Awesome.
I thought the first trailer for Superman Returns was underwhelming, but this new trailer actually makes me excited to see the movie. Its secret weapon is lotsa Luthor (Kevin Spacey): invading Superman’s polar Fortress of Solitude; having some wicked fun menacing Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth); and demonstrating a kind of actor’s glee that we haven’t seen in a Spacey performance since American Beauty. I also dug Frank Langella’s typically cool and sardonic take on Perry White; he promises to be the first movie newspaper editor I’ve seen since Jason Robards in All the President’s Men who acts like an actual newspaper editor and not the hyperactive, cigar-chomping caricature derived from dinner-theater productions of The Front Page. And I’m warming to Brandon Routh’s boyish Superman and Bosworth’s starry-eyed Lois.
None of this is to slight the larger, more general pleasures of the trailer — action, spectacle, romance, alienation, humor, heroism, self-sacrifice, special effects — all the things you’d want in a Superman movie, which the trailer promises in spades. I’m just noting that, if the film gets even these smaller details right, then I’m optimistic that Bryan Singer has handled the bigger challenges just as deftly. For the first time, I’m thinking June 30 can’t come soon enough.

Here’s my big problem with this film as well as the rumor of The Joker being the villian in the next Nolan/Bale Batman flick… these characters have been around for decades. Why do we need to keep dipping into the Lex Luthor/Joker wells? There are more stories to be told than yet another showdown with Luthor. I’m hoping for the best but have my doubts despite the talented Singer helming the project.
Hey Dan, I would agree that there are other stories to tell, but you saw what happened to Superman 3 and 4, as well as Batman and Robin. Besides, the masses want the familiar faces, and since both of these franchises are being re-born (Superman and Batman), let’s start off with the stuff we’re familiar with. There’s plenty of fodder with these heroes and villians. With that said, I can’t wait to see this movie! I’m more excited about this than X3.
Holy moley! I wasn’t a huge superman fan, but that trailer is amazing – now I’m counting the days!
I didn’t see the trailer because it wasn’t working but I have to say I like Superman and Smallville but this looks like a turkey. I wish they would’ve done something new and cool with suit or something. Batman was re-invented for each incarnation and it worked (mostly) but this SM looks dated and boring.
Maybe you should actually watch the trailer before commenting.
I’m just hoping they keep the Superman theme in the film.
This movie is going to be awesome
Is that Jaime Pressly behind him in the picture?
Jaime Pressley? Hmmmm…my first thought was, is that Parker Posey behind him?
As Lex Luthor hilariously says… “BRING IT ON!”
Oh, and to the person who says this looks like a turkey but Smallville is still cool, you must be watching the reruns on ABC Family, b/c Smallville this year is LAME!!
Super Spectacular trailer. Yes and Kevin Spacey looks like he is gonna act the hell out of this role. Also saw one from X3 i haven’t seen yet on tv last night which also looks awesome as well. Looks like were’re going to have A SUPER XCELLENT summer ’06 folks, if they both live up to the trailers.
Diana – good call on Parker Posey! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0348150/
OMG! I’m so there opening day. Ok maybe opening weekend. But I’m there. Haven’t seen a movie since I saw Revenge of the Sith 3 times, but I’ll make this one.
I wasn’t excited about Superman before, but this new trailer really did it for me. Bring it on!
I wanted to see it, till I watched that trailer. It looks boring with a lack of special effects. Ho-hum.
Oh – this movie is about Clark Kent – from the teaser trailer I saw, I thought it was another movie about Thomas Anderson . . .
