Snap Judgment: Christina Aguilera's new single!

Categories: Music

155843__xtina_lThis may wind up being my last blog item of the afternoon, seeing that as soon as I finish posting it, I’ve got to shut my office door and engage in a little bit of light, Da Vinci Code-style corporal mortification. And what sin would require such a rousing bout of self-abuse, you might ask? Well, earlier this afternoon, I got my first earful of Christina Aguilera’s new single, ”Ain’t No Other Man,” (check it out here) and my response was one of only mild enthusiasm, something along the lines of ”Hey, that’s pretty good.”

Clearly, though, after two solid hours of repeated listening, I’ve seen the error of my ways: Xtina 2006 is fabulous, funky, retro horn-y, and in great voice, delivering what should be an off-kilter kick to the keister of rote top-40 radio. Who knows, if ”Ain’t No Other Man” makes it big, maybe America can find room on the charts for Lina, a fellow retro-R&B diva with one foot in the ’20s? Oh Xtina, can you find it in your heart to forgive me?

And what about you, PopWatchers, do you think I deserve the cilice? Holla!

I like it! Anytime we can get some new music with a little big band tinge, I’m all over it.

  • Jillness

I just heard it on the radio and I LOVE it! Very fun and FRESH. Not predictible like so much of the boring pop that is on the radio. Made me want to shake it!

  • Reese

I totally love it!! Go ahead, X-tina. Not sure if I’ll buy the whole album but I’ll, at least, buy the single on iTunes.

  • Ken Adams

Definately loved it… This song should shake things up this summer. (not to mention it made me want shake things in my living room) Good job X-Tina.

  • Stylish

I loved it! This song makes me realize who is truly the blonde pop-queen in this town! ;)

  • Dean

Hot! Wow, I never knew she had that in her. Don’t like Pop at all, but this is HOT. Took me 2-3 listens, but this is so unique and there’s nothing out there like it. Song of the summer, would be my guess. I think I’m actually gonna get this album.

  • EatACookie

Yeah, I got a sneak peak at hearing this and it’s not bad, not great but it’s a little different that most of the pablum on radio.

  • JD

To quote Randy Jackson,”America, we got a hot one right here!! Dude, that was da bomb”
Going back to find a cure for Yaminitis (Elliot Yamin Depravation!!)

Great single! I love the sound, and only Xtina could take this to the airwaves and get away with it. Superior voice. I hardly ever buy whole albums anymore (thanks to iTunes), but I will definitely purchase this one.

Its ok, She will most likely kill the song with a stupid eccentric video of some sort. But the song is unique, nothing like it out there.. She will also have to compete with Beyonce’s new single “Deja Vu” which most likely will dominate the summer/fall radio stations… Should be a nice battle though.

  • shelly

I don’t like it. I actually find her voice kinda annoying, much like Mariah Scary’s. It is not a real attention grabber. But radio will play it as it caters to R & B as well as pop…hmmmmm intentional? Yes!!!

  • Colby

Wow! Record of the Year Grammy for Aguilera! Hot song!

  • Fatima

It’s not very good. I found the midsection breakdown of “ain’t no other aint aint no other other” to be incredibly annoying. I don’t know, it just bugs me
But LINA! Oh my god it was weird to see that written here. i’ve been a big fan of her’s since 2001’s “Stranger On Earth” record and I always wonder why she doesn’t catch on, not just in the mainstream, but the neo soul scene as well. Despite a switch to Hidden Beach records, she still didn’t even get a review in EW. Boo!

  • Ann Thrope

I loved it just for the fantastic beginning. It maybe drags a bit in the middle, though. But this one can definitely grow on you.

  • Diego

I absolutely love this, great voice, great music, it’s gonna be a HIT :D

  • djm

I love the new Christina song – I hope it does well. As for Lina – I downloaded “Come To Mama” when it was the single of the week on iTunes – LOVE IT!!!

  • johnathan

Not crazy about it. Ech. It’s alright, but doen’t it sound like a knock off of Prince? And her voice does sound kinda obnoxious. I’m not crazy about Mariah, but at least she shows some restraint once in a while.

