Prince to perform on 'American Idol'?

Categories: American Idol

Page Six is reporting that Prince will perform on American Idol to boost sales of his album, 3121, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts last week.

Hmmm…

It seems unlikely to me, but then again, the Purple One did perform on Saturday Night Live recently, presumably even hung around backstage playing a good sport as cast member Fred Armisen did his ruthlessly weird impression of him in a skit on the same show. So, who knows? Maybe Prince will muster up the courage to endure chit-chatting with Ryan Seacrest. Stranger things have happened. Like Under the Cherry Moon, for starters.

i can’t really see this happening…simply for the fact that his songs are so dirty! those fresh faced kids singing THOSE songs? Who is going to do “Darling Nikki”…or “Gett Off”? LOL

When is Prince going to come out?
    Its time Prince…come on OUT!

Probably “Cream” but if he wants to push buttons: “Sexy M.F.”. However the chances are that if he does do something that the FCC does not approve of, they will tell him to “Get Off”.

And last week Shakira was on Idol. What’s up with that? Anybody thinking, “ratings boost”?

It’s hard to think Prince would need to advertise. His new album has a golden ticket, and even without much publicity these last few years his albums and tickets to his tours still sell like hot cakes. Maybe he just misses being the center of attention?
But really, Idol does somehow seem like an odd venue for the Minneapolis based First Avenue discovered former Revolution leader.
I’d love to see him sing P*ssy Control live on stage. That song is hot!

I was disappointed Prince wasn’t in the sketch. They could have had duelling Princes, or something. But, the original has a weird comfort level.

Prince has gotten terrible reviews for the album, which, I’ll admit wasn’t quite worth the wait but is still quite enjoyable. It would be the ultimate revenge against his critics. The again, as he is number one (allthewhile outfoxing the labels, whom he uses for distribution), the former “slave” has already exacted his revenge.

I like Prince’s music but I find him the most arrogant and self-absorbed star.
I was at one of his concerts in Toronto in 2004 and my seat happened to be next to the entrance where the band made entered and exited the stage. And there Prince was watching opener Nelly Furtado. I just happened to look at him, and he looked at me with the coldest eyes and backed away. I was like, “please, I paid $100 bucks to see you at least you can do is crack a smile”. Get over yourself.

The contestants have lots of songs to choose from besides the obvious. He has written “I Feel For You” (Chaka Kahn), Nothing Compares 2 U (Sinead O’Connor), “Manic Monday” (The Bangles), etc.

OH SNAP! He wrote that Chaka Kahn song? I knew he had written a tune for Gwen Stefanie. Does anyone have a link to a list of songs Prince wrote for other artists? Methinks a trip to the mp3 store is in order…

Check out his greatest hits volumes 1 and 2. His versions of the first two songs are on there. By the way, did you know that Lenny Kravitz wrote “Justify my Love” for Madonna?

You guys need to expand your horizons on Prince. He has much more depth than the hits that he’s put out.
Prince appearing on American Idol is contradictory to what he’s all about. Prince is a composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, singer, etc. He’s the last of the independent spirits that we have left in the music industry. American idol doesn’t ecourage the music industry to head in that direction of artistic freedom. It’s a puppet show. It manufactures puppets that will become a successful marketing package. Artistic freedom & expression of music itself is last on American Idol’s list of priorities. Prince is a business man & a pretty good one at that. Most musicians couldn’t say the same. But the difference with Prince is that it’s about the music first.

How different would the results be if Prince did help the contestants as a weekly challenge? Does anybody know which week he would have been? Would it have been down to 4? Probably, considering they replaced Prince with the King? I wonder if Taylor could have survived that round. I still love him.
