And the award for the most anticlimactic awards show goes to… The MTV Movie Awards! (Pretend I’m reading the rest of this paragraph in a curmudgeonly grandpa voice.) Back in the day, this used to be a funny, spontaneous show. Or at least, it used to come off that way. Now, however, it’s about as canned and uncontroversial as a Bush rally.
Not even today’s announcement that the host of next month’s ceremony will be Jessica Alba (who, I’m sure it’s just a coincidence, is nominated for three popcorn-tub trophies) is likely to muster up much viewer enthusiasm for the June 8 broadcast. (Which, of course, premieres several days after the show is taped and the winners’ names released to the news media.) Still, we can hope for a little suspense or surprise. Alba narrowly avoided a wardrobe malfunction at last year’s show. Maybe this year she’ll display some of her heretofore underexposed assets — like a flair for comedy.

Should have gotten someone that’s more hip and entertaining.
Alba is hot, but as bland as sandpaper.
Should have went with someone like Dane Cook. Large fanbase, naturally funny and charismatic, way huge among the young crowd but not overexposed yet.

I was also surprised to see her mentioned as host. Alba can dance but I don’t think of her when I think funny. She will likely spend the night in multiple outfits, serving as the straight man to several outrageous award presenters.
This will probably be the worst MTV Movie Awards ever. Come on, the best actor and actress categories combined into one category?! That’s not right! And there’s only 2 female nominations in the category! And Jessica Alba nominated for her role in Fantastic Four?! That’s wrong! She was totally miscasted in that movie! She does not make a good Invisible Woman. As for Heath and Jake getting a nomination for best kiss in Brokeback Mountain, I would love to see them win! They were the cutest on-screen couple of 2005, in my opinion! ^_^ But I don’t think people will vote for them. It will be just like the Oscars. Shame on them!
If Jessica ALba is hosting, I will watch. She is hot; it’ll be worth watching just to check out how she looks…
Jessica Alba? This is the best they can get for a host? She’s pretty, yeah, but you need a host that’s funny in order to carry the show, like Dane Cook and his SuperFinger.
In agreement w/ nearly everyone on this blog, and considering the only highlight of last year’s show was the Foo Fighters performance, we’re owed at least as much to have Jessica Alba replaced by the hilarious Dane Cook. A five minute stint on the VMA’s just isn’t enough exposure for the guy.

Ill watch simply becuz im a TV junkie, and thats basically all i do. But i have to admit the show has been getting very boring lately. I basically watch for the movie spoofs they do. Those are always fun. But um i guess Jessica Alba would make a good host, she cant be any worse then Lindsey Lohan.
Yeah yeah yeah, the show should definitely be broadcast live. It’s damn difficult to avoid newspapers and newssites for days so some of the surprise can be preserved. And I also agree that MTV should stop shifting categories around all the time (no more Best Action Sequence! AAAARRRGH!). But have you noticed how the Best Movie winner always seems to exemplify the trends in contemporary cinema? There are very good reasons why “Terminator 2″, “Pulp Fiction”, “Se7en”, “Scream”, “Titanic”, “There’s Something About Mary”, “The Matrix”, “Napoleon Dynamite” and all three “Lord of the Rings” movies have won this award. Forget all the silliness and arbitary popularity contests, forget the music acts and movie parody sketches (though I won’t, personally). The Best Movie award on this show is a much more accurate indicator of a film’s cultural impact than the Oscars or any other awards show I can think of. For that reason if no other, I’ll continue to tune in every year.
