Pick Mariah's new duet partner: Janet or Whitney?

Categories: Celebrity Couples, Music

93517__mj_lSo here’s a little news out of the strange-but-possibly-true-Mariah-Carey-duets department: MTV Radio (fifth item) is reporting that Mimi’s producer of choice, Jermaine Dupri (”We Belong Together,” ”Shake It Off”) is hoping to get her in the studio with his girlfriend Janet Jackson, and that Carey’s amenable to the idea. "I’ve been a big fan of Janet’s since Control. So if Jermaine has a concept, we should go and write something," she said.

Meanwhile, a couple of not-terribly-well-sourced Web sites are reporting that Carey has also extended an invite to embattled diva Whitney Houston to team up for a career-rehabilitating track. While the latter prospect sounds intriguing (maybe that ”Do you like my glasses, glasses” ditty could work?), lingering memories of the dreary ”When You Believe” make me more excited about a Mariah-Janet pairing. Sure, it’s hard not to imagine Carey’s plus-sized vocals gobbling up Janet’s warble like Pac-Man to a blue ghost, but J.D. wouldn’t let that happen to his leading lady, would he?

Which duet would you rather hear? Mariah-Whitney or Mariah-Janet?

Mariah and Whitney do “Oh Hell No!” j/k sad to say i think Whitney is out for the count, maybe for all time. a Mariah/Janet throwdown might be fun, as long as they did a club track and not some sappy ballad.

  • brandonk

Mariah-Janet, definitely. I agree with Paul, though…something fun and upbeat. Janet shines in those, and Mariah should try something more pop-ish instead of all that R&B/hip-hop.

Mariah/Janet. I am with Paul on both counts. Whitney’s had a lot of unflattering press and an unflattering reality tv show since her “good girl image” days. But if you get Mariah & Janet together for some club friendly fun, my spidey sense tingles with thoughts of a feel good hit this summer.

Not until I read this post did I realize that I sorely need a Mariah/Janet club jam. Thanks, Michael. This better happen!

  • David

Also: Another big thanks to Michael for helping me flush three ostensibly productive hours down the drain for multiple rounds of Pac-Man.

    Song ideas:
    Mariah/Whitney: Hell to the No.
    Mariah/Janet: Subterranean Wardrobe Malfunction Blues

Can we split the difference and vote for Madonna? Those two divas together would rock the planet to its very core.

I don’t think that Whitney needs to be in the studio right now. She needs to be getting her life together. That’s my opinion. Now Mariah and Janet. That would be interesting to see.

  • demarcus

I think a Janet/Mariah collaboration would defiantly be a hit.

  • Joe

I’m not sure how it would work out with Mariah dueting with Janet. Their musical styles are different it would be very intresting to see. I think it be great to hear Mariah duet with Christina Aguilera theres someone who could at least stand up to Mariahs vocals and not drown each other out. As for Whitney she needs to do something soon! And something worth buying. Do I need to mention her last cd?

  • Ken

Is it possible that all three could team up for a recording session, then the studio catches on fire?

  • nessa

If Mariah and Janet did do a duet the entire video would be one big clevage shot. – Jermaine dupri could get lost down there…..

  • Kelly

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!! To tell the truth I have been hoping for a Janet/Mariah song for years but wasn’t sure if they liked each other enough to get it off the ground. W/ JD producing I know if they come out with a dance/club song it will be the smash of the summer!!! God, can you imagine the video??????? I am excited just thinking about it!! I am keeping my fingers crossed!

i would love to see whitney make a comeback. she has an incredible voice, one that the masses should enjoy. mariah certainly knows something about making a comeback, hopefully she will sympathize.
i pray she is not down for the count. what a horrible fall for anyone.
i was never convinced janet had a killer voice, but she was a great performer. that’s probably not fair, but in terms of voice, whitnney would probably be better. janet and mariah on tour would be something. mariah has respectably come to grips with her chunkiness, and it’s refreshing. seeing her keep up with janet would be tough on stage.

  • dmac

while i would personally like to see a beyonce/mariah pairing.. i suppose mariah/janet might not be so bad.. um.. whitney is out of the question shes to far gone… sad but true.

Speaking of team ups, has missy elliot teamed up with Gwen Stefani yet? Gwen rocked the house with Eve, and Missy’s remixed ‘Get cher freak on” with Nelly Furtado was HOT. Them two women need to get they butts into a studio and fast!

  • Reggie P.

Janet and Mariah? Now that will be fire especially since Janet is going to wreck them all in the 06′.

  • JohnF

    How about Celine?
Quick decision: you’re stuck on a deserted island and could pick either Mariah, Whitney or Celine to keep you company. Which one would you pick and why?

  • Dee

How bout neither. Actually I can’t think of any female she should pair with but Mary J Blige or a guy like Jamie Foxx. No Beyonce please.

  • Roman

Whitney in is desperate need of an intervention, so I suppose a Whitney/Mariah track would be the best way to go. Personally, I’d like to see Mariah belt it out with Kelly Clarkson. Now that would be a show!

  • Joe C

Michael, you know how to get me going. Who would I like to hear my fave singer of all time(Mariah) sing with? I’ll take Janet over Whitney, but honestly I’d love a Mariah/Alicia Keys duet. Killer!

  • Paul K

How about Whitney/Janet/Mariah all together and they do an awesome, thumping club song like the remix of “It’s Not Right, But It’s Okay.”
Or Mariah/Kimberley Locke – both have good strong, belting voices.
Or Mariah/Mary J. Blige if you want to do a soul song.
    Or Mariah/Kelly Clarkson. Mariah/Tamyra Gray. Mariah/Christina Aguilera.
    All would be good.
I would recommend an upbeat song for any of them though. A dance-type song, NOT R&B.

  • poopjuice

Mariah should quit singing, have a baby, and let Madonna control the pop music scene. We are tired of Mariah’s whispy crap pop.

  • john

I thin a Mariah/Kelly Clarkson song could be a smash. On Mariah’s Charmbracelet album she did a cover of Bringin on the Heartbreak which was very rock flavored, so I think she could definitely lean towards Kelly’s pop-rock sound. Meanwhile, Kelly’s first album was heavily R&B, so she could lean towards Mariah’s soulful sound. The two seem like a perfect match, plus they’re both my favorites!!!

  • Eddie

I think Mariah can make a duet with anybody! She’s a soulful powerhouse. We all saw a Mariah/Whitney duet before & the song even won an OSCAR. Enough of that. Here are my top choices:
    Mariah/Aretha Franklin (2 divas back to back)perfect!
    Mariah/Alicia Keys (powerful soul/r&b)
    Mariah/Christina Aguilera (pitch power)

  • daniel

Mariah Carey can’t sing if her life depending on it. She’s a glorified dog whistle that sells her singles for 49 cents so they can be hits.

  • Will

Sorry to break it to you haterz, but Mariah and Whitney will definitely set the charts ablaze. Mariah would totally decimate Janet on a track. Get serious! You will never get a more soulful collabo in R&B.

  • Dee

How can Whitney sing in her situation. She’s hook and hopefully she will get help. I hope so because I miss her voice.

  • Ken

Maybe Janet can show Whitney some “black love” and help Whitney with her next doody bubble, now that Bobby is breaking free from her junky ways…

  • gary of la

let’s admit it folks, i’m not a fan, but mariah is the r & b queen. whoever sings with her will make it to the top of the chart!
