Last week, EW got the Oscar ball rolling with a discussion of potential contenders none of us have seen yet. And now that the 79th Academy Awards have been set for Feb. 25, 2007, you can start sending Evites for your annual Oscar bash. (Oh, come now, it’s never too early.) One interesting question raised by the good folks at Movie City News: Does the earlier Oscar date box the Golden Globes into ”increased obscurity”? Probably not — as long as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association maintains its open-bar policy. All together now: ”Glaaaadiator!”

MS – I totally agree with you.
Why does the GG have to be a barometer of the Oscars? This is an awards ceremony with an open bar for cripe’s sake!
TWO SEPERATE AWARDS ENTITIES PEOPLE! One doesn’t have to be influential over the other. The HFPA has never tried to be what the Oscars is or equal it’s meaning in terms of the prestige of it’s award. Rather, the HFPA has always been it’s own circuit that rewards or recognizes films that Oscar would otherwise ignore. While often the HFPA sees eye-to-eye with the Academy, again, it’s never tried to actually BE the Academy or take over. Hence giving Madonna a Best Actress Award or Jim Carrey back-to-back Globe wins when the Academy would no sooner turn their noses and literally rub them a pile of crap than give them nominations. The HFPA prides itself on NOT being a pre-cursor to the Oscars.
If they wanted to influence the Academy, they would have said good bye to the television side and free booze a LONG time ago.
Another thing that separates the Globes from the Oscars is that the Globes are generally ACCURATE with their winners.
PS, I mean come on, Crash, Shakespeare in Love!! and that’s just recently, Paul Giamatti has made more good movies over the past 4 years than most others and he has one freakin’ nomination (for a supporting role) and DIDN’T even win that.
It’s nice that funny moments like Liz’s “Glaaaadiator!” announcement can be shared by people all over the world at the same time. Usually when people talk about TV’s power to unite, they’re talking about tragedies, like 9/11. Hmm…why is Debbie Downer’s theme song playing in my head?
