Woman warriors don’t die; they live forever in comic books. That’s the lesson of two recent news items.
First, an update from the ever-expanding Buffyverse: Joss Whedon will be penning another raft of comic books following the adventures of his vampire-slaying heroine and her beloved Scoobies. And yes, it will extend existing continuity, which is a geek-tastic way of saying this will be the Season 8 that never was. Which is as it should be. America’s vampire problem has not abated, and in some ways, has worsened.
In a related resurrection, Batwoman is coming back. And coming out. The occasion is 52, a new series from DC that takes place in a world where the principal "Trinity" superheroes (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman) are out of action. That cedes the stage to lesser known hereoes like The Question, Booster Gold, and Batwoman, who hasn’t been seen since her apparent murder in 1979. Now she’s back… and she likes girls. I don’t know if girl-on-girl action sold to comic-book fanboys qualifies as a bold step. But let’s just enjoy ourselves and feel progressive about it, shall we?

Oh, me geeky self so happy about Season 8! Comic book or not!
Truthfully, I’m a tad underwhelmed by the Batwoman announcement. AFIK, a solo series hasn’t been announced and there’s already a very interesting lesbian Bat-family character in Catwoman. I’ll get excited when a Batwoman comic comes out and its as good as Catwoman.
I was about to say Catwoman’s not gay, but then I remembered Selina Kyle retired and her best bud Holly’s the Feline Fatale now.
As for Batwoman, it should make for an interesting story since she’s supposed to be linked romantically to former Det. Renee Montoya, another great lesbian in DC lore.
Ugh! Why does a strong woman usually equal lesbian or man-hater? I’m a HUGE Bat-fan and I hated Batwoman. There are plenty of other existing female characters that deserve their own series, namely, Black Canary (sans Huntress), or Onyx. And we can bring Batwoman back from the dead, but Oracle/Batgirl will never walk again?! Hogwash!
When and where will this comic book be available?
I just like the thought that futuristic scumbag criminal and sexist jerk turned super hero Booster Gold is coming back (check out his origin if you think I am BSing). I’ve always had been a Marvel guy, but DC’s lesser heroes like Lobo, Booster Gold and Guy Gardner (the only Green Lantern besides Kilowog worth reading about because he isn’t a loser goody two shoes like Lame-o Kyle Rayner, snoozy Hal Jordan or “I became the black green lantern to totally imitate the black iron man” John Stewart) are what make their comics worth reading. Long live ‘Mazing Man!
Ok, not a comic book geek here (at least not since I was a kid), but BUFFY!? I am so there.
Meh. I would much prefer to have buffy not live on in comic books, but in normal books… you know, the old things us kids read in school, with the bindings?
to martin. i like batwoman, but not batman since he is a racist like you.
