Sure, the seven remaining American Idol finalists have already picked their selections from one of Rod Stewart’s four Great American Songbook CDs, but that doesn’t mean it’s not fun to play Tuesday-morning vocal coach and tell them what we’d like to hear them sing tonight. I’ve already come up with my own request list, and now it’s your turn: Check out the track listing for Stewart’s Vol. I, II, III, and IV and then pair each contestant (yes, even Ace) with the song you think best suits him or her.
Elliott Yamin, ”Everytime We Say Goodbye”
Chris Daughtry, ”I’m in the Mood for Love”
Kellie Pickler, ”Makin’ Whoopee”
Katharine McPhee, ”Blue Moon”
Paris Bennett, ”S’Wonderful”
Ace Young, ”I Only Have Eyes for You”
Taylor Hicks, ”Night and Day”

My roommate and I played the “What should they sing?” game last night…
Paris – “I’ll Be Seeing You”
Elliot – “Way You Look Tonight”
Katherine – “Blue Moon” or “Where or When”
Chris – “‘Til There Was You”
Taylor – “Blue Skies”
Kellie – “Smile” or “Blue Moon”
We couldn’t figure out Ace…but hopefully he’ll be going home anyway
Also, this is definitely a week where Paris, Katherine and possibly Taylor can absolutely tear down the house!
Here are my picks:
Chris- “What a Wonderful World”
Katherine- “The Nearness of You”
Paris- “Blue Skies”
Elliot- “My Funny Valentine”
Taylor- “You Send Me”
Ace- “I’ll Be Seeing You”
and I kind of like “Makin Whoopee” for Kellie even though she’d probably have no clue what she’s actually singing about!
Just my thoughts:
Katherine – When I Fall In Love
Chris – Blue Moon
Taylor – Ain’t That A Kick In The Head
Paris – Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered
Elliott – Smoke Gets In Your Eyes
Ace – Makin’ Whoopee
Kellie – It Had To Be You
Daughtry should sing “Do You Think I’m Sexy” for obvious reasons.
To keep the judges and audiance awake, can’t someone sneak in Maggie May or Stay With Me?
Why aren’t they going to do any of his earlier hits like “Maggie Mae”, “Do You Think I’m Sexy?”, ‘Young Turks”?
Who cares what the other contestents sing but Elliot? Please, please, Elliot, don’t blow it.
They’re not doing Rod Stewart songs, they’re doing classic torch songs from the 30′s and 40′s.
Kellie- Blue Skies ( I would have said “Crazy” since she did Klein before and nailed it, but this song would come in a dead second).
Katherine- Makin’ Whoopie
Ace- Since I don’t have you
Paris- Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered
Taylor- They Can’t Take That Away From Me
Elliot- You Send Me
Chris- My Funny Valentine (He can do it better than Constantine did it, and he knows it.) or Smoke Gets In Your Eyes
I just hope that Chris will lighten it up a tad tonight. Crack a smile, darlin’! We’ll still love you!
I really wish they were doing Rod Stewart songs. Taylor would be great on “Every Picture Tells a Story”, from Faces era.
What makes AI so irritating are these stupid theme nights. The idea that these kids need to perfect a dozen genres of music is ridiculous. If and when they do get a recording contract, they will find the best sound for their voices and audiences, and stick with it, not try to be all things to all audiences. You don’t hear Mary J Blige doing country, you don’t hear Shania Twain singing showtunes and you don’t hear Metallica doing R&B. There’s a reason… nobody wants to hear that! If the producers of AI really wanted a contest, they should allow the contestants to choose songs based on their interests/abilities, and not force them into these awful pre-determined train wreck performances.
This theme night bites! When I heard last week that it was Rod Stewart week, I was psyched and thought it would actually be HIS songs. While I am a fan of the classic songs Rod has recorded, don’t call it Rod Stewart night. Gah!!! No Do Ya Think I’m Sexy for Ace…Taylor would have been great for Hot Legs…Elliot for Young Hearts or First Cut is the Deepest…Chris for Maggie May…etc etc…sniff.
this theme is too similiar to the barry manilow stuff. idol has changed in many positive ways since it began, they need to get rid of these theme nights. i personally wouldn’t mind hearing people sing within two or three genres, maybe we should just stick to decades. if anything it should have been ROD STEWART songs, not songs from the songbook. however, the performances should be pretty good
If they aren’t doing vintage Rod Stewart, why bother calling it Rod Stewart night? Who really associates the Great American Songbook with Rod Stewart? Why not just call it Standards night? I hate these stupid theme nights, too. GOB has the right idea. Let the artists pick their own songs. Enough of them have such overinflated opinions of their singing abilities that the train wrecks would start early on and continue for the entire show. Just a thought.
