Paula Abdul was totally on something the other night. And the something she was on was The Tonight Show. And holy schadenfreude, was it painful.
In the pantheon of awkward, irreparably compromised talk-show interviews, it doesn’t approach the gold standard, Madonna on Letterman, 1994. But one could still feel that familiar is-this-the-end-of-civilization? thrill as Paula laid into Jay for his perceived attacks on her whimsical American Idol persona. SEE her totter in that bizarre chapeau! HEAR her deliver a strenuously unfunny joke monologue about a drinking problem she then denies having! GASP as she uses her décolletage to hawk a line of "bargain" jewelry!
I mean, it’s not the worst talk show moment in history. And it’s certainly not Matthew McConaughey’s brilliantly woozy appearance on The Daily Show a few years back. (Will someone please upload this? Please?) But it’s a hall of famer. And I’ll have what she’s having.

Hey Paula? Can you push that wonderbra any higher? Yikes.
Don’t forget Farrah Fawcett’s appearance on Dave. Or Courtney Love anywhere, anytime.
What about Drew Barrymore flashing David Letterman? Classic.
Paula seemed jaded and angry the whole time. She needs to stop taking herself so seriously and just have fun with it. I think that’s what she wanted to do on the Tonight Show but it just came off like a horrible train wreck.
I think her feelings really were hurt, so she was trying to shake it off, but it came across a little forced. Ah well, she looked amazing though.
Oh God…that was fantastically awful…
Man, I thought Tarantino drunk on The Tonight Show was cringe-worthy, but THIS…this takes the taco.
I thought she was merely mocking herself. If this was done on Saturday Night Live, you guys would have laughed out loud. I raise my martini glass to her.
Cheers Paula!!!
Yeah, I didn’t think that was so bad at all. I was expecting something really awful, but I actually thought her little top 5 thing was pretty funny. She had some good one liners here and there too. It seems like she really is sensitive to all the false rumors, so she really makes an effort to take all the issues head on.
She is an idiot…
Madonna takes the cake for her infamous Letterman appearance…she ROCKS!
It was hard to watch because even though she really wants to be funny and brush off her critics with humor, she is painfully awkward and unfunny. Pay attention to the audience in that clip; they’re really digging for chances to laugh and applaud.
This is definitely off topic, but if you like Destiny’s Child listen to their never released singles called “Got’s My Own” and “Two Step”. You have got to check them out!!
You forgot the time that Tom Green brought the alcohol cart out onto the stage of Jay Leno and started taking shots. I read somewhere that he didn’t remember his appearance the next day…
Leave Paula alone. It wasn’t that bad…sure, sometimes she isn’t the most hilarious person, sometimes it may seem a little awkward, but sometimes she has really good one-liners and doesn’t mind poking fun at herself. I don’t think it is our place to speculate what she might be “on”, and to say that is painfully awkward and among the worst television moments is too extreme. Just enjoy the show you guys and make fun of other things that are actually worth making fun of…Luv ya, Paula!!
it wasn’t bad…it was a lil’ sad and trying-too-hard (she clearly would have rather been somewhere else – she was shakin’ her leg like a polaroid pictchah). but as it was greatly pointed out, and to paraphrase cher, none of these lil’ b*tches have anything on madonna, who even at maddening late-night appearances has farrah, paula, tom, drew, courteney love, mcconaughey, etc., beat. so EW, you had better be preppin’ a cover story on M for may!
I am beginning to wonder if she is related to Mariah?!
Wait…that’s it, Paula can be the new duet partner!
