HeadScratcher No. 42: Buon Natalie!

152745__macy_l(Alas, technically, this isn’t an official recording. But, oh, if it were…)

So what do these five songs have in common? They were all sung by women named Natalie.

Natalie Wood sang "I Feel Pretty" in West Side Story. Natalie Merchant lends her pipes to 10,000 Maniacs’ "Like the Weather." The Dixie Chicks’ "Not Ready to Make Nice" is, of course, sung by Natalie Maines. Natalie Cole is the voice behind "This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)."  And "I Try" is sung by Macy Gray (born Natalie McIntyre). A-ha!

I guess you either knew it or you didn’t this week — because we didn’t have too many incorrect responses.

Marnie Nixon sang “I Feel Pretty”; Natalie Wood just lip-synched to it.

Seriously. Thanks Charlotte for posting that as the first comment.

What? EW can’t afford a fact checker?

While it’s true that Marni Nixon was rumored to have done some of the vocals for Natalie Wood in “West Side Story,” Wood still gets the credit on the soundtrack album. But thanks for being so diligent, PopWatchers!

seems headscratcher jumped the gun a bit….as soon as I read natalie wood I immediately thought “she didn’t sing a note in West Side Story…” FOR SHAME headscratcher! ;-)

I just double-checked the CD booklet and Marni Nixon is created with all of Maria’s singing except on the Finale (“Somehere” reprise). Elsewhere, she is listed as one of the stars of the movie.
I do recall on the old album that she was credited, but that was back in the day when Hollywood and the record companies thought that we couldn’t tell that Natalie Wood, Audrey Hepburn, and Deborah Kerr all sounded alike.

Haha, I’m glad so many people addressed this! Marnie Nixon did the vocals for Wood’s “I Feel Pretty” and for Hepburn in My Fair Lady.

Yeah, I don’t know where the editor is getting his/her info that Marni Nixon was “rumored” to have done “some of the vocals” for Natalie Wood on “West Side Story”, but if you watch the documentary on the Special Edition DVD Collector’s Set, you’ll see a segment where they compare Marni Nixon’s vocals (which were used in the movie) to some Natalie Wood recorded (which were inferior and NOT used in the movie.)
“Rumored to have done some of the vocals”? How about “acknowledged to have done ALL of the vocals” (except for that reprise mentioned by Charlotte.)
In short…nice try blogfather/Popwatch, but ya’ll messed up on this one. :)

My blogchildren have forsaken me! Out of the will!
