego of Peter Parker’s scientific mentor, Dr. Connors (played by the probably-too-good-for-this-and-that’s-as-it-should-be actor Dylan Baker in Spider-Man 2)? Are we looking at a Kingpin scenario here? Or maybe it’s one of these scrubs. Let the wild speculation begin!

And with it, a question: How many villains is too many? Has the continuing success of the X-Men franchise convinced Marvel and Hollywood that there can never be too many baddies (or goodies, for that matter)? Is there no such thing as "creep creep"?

    Rhino, Electro??

Having multiple villains in the X-Men made sense because you have mulitple heroes. But, with a singular hero, then can hurt the plot and the pace. Even though you have four villains, are they going with a Sinister Six-type scenario? Doesn’t anyone remember the convoluted overstuffed mess of the Schumacher Batmans? That last one had Freeze, Poison Ivy and Bane; it was all over the place. Now, if they have Spidey quickly fighting and dispensing a villain before the opening credits a la the classic James Bond films, then you might have something, especially if that fight leads to the next advancement of the plot like Superman’s flinging of the terrorists’ bomb early on in Superman 2. But still, four villains…?

I was under the impression that they’d be INTRODUCING 4 new villians, but having Spidey only fighting two… I really don’t think that Marvel Studios would be dumbing down the story for more fights. My thought, is they’ll introduce Venom(his take-over of Spidey, then jump to Brock), but won’t actually have any Venom v Spiderman fights.
They’ll lose alot of Spidey fans if they kill the story just to have Spidey fight 4 villains… Isn’t that what happened to the Batman Series? I always thought Marvel was smarter than DC… i think we’ll see when the movie comes out.

Avi Arad was fired from Marvel. He now has the ubiqitous “producing deal.”

Shouldn’t be more than two. I do have faith in Sam Raimi that he’s gonna keep it tight; maybe have Harry become the Goblin at the end and set up Spiderman 4 with Venom.

If it’s not the Lizard, since we have met Doc Conners already, my next guess would be Man-Wolf, since we also met John Jameson in 2. My other thought is if Venom is one of the main two villians in this film, that perhaps Carnage would be in number four.
I definitely agree with Joe about too many villians. Looking at imdb.com, they do have Baker listed as Conners/Lizard, so I’m betting it’s him and Sandman, with Venom / Goblin set ups.
Of course, after seeing the 2nd film in theatres, my immediate thought at the end was not that Harry would become a new Green Goblin, but rather use his money and the items he found to fund a hoodlum as the Hobgoblin. But with the rumors and cast, the above paragraph still seems the most likely now

I’ve been a Spiderman fan for comics 1st than movies. Which i enjoy both. Sam has done a great job adapting the comic to movie.
One thing i like the most are the stories.
With 4 villians, i don’t mind if 3 are cameos to set up the next few movies, and 1 gets center stage allowing for great charactor development. Too many villians with little development equals, what was the garbage that Brett Ratner directed (X-Man:the Last Stand). Thanks Brett if u direct the next X-Man movie my money stays in my pocket, crap is crap.
Fear not Spidey fans we have a true director with Sam. “Crossing my fingers” with hope he dosen’t go DC on Spidey.

    I’m holding out for Hypno-Hustler.

Wasn’t there a rumor a while back about Eliza Dushku stepping into the game as a character known as the Black Cat?

  • Joe

Well, Lovell, if memory serves me right, Eliza Dusku — grrrowl! — tried out for the role of Mary Jane. The Black Cat is sort of Spidey’s equivalent to Batman’s Catwoman, a sexy theiving femme fatale. That would be great considering I have a major jones for Ms. Dushku. That chick smolders!

Black Cat was not a villian. Feliica Harding was a theif but I don’t think she clobbered Spidey? Plus I thought King Pin was killed off in Daredevil the movie? The villian is “Lizard” Parkers college physics professor.

Part of Spider Man’s appeal has been his creepy foes. They’ve been known to team up together before, so this will be a treat for Marvel junkies like me.
What does seem to crowd it out is “too many heroes”, which is why I doubt the Avengers will make the big screen.
On the other hand, I dream of a Secret Wars movie. How about a re imagined “Wolverine Vs. Spider Man”? That fight scene in the graveyard is a comic classic.

  • EP Sato

PS My money is on “black cat” as the fourth villain. She’s hot, adds a nice tension and a THIRD love interest for Peter. SEXY Sexy Sexy!

  • eli

the fourth villan is peter parker.

the fourth villan is peter parker.

  • kyle

id put my money on Carnage.

  • dANNY

i think they are going to bring the punisher into this one

  • Navin

Does spidey has a choice if their are four villans? He might need backup but in spider-man2 he fought angaist doctor octopus. How do you think he might defeat four if they had kraven or scorpion? Now that I know the all the villans whom spider-man fought I think its one of them.

    i put my money on jackal :-) :-) :-)
