Yo Dawg, what's goin' down? ShowDog.com, that's what!

Just because a certain member of my household doesn’t share my enthusiasm for small, shivering, bulgy-eyed canines (scroll down to Chihuahua cozies) doesn’t mean I can’t live out my dog-show dreams — in a virtual setting, anyway. Thanks to those crazy kids at Metafilter, I’ve discovered ShowDog.com, a surprisingly detailed online game that’s kind of like fantasy baseball for folks who find two nights of Westminster coverage doesn’t quite sate their passion for competitive pooches. The site lets you play the role of breeder-owner-handler-trainer-groomer to your show-dog stable, includes a nifty breed selector, and even lets you delve into specifics like which brand of chow to choose (Old Boy Generic Dog Food? I think not!) Anyhow, if you don’t see any more blog posts from me today, you know where I’ll be: Off trying to decide whether to purchase Casa Blanca Penguin Suit, Sunshines Rock Your Body, or the aptly named American Idol Fansite.

The site really stinks nowadays. Most of the players from a year ago have left. Some breeds are wastelands with no competition. The site owner ignores players when they tell him about things that need to be fixed. Game play is being affected and it’s frustrating us yet the guy just wants to take our money and not maintain the site.

Really disappointing site! The webmaster constantly promises things he never delivers. You can’t get a refund for unused portions of your subscription, and renewal is automatic if you pay thru Paypal (unless you cancel the sub before renewal time rolls around). Site is teeming with bugs, doesn’t list the end date of your sub so you have to hunt it up yourself (what kind of amateur-hour operation does that?!?), and contains tons of outdated/inaccurate information within its own help section. When the latter was pointed out, a moderator responded with a snotty answer.

Sorry to hear your so disappointed, I have played for years, and enjoy participating in showing and breeding. I have played other sites, and unlike elsewhere, everyone is more then helpful and friendly to newbies on how to play and what to look for to succeed, unless a newbie comes off as in it purely for attack. I also do Showcats, owned by the same person, while it is supported with changes and updates less, people all help one another. They used to NOT automatically update but send a notice out to your kennels, most wanted renewal to be as a roll over, as it is now.

Subcription rollovers are cheats, just anotehr way for Jeff to keep more of our money. Why dont they offer refunds of subscriptions? Hmm?

Crapola! I thought this game would be so cool and instead it’s just dumb. There is not enough to do. Gameplay is way unrealistic and boring. Crapola!

This game has gone WAY downhill. I was a regular player for around four years until 2012, when I became too busy to keep up with my kennels. I returned to the site a couple of months ago only to find that it has become very poorly run. Not that it was great before, but now it’s truly terrible.

First of all, most of the dog breeds have hardly any players–some appear to have NO active players at all–so it’s virtually impossible to obtain even a single halfway decent dog of that breed. Instead you are forced to start with horrific “starter” dogs that require many months of concentrated breeding efforts to bring up to respectable standards. It would probably take a year to do this.

The lack of players means that it’s extremely difficult to finish your dogs in shows. You’re generally stuck with playing against yourself, entering several of your own dogs in the same show so that just one of them can win and earn points. Due to show entry fees, this becomes expensive very fast and drains your game cash, thus making it very difficult to continue playing.

The game is full of glitches. In fact, many of the glitches existed since before I quit playing back in 2012. Incredibly, they have not been addressed in all of this time. The owner almost never responds to posts on the “Bugs” message board that is meant to inform him of site problems. When he does post a message, his tone is usually snotty and curt. He has also stated that he’s more interested in developing his games that are more profitable than in fixing this one.

I guess that says it all. Showdog.com is a DOG of a game! Be sure to avoid the owner’s other animal sites, which mostly have “Show” in the name. (Showcat, for example. Trophyhorse is another of his losers. Try Derbyfever, com instead for a truly good horse game.)
