Just because a certain member of my household doesn’t share my enthusiasm for small, shivering, bulgy-eyed canines (scroll down to Chihuahua cozies) doesn’t mean I can’t live out my dog-show dreams — in a virtual setting, anyway. Thanks to those crazy kids at Metafilter, I’ve discovered ShowDog.com, a surprisingly detailed online game that’s kind of like fantasy baseball for folks who find two nights of Westminster coverage doesn’t quite sate their passion for competitive pooches. The site lets you play the role of breeder-owner-handler-trainer-groomer to your show-dog stable, includes a nifty breed selector, and even lets you delve into specifics like which brand of chow to choose (Old Boy Generic Dog Food? I think not!) Anyhow, if you don’t see any more blog posts from me today, you know where I’ll be: Off trying to decide whether to purchase Casa Blanca Penguin Suit, Sunshines Rock Your Body, or the aptly named American Idol Fansite.

The site really stinks nowadays. Most of the players from a year ago have left. Some breeds are wastelands with no competition. The site owner ignores players when they tell him about things that need to be fixed. Game play is being affected and it’s frustrating us yet the guy just wants to take our money and not maintain the site.
Really disappointing site! The webmaster constantly promises things he never delivers. You can’t get a refund for unused portions of your subscription, and renewal is automatic if you pay thru Paypal (unless you cancel the sub before renewal time rolls around). Site is teeming with bugs, doesn’t list the end date of your sub so you have to hunt it up yourself (what kind of amateur-hour operation does that?!?), and contains tons of outdated/inaccurate information within its own help section. When the latter was pointed out, a moderator responded with a snotty answer.
Sorry to hear your so disappointed, I have played for years, and enjoy participating in showing and breeding. I have played other sites, and unlike elsewhere, everyone is more then helpful and friendly to newbies on how to play and what to look for to succeed, unless a newbie comes off as in it purely for attack. I also do Showcats, owned by the same person, while it is supported with changes and updates less, people all help one another. They used to NOT automatically update but send a notice out to your kennels, most wanted renewal to be as a roll over, as it is now.
Subcription rollovers are cheats, just anotehr way for Jeff to keep more of our money. Why dont they offer refunds of subscriptions? Hmm?
Crapola! I thought this game would be so cool and instead it’s just dumb. There is not enough to do. Gameplay is way unrealistic and boring. Crapola!