  • Chris

I really like this song. It is so funny…some of you talk as if we are discussing a sonata or something! It is just fun pop music. Don’t take yourselves so seriously, especially when discussing music that isn’t meant to be intellectually deep!!
It is so nice to hear something that doesn’t sound like everything else on the radio. Music, especially R & B, has gotten so repetative and boring lately. I look forward to workin’ my groove thing to this song. Hot!

  • Tyler

I can’t wait for Christina’s album. I’m sure this is NOT the best song on the album. I like it though. Christina has a voice and knows how to use it. I love my diva Christina.
As for competing with Beyonce. Yeah, yeah. Beyonce can’t even sing HALF as good as Christina.. but Beyonce sells more. I’m frankly sick of Beyonce and not looking forward to her music. Seriously, they played the crap out of her first album. I liked it before that though. The album wasn’t GREAT though. It should not have won 5 grammys. Anyways..

  • dmac

Tyler for the record, Unstripped sold more albums then Dangerously In Love, to say Beyonce cant sang, must mean you either have no idea what singing is, what good singing sounds like. Didnt you watch the ‘04 grammys? She sang Dangerously In Love, to a standing ovation and thunderous applause.

  • Tyler

First of all DMAC, I didn’t know the album sold more than Dangerously in Love, but thank you for that information.
Secondly, I never once said Beyonce couldn’t sing.
Thirdly, I did watch the Grammys and Beyonce way over did that. I was not the only one to say/think that either.
All I said was that I’m not looking forward to her music and she can’t sing as well as others.
I have every right to express my own opinion. Thank you.

  • Jonathan

meh. thumbs down for me. way too excessive.

  • Tyler

I agree with you Grand, but Beyonce does have class too. I’m not just that into her. I find her annoying.
(I’m so bored I keep going on here and checking this. Ha!)

  • Thad

Love her!! not the song so much.

  • Ken Adams

Beyonce Vs. Christina? Christina wins before anyone even opens their mouths. I will admit that Beyonce has had more luck on radio, but Christina’s voice has something that radio can’t do justice to. Her live take on At Last was classic.

  • johnathan

Man, I am SO TIRED of diva competition…but I just can’t help myself. Christina has a better voice than Beyonce, but the way that “XTina” presents herself is classless, and betrays her talent. She seems to start beef with anyone she can, and it just gets annoying. So Beyonce has the upper hand in my opinion, but I’ll take Mariah over either of them any day.

  • Ed

I think I’ve been censored by E.W; they call it spam blogging. I only state opinions which is what this board is about. Here I thought the Dixie Chicks were treated unfairly.
Beward, don’t show any interest in posting or you’ll get sensored too.

  • dmac

Lol awww, Look what I started…. I really should stay off Blog sites, I bring the worste out of people on posts haha…
Beyonce Vs. Christina.. Uh oh…. NEVER!!!!! Haha **Runs in a corner and waits for the trouble I started to subside**

  • dmac

Beyonce has been classified as a Dramatic Mezzo-Soprano because of the strength and power of her singing voice. She is also capable of employing high and fast melismas and this technique is a unique feature to her sound. She has been hailed frequently by the media as one of the best contemporary pop singers. In Cove Magazine’s countdown of the 100 Most Outstanding Pop Vocals of all time, she was placed at number #7 (just 1 place behind Whitney Houston) and given a mark of 48/50 for her vocal capabilities:
Voice type: Dramatic Mezzo-Soprano (possibly classified as a full or Wagnerian soprano)
    Highest notes: D6 , E6, possible F6 or G6
    Lowest notes: C3, E3
Vocal range: (approx) 3.2 octaves (C3-E6)
E6 – A live ‘Whoooooh’ after singing her hit “Work It Out”
D6 – She hits it in her song “Happy Face”
C6 – During a live performance of “Emotions”, Kodak Theatre, 2002
C6 – The highest note in “Emotions” from Destiny’s Child Survivor CD
    E3 – “Dangerously In Love”, Grammys, 2004

  • Julie

This song is HOT. The song may get a bit repetive, but the vocals are top-notch. The song is sassy and fun and oldschool. Radio needs more songs like this. Christina is a true talent.
