'Daily Show': What was that song?

Filed under: Television and tagged:

The following blog entry is an experiment in time travel. See, I’ve yet to watch last night’s Daily Show. Why? Because it’s yesterday right now. You’re reading this today, but I’m typing it yesterday. Confused, McFly? Well, suck it up: So am I. Something about an autopost at 6 a.m. I dunno; I just write this crap.

Anyway, here’s the deal — and stick with me through the tense changes — in my near future, on last night’s Daily Show, there will be (and has been) a report by John Hodgman, the very funny author of the very funny book The Areas of My Expertise. And he will be doing/will have done a very funny report on… something, I don’t know what. But something. And the music augmenting said report is by the very funny underground songwriter Jonathan Coulton.

Coulton specializes in geekery that’s both hilarious and weirdly heartfelt. I especially recommend "Skullcrusher Mountain," a steel-guitar-inflected ballad about a lovelorn supervillain. The verse about the half-monkey/half-pony is priceless.

So that’s the morning/evening news, time travelers. In the future (or the past, I’m not sure anymore), just TiVo these blog entries and read them later. It’ll save us both a lot of trouble.

That episode was, IMHO, one of the very best Daily Show’s I’ve ever seen …and I’m a regular. Hodgman (AND the song) were absolutely fall-off-the-couch hysterical. In tribute I shall quote the song (as the first post-er did) “but the Kurds rem-a-a-a-i-i-i-n the sa-a-a-a-a-a-a-me”. Priceless…as were the opening bits about Bush/alternative fuel and the goofy and thoroughly entertaining Tom Selleck interview! :) )
