Reviewing the Reviews: 'X-Men: The Last Stand'

91937__xmen_lMaybe every blockbuster should have ”Last Stand” in its title, seeing as editors across the nation appeared to be X-tra inspired by what could (but probably won’t) be their last chance to write a headline for an X-Men movie review. Sure, there were clunkers (Philadelphia Daily News‘s "X-Men explores ethics of bio-engineering" sounds better suited to the New England Journal of Medicine), but as a whole, I was pleased to find a few good Men… headlines, that is. Here’s my top 5:

5. Milford Daily News: ‘Stand’ can’t deliver
4. Christian Science Monitor: ‘X’ marks the spotty sequel
3. New York Post: Rebels With a Claws
2. Australia’s X-Press Online: Mutancy on the Bounty
1. Columbus Dispatch: The joy of X

Oh, and for you Brett Ratner hatas, while MSNBC‘s "Ratner ruins X-Men: The Last Stand" is certain to please, nothing tops SyFy Portal‘s angry-geeky "Ratner Castrates X-Men: Michael Hinman gives final ensemble film three adamantium blades down." Wonder how the dude really feels?

The Dispatch is my hometown paper, and the only one in Columbus…I’ve never known our film critic to be so witty!

    “X-Men 3: That’s all I can stand, I can’t stands no more!”
The id and I – “X marks the spot!”

It was a nice movie. I enjoyed it much. Ratner hatas can bite a big one.

Did you all stay till after the credits rolled. I sort of liked that little scene tacked on after the credits.

Since I haven’t seen X3 yet and the links look spoiler ridden, I’ll avoid them for now, but to all the Ratner haters…wow, get over yourselves. After reading last week’s cover story, I feel bad for him, because he doesn’t deserve all this bad press. Even one of his bigger supporters accused him of being a hack during the X3 shoot. Speaking of which, I never heard anybody stating Ratner is a hack until the X3 shoot. Where the hell did all of this animosity stem from? Oh right…overzealous fanboys, like from the url posted here. What a load of crap. They act like he’s the second coming of Uwe Boll or Joel Schumacher (who directed the horrible Batman Forever/Batman and Robin films). It’s not like Bryan Singer’s X1 was a masterpiece either…in fact, I thought it was rather mediocre.
Even if X3 doesn’t turn out as well as I think it will, I won’t hate Ratner. He helped make the Rush Hour films, which are two of my favorite movies of all time, so disliking him would make me a hypocrite.

I can’t claim to be an X-Men Expert, so I can’t understand why there’s so many people who didn’t like the movie. Maybe there’s nuances and storylines that I am not aware of. Maybe someone can enlighten me. All in all, I Loved the Movie. I actually liked it better than the first two. If Entertainment is what you seek, you want to have a good time, and you want a total popcorn, summer blockbuster movie, X-Men fulfills that. Enjoy!

I went and saw the movie, and i actually liked it. I mean maybe its because my favorite character “storm” got more screentime and some seriouis action battles.. but overall I enjoyed the movie. The first one is the one that lacked sense and plot development to me…
Most of the people I have spoken to who have also seen the movie liked it alot..
So X3 haters can Whip it whip it real good!

I absolutley loved X-Men 3. I read a lot of reviews for the movie and didn’t think any of them were accurate based on what I saw. I mean the Da Vinci Code wasn’t anywhere as near as good as X-men 3. The graphics were phenomenal. The acting was defintley at it’s best. And if they make a fourth movie based on the “secret clip” then they will destroy the original trilogy. It’s perfect as it is. Even a spin-off would be supefluous. And in my opinon, Brett Ratner did just as well as Bryan Singer in directing. Let’s just hope that Singer gets the Superman movie right.

I loved it! While note as good as the last two, this movie was a lot of fun.

X-men and X2 rocked. This one sucked, what are they even fighting for at the end? Is it to protect the boy? The right to get “the cure”? To stop the bad mutants from achieving world domination? It’s kind of vague- or maybe I just missed it during the couple of times I dozed off. Singer, I miss thee.

Brett Ratner is the new Joel Shumacher.

Man, i wanted to defend Ratner but seriously…after watching X-3, I have to pile on. He butchered the vision created by Singer in actually telling a good story with witty dialogue and actual drama. This movie is fun, but its one special effects fight after another with no substance whatsoever. It fast and furious and leads to nothing worth remembering. Plus, you know how there are movies that you know exactly what the ending is going to be five minutes in? Yeah. This is one of them.

I thought is was amazing. The special effects were out of this world, well worth the 250 million reported budget. Man the action was crazy. The story went by too fast. The pace of the film was too fast. It was a bit overwhelming. When Prof X died it was woah did she really just kill him like that? Famke was great as the Phoenix. Again the special effects are the best i’ve ever seen. Man this good was so fun, but also very dark. I hightly recommend it.

  • Andrew

Loved it! I’m a big X-Men fan and thought it was great, a lot of fun to watch.
