'Idol': The poetic words of Paula Abdul

171640__paula_lMove over, Jewel. There’s a new poet laureate of the pop music scene, and her name is Paula Abdul. While critics dismiss the loopy songbird’s weekly American Idol critiques as so much nonsense, I’ve recently discovered they’re actually kind of stirring (in a "Rush, Rush" sort of way) when transcribed in verse form. Don’t believe me? Check out this sampling of direct quotes from Tuesday night’s country-themed episode (with PopWatch-approved titles, natch):

Ode to Chris Daughtry
You showed versatility
And you still stayed true to who you are
What a concept!

A Man Named Bucky Covington

Again, you and Kellie
Probably shined most tonight
This is your element
Wear that hat proud

Mandisa, Mandisa!
You could sing the phone book
You can sing the encyclopedia
You can sing anything
Your voice is amazing
The song, for me, I don’t know
But I know your voice is…(applause)

Even Paris Bennett Gets the Blues
I felt like it was kind of a struggle
For you to find that place
Where you own the stage
Like you always do
Week after week

Being Katharine McPhee
That is your style
That’s your niche
You look sexy, hot…cool!

Paula,as well as the other judges, have already picked their favs to win. They may think some of the others are okay, but only a few are “STAR” material! I think the final two will be Chris and Elliot, if the judges have their way.I think they need not overlook Taylor,he’s a born entertainer, and Kelly, who has never had any training or experience, imagine what she could do with a little work!

  • Brian

I am now at the point of I dont care who wins as long as its not Bucky or Elliot, they are the worst.

  • Aramis

We lost “Arrested Development” for this show…need I say more?

  • Kate

    Wow…it almost reads like haiku!

  • Tim

Katharine is sultry. She’s using that and her sex appeal to her advantage. And I’m not overlooking the fact that she’s a good singer.

Mandisa gone??? Wow-THAT was a surprise. Do I think the controversy, which I am not even clear exactly what controversy it was, had anything to do with her being voted off? Yea..I do, sadly. Whether she is a Christian, was gay, is gay, has nothing at all to do with her singing on American Idol, folks! She was not my favorite but the girl had strong pipes. Sadly, I think her weight had something to do with it. I think people and the judges have gotten away from what American Idol is all about…THE SINGING! Judges promote with subtle (and sometimes not subtle) who they think they should win. This year started out the best American Idol Season ever! And it is being cloudied by some of the judges not knowing when to keep their mouths closed and stupid controversy surrounding some of the singers that has nothing to do with their singing and being on A.I. Lets get back to the concept of what American Idol is all about!

BLACK, OVERWEIGHT, AND CHRISTIAN; AMERICA THINKS IT IS OK TO BE BIGOTED AGAINST THESE THREE GROUPS. THAT IS A COMMON THEME. BUT LET ANYBODY SPEAK AGAINST HOMOSEXUALS, AND THE VULTURES WILL PICK THEM TO DEATH! MANDISA IS A GREAT TALENT THAT IS BEYOND THE LEAGUE OF THE REST, BUT SHE IS VOTED OFF BECAUSE OF BIGOTRY AGAINST HER LOOKS AND HER BELIEFS, NO OTHER REASON. WE ALL KNOW THAT IF WE ARE HONEST.

I THINK IT HAD SOMETHING TO WITH COLOR MORE SO THAN ANYTHING

  • Patrick

America, rightly or wrongly, judges people as a whole. If Ace were to get on stage and say he were gay, he would lose votes and I don’t think Terry (below) would see anything wrong with that…because he revealed his views on a television show. Mandisa could have picked any other singer to be an ‘Idol’ on her website. Personally, I was one of her biggest fans until I read that article. While I still dont ‘dislike’ her, it did affect my decision not to vote for her. It’s perfectly justified.

    Idol Musings

Ah, American Idol, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways. Each week, it’s ongoing procession of mediocre performances, bizarre competitors and even weirder judging comments provide compelling viewing. It’s mesmerizing, like a train wreck, from Buc…

haha– what!? since when is America bigoted against Christians? seriously, aren’t we living in Bush’s new theocracy? plus, last time i checked, racism was still on its way out– it’s like, so totally, 1950’s & dunzo.
now, fat people? that i’ll buy. America hates a fatty.
i will also agree, it was said to see Mandisa go when far-less talented singers like Bucky, Kellie, & Ace are still around. for the life of me, i can’t figure out why folks still “pick Pickler.” just the sight of her makes me physically want to retch.

