Aisha Tyler deserves a better show

173557__aisha_lThe season finale of Ghost Whisperer airs tonight, an event that would go unnoticed in my little corner of the spirit world, were I not a fan of the lovely and talented actress who graces each episode of the freshman CBS series. I’m speaking, of course, of Aisha Tyler (pictured, at left), who plays Jennifer Love Hewitt’s sidekick on the show, and who deserves a better fate than to be upstaged by ghosts, tasteful antiques, and J. Love. Her résumé really ought to make her overqualified for this sort of thing — her funny work on Talk Soup and Friends, her dramatic chops in recurring roles on 24 and CSI, not to mention her poli-sci degree from Dartmouth. Plus, she’s way hotter than her leading lady. Is this the best CBS can do for Tyler? Didn’t she have a development deal there for her own sitcom, which Lisa Kudrow was going to produce for her? Whatever became of that?

Then again, Tyler’s not the only talented-but-underused TV performer PopWatch would love to see showcased on a better series of his or her own. There’s Seth Green from Four Kings, Harry J. Lennix from Commander in Chief, Blair Underwood from the unlamented LAX, Jacqueline Obradors (formerly of NYPD Blue, now playing straight woman to Freddie Prinze Jr. on Freddie), and Love Monkey‘s Judy Greer, to name a few.

Any other suggestions, all you armchair talent agents? Who do you think deserves a better show?

Emily Proctor, who was fantastic on the West Wing, is squandering her gifts being on the laughable CSI Miami. Why didn’t Aaron Sorkin steal her away to be on his new show?

    Anyone from Arrested Development!
And Jennifer Coolidge. Such a brilliant character actress.

I disagree with you. I like Ghost Whisperer. I think it and Close to Home are great shows on Friday night.
I would have to say Jennifer Coolidge from “Joey” and Emily Proctor from “CSI Miami” rate MUCH higher on this type of list than Aisha Tyler.

Hill Harper! He was on the short-lived show The Handler with Joe Pantoliano, and he showed a remarkable range. He also had a great guest appearance on The 4400. Now he’s stuck/stifled on CSI:NY. If you look him up on IMDB, you’ll see an extensive history of mostly supporting roles — and he deserves a lead. Oh yeah, and he has a law degree from Harvard, *and* a Master’s in Public Administration. Yowza!
Jennifer Coolidge? She’s definitely good in supporting character roles in films like American Pie and A Mighty Wind, but if her work on Joey is any indication, her talent doesn’t translate well to sitcom-land. I don’t think I see her in a leading role. But I’ve been wrong before!

I like Ghost Whisperer too. But I agree Aisha Tyler is underused as an actress.
P.s Arrested Development was underrated… why didn’t people watch it? – I’ll miss it so!!.

Aisha Typer “way hotter” than Jennifer Love Hewitt? Dude, you should sue you eye doctor!

Nia Long, who would be GREAT to pair with Aisha on a dramedy…

Aisha Tyler sure is hotter than JLH. Jennifer is a skinny “cute” looking chick w/big boobs – no offense. AT has a very pretty face and an equally nice body.
I imagine if she hangs around long enough someone will figure out what to do with her, a la Lauren Graham eventually striking gold with the Gilmore Girls.

Gary, I have to disagree with your assessment of Seth Green. The only time he’s ever been funny is when he was sharing the screen with Dr. Evil and/or Mini-Me, and that’s only because those characters were so damn funny! Otherwise, he’s painfully unfunny.

Jennifer Coolidge’s talent would translate well to QUALITY-sitcom-land. The problem is that she’s been living in crappy-spinoff-sitcom-land for the last two years.
I’d be interested to see what other kinds of roles Shelley Morrison from Will & Grace can do. After doing Rosario for the last few years, I don’t think she’d be a lead, but a different kind of supporting role would be intriguing.

paul ketz you must be smoking coz aisha tyler is as good as those females you called out

While we’re on the subject of an awful show with terrific performances, send Brian Green whereever you send Jacqueline, because he has been hilarious on a weekly basis, which is coming a long way from his 90210 days…

  • Terry

I am desperate to see Stockard Channing in a role that fits her only half as well as Abbey Barltlett. Now there’s an actress that can say more with a raised eyebrow than many others could with three pages of dialogue and props !

  • Paul Ketz

CJ must need his eyes checked. I said I liked Aisha on Ghost Whisperer. I don’t think she needs a better show because she is on a good show.
I think Jennifer Coolidge and Emily Proctor need new shows. So, on a list of women needing new shows, they need new shows more than Aisha. That’s all I’m saying.
    Sorry you aren’t literate!

Stockard Channing is long overdue for superstardom. As for Tyler, the best fast track for comic stardom is as a reporter on The Daily Show.
