What's Weirder? (Rock-Star Behavioral Edition)

152745__jared_lApplying the "What’s Weirder?" test to rock musicians is one of those rabbit holes from which even the most nimble philosopher is unlikely to escape.

Nonetheless, we soldier on:

What’s weirder?

A. James "You’re Beautiful" Blunt invites "bastards who hate my music" to vote with their radios. They do, and now Blunt is enjoying the business-end of democracy.

B. Jared Leto says he was just joshing the other day when he claimed he was ”gay as a goose.” This raises several questions, the most important being: How gay is a goose? And if the saying is true, and what is good for the goose is good for the gander, how do geese even keep their gay stereotypes straight? So to speak? (I’m confused.)

C. ”Won’t Get Fooled Again” atop The National Review‘s list of the 50 Most Conservative Rock Songs? Pete Townshend’s having none of it. He’s also having none of Jack White, whom he claims he could "outdo" with "a guitar and a [expletive deleted] drum machine."

It’s gotta be B. Oh, it’s the goose all the way, baby. It’s always fun to seeHollywood’s barely (yet strenuously) concealed ambisexuality leak outinto the mainstream media. Who knows if Leto’s bi, tri, trans, ora-sexual — and who cares? (Okay, ladies who’ve already invested in hisposters, I suppose.) The point is: Leto is promoting his band usingorientational vagueness — something that harks back to a glammier time.In these days of strict and hyperpoliticized sexual taxonomy, that’skind of refreshing.

It’s also kind of refreshing to see the phrase "gay as a goose"circulating again. I suspect it hasn’t been used since around about theSpanish-American War, when it probably referred to "tippling." Ofcourse, that was also back when "polishing the bishop" meant polishing anactual bishop.

    What’s weirder??
How about the fact that Jared Leto (and for that matter James Blunt) is being referred to as a “rock star”.

Ceballos – have you heard Jared’s band “30 Seconds to Mars”? He actually has talent (unlike most actor/singers out there). Even if you’re not a fan of prog/neo-prog/post-grunge music, their music is rich, complex and exceptionally well-performed.
I discovered the band and fell in love with their music LONG before I discovered Jared Leto was part of it, and I was absolutely SHOCKED when I found out he was not only their lead singer and guitarist, but also their primary composer, and played all of the instruments on their first album except for drums, which are handled by his brother Shannon.
I’ve also read in a few interviews that the band is what he considers to be his “dream job”. I almost get the feeling from what he’s said that he views acting as something to pay the bills and allow him the financial freedom to put as much time and effort into the band’s albums as he does, but he’s not come right out and said that as far as I know.
At any rate, 30 Seconds to Mars is an incredible band, even if you’re comparing them to other bands in a similar genre, not just to other bands featuring actors. They really are the genuine article.

Ceballos, Thank you for saying what was the first thought in my head upon reading “What’s Weirder?”. I mean I HAVE been living in Singapore for the last two years (on an assigment with my husband’s job) and can be out of the loop as far as some pop culture goes. But when did Jared Leto become a Rock Star? And James Blunt = Rock Star. Maybe that should be in the HeadScratcher section. :)

    Kriselda,
I don’t think any one is disputing that Leto has talent. But, Rock Star generally means legions of fans and the whole Rock Star image thing. Just because you Rock doesn’t make you a Rock Star. And a lot of musicians don’t want to be Rock Stars they just want to make Kick A** music. I would think that 30 Seconds to Mars probably falls into that category and therefore like you say the “genuine article”.

  • kriselda jarnsaxa

Ah, ok, I understand you now. :) I though you were meaning he wasn’t a Rock Star in the sense that he (like far too many other actors that we could name) had no business trying to be a musician. Taken the way you explained it there, I agree – he’s much more of a “make kick a** music” guy than “Rock Star”

So I’m saying this from the comfort of my armchair, but I really was not impressed with the style of whoever interviewed Jared Leto.
I don’t think most actors want to be seen as a one note wonder from some short-lived TV series, and while it may not be all that professional, anyone else could have seen that Jared Leto was joking about being gay, and yet this person thinks they have stumbled upon an exclusive. Meh!

  • sam

I am sure that Jared Leto was just joking and it was quite silly for people to act as though he was making some kind of announcement. But he raises an excellent issue–I am so tired of the press’ obsession with people’s sexual orientation. It is irrelevant to talent and just about everything else, except a person’s personal life, which should be their own, even if they are in the public eye.

  • Ceballos

Yeah, i’ve got nothing against Leto (or Blunt). For me it’s more of an issue of the term “rock star” being bandied about a little too freely.

  • BP

Sounds to me like a certain has-been (coughcoughPETETOWNSEND)is feeling a tad bit threatened by a younger, more talented Jack White, although I don’t
really know why, since I have yet to hear White say anything untoward with regards to Townsend. This must be what keeps Pete up at night, and now he just can’t keep his trap shut anymore. Bummer.