  • Dale

I tend to appreciate Randy’s vibe more-
    you know
    dog
I’m just not feeling ya tonight
    just not feeling ya
I don’t know if it was the song choice
    or what
    but I watched you
and I’m just not feeling ya

  • Tommy

Did you all see that stand in for Kenny Rogers?? You mean that was really him???..Anyway, an American Idol is all encompassing. Looks (weight, hair, clothing style, teeth {Elliot}, singing, showmanship, dancing, character etc…Kathrine has it all…at least a little of each…Mandisa had great lungs, unfortunately overweight. Look at former hopefull Lisa Leuschner..great voice..overweight!! Anway…I have Kathrine as the overall winner!!

  • Lili

How can you say Americans are biggots. 2 of the past 4 winners were black, and one of those 2 was also fat.

  • JL

Thank you Lili – people who claim that AI is racist really are crazy if they think that is actually true. We’ve had four idols and half of those are black. Mandisa had two bad weeks in a row and I am not surprised at all that she was voted off. There is no way she would have won the competition anyway.

  • honeybears5758

whats with the racist comments? remeber folks you vote for the ones you like. or dont people of other races vote for their favorites. i never really understand why people get so upset when someone they like gets voted off. i guess you should have kept calling for the 2 hours after the show

  • Stephanie Travitsky

America is not biggoted. Jen Hudson was kicked off during the middle to the end of American Idol on season two and beat out Fantasia Barrino for a role in the movie version of Dreamgirls, so I believe that all hope is not lost. However this is a publicity game show ladies and gentlemen. If Simon Cowell is asked on late night television if the producers do not put their two cents in and vote as well, and he says no then that is baloney because THEY DO. Perhaps their votes are not the biggest percentage but the whole idea of the show is to prove who is marketable to the music buying concert going audience.

  • Annie

What are you sleeping with these people? Who cares!!! Noone with half an intelligent thought gives a crap about the lifes of any of these people, including the hosts. Noone is a bigot, but nice try, arn’t we americans always looking for an oppertunity to call someone a bigot. It’s like we get off on calling people racist or bigots. Listen the only racist left in this country live in trailor parks and drive el caminos and noone listens to a word they say (probably because you can’t get close enough to understand what they are spouting off about). So please just shut up about the bigotry, the show is a big venus fly trap and you fell into it, like they don’t know who is going to win before they even start. Good luck with the rest of the season I hope your sheep wins!

  • Patrick

Mandisa didn’t leave b/c she was fat or she was black. She left first and foremost because she had two very boring weeks.
She left second, because of the controversy of her anti-gay statements. Gay men watch American Idol like clockwork….and lots of them voted for her until the article came out.
Thirdly, if race had anything to do with it, it was due to the fact that it was a country themed week and lots of black viewers preferred not to watch..and who could blame them!!!!!

  • dma69

Sadly, this show has become not a talent show but a popularity contest. Why else would someone talented like Mandisa get the boot (not crazy about the bigotry though) but that annoying twit Kellie is still there?

  • Joe C

Michael, you have too much time on your hands. You need AIA(American Idol Anonymous)

  • newbie

This article is great! Now I know to listen as though it is all abstract verse–Good call! Now I just have to try to get rid of the shivers that the Rush,Rush reference gave me!!
For those arguing the racism or sizism of Mandisa getting voted off– I never caught the comment she made that apparently caused this controversy. What does concern is the fact that AI is clearly very sensitive to viewer feedback & had Ryan reference rumors to Katharine (the pregnancy) Chris (the Live credit theft) and Kellie (So, are you GENUINELY an idiot?), yet they never provided Mandisa the opportunity to clear her name. Make of that what you will, it speaks badly of them or of her. If it is purely a talent competition, there is no way she should have been sent home.

  • Kim

    Denise and Terry–
A black girl gets voted off Idol and let me guess, you scream racism. What an original defense! Why am I not surprised? Face the truth–it was time for Mandisa to go. White girls and white boys have been voted off do you hear them crying racism? STOP PLAYING THE RACE CARD EVERY TIME YOU DON’T GET YOUR WAY!!! GROW UP!!

Paul Abdul is as poetic as a toilet seat cover.

    Wednesday Is Poetry Day

Three poems by Randy Jackson, via Popwatch: Yo, yo Yo, yo. Yo, yo. Amazing, amazing. Loved the jacket. Loved you. Amazing. Yo, baby, Elliott Yo, baby, Elliott So check it out, dawg Elliott So check it out, man I hated…

  • Just Me

Paula is no poet. She does not have many original things to say either. I think the only time her words were truly her own was when she had no doubt that Bo would be in the finals.
