'Prison Break': How they all got in

Categories: Prison Break

112154__rdunbar_lMichael’s attempt to seek a new escape plan was put on hold so the Prison Break producers can tell us what they think we want to know: that most of these jailbirds are victims of really bad circumstance and don’t belong in the Big House. Take our martyr, Lincoln: turns out big bro was just trying to pay back a $90,000 debt he incurred to put his sib through school so he agreed to "kill" the already-dead brother of the vice president! Fernando’s just a petty thief trying to impress his girlfriend, Dr. Sara is a recovering morphine addict, and C-Note (pictured) is a disillusioned family man trying to make ends meet after witnessing Abu Ghraib-like abuse that led to his dishonorable discharge from the military. T-Bag, we learn, is the only lout deserving of a permanent stay in prison for killing a bunch of coeds.

Fortunately, those teases in the Break writers’ room threw us a few bones in this otherwise infuriating flashback sequence: more detail on why the V.P. and her secret service thugs were so hellbent on framing Lincoln. She was protecting her business-owning bro, who’s clearly still alive, sipping OJ in a secluded mansion and giving his dentures a good soak (ah, so now we know how that imposter in the ground had Terrence’s old teeth!).

So what did you think of this episode?

How long is it going to take them to stage this break out? At the pace they are moving, it would be faster for me to hire a camera crew, get tatooed, walk to Fox River (from DC), break into Fox River, then Break out. But you know I’ll totally be here next Tuesday talking about the show…
What’s up with Fox tv have all this stuff named “fox” in it? Fox Mulder, Fox River. There are no characters named “CBS” on “How I met your Mother”.

I MISSED IT LAST NIGHT!! I knew there was something IMPORTANT I had to do!! My brain cells are failing me…
Did I miss a GREAT episode? Doesn’t sound like it, by the comments…

  • Ep Sato

Don’t let my whining confuse you. The show is awesome and my angry comments are from that “love it so much it can frustrate me” point of view.

Great episode, though a bit too LOST-like with the chance encounters between some characters (Lincoln and Fernando) and the pre-show relationship between Sara and the lead guard. In all, though, thumbs up because anytime we get some bonus T-Bag time is always fun.

While most viewers want this break to happen already, I liked last nights episode. We know why Michael feels so indebted towards Lincoln now. Who knew Lincoln gave up his life to make sure Michael would have a pretty comfortable one. And Dr. Sara as a junkie. Did anyone see that one coming. There’s no doubt that her past is going to play a part in the storyline from now on.
As for the criminals we learnt that C-Note is there because he was unjustly did in by the Military, then forced to talk a job running illegal goods. Sucre is in prison out of pure stupidity and a cousin who wanted him out of Mari-Cruz’s life. And well T-Bag, we were re-affirmed that he’s scum.
There’s 6 episodes left this season and its pretty much a given that the break is going to happen so things should really start to escalate now.

  • mgm

Yeah, I figured it was a GREAT show no matter what. I also “love it… ” and it’s hard to wait for the next episode (on a Monday!) I just can’t believe I missed it.

  • Fatima

oh quiet. It was a great episode.

I enjoyed last night’s show. It made me more excited for the break-out (will T-Bag really remember the ladies’ porch, and if so, what will he do?), more empathetic towards others (hey, C-Note), more understanding of why Michael went in (hello, guilt!), surprised (Sara an addict?), confused (why no flashbacks of the ‘rich’ ol’ man?), and curious (so, how painful is teeth removal anyway?). And besides, there’s only so many times a guard could almost walk in on the hole-digging. This series has never been perfect (remember when it started and everyone was like ‘you’ll have to get past the implausibilities?’), but it continues to suck me in.

  • Patricia

I was distracted by all their shaved heads. I mean, did none of them (except T-Bag) have hair 3 years ago? I was hoping for some ‘fros, mullets, etc. Ah, well, still a good show.

  • The Other Kyle

I liked the episode. Interesting character points on all the escapees.
I know the writers are just trying to make the characters more sympathetic but come on….you’re telling me it just so happens that the entire crew that has been let into the plan happen to all be really good guys (except T-bag) who are victims of manipulation and circumstance?
I know this show requires some suspension of disbelief but that’s asking a lot.
I liked it better when these men could all be dangerous. Now they’re all just puppy dogs to me, except T-bag.

  • David

I appreciated how rich with background information and character insight this episode was. It seemed like absolutely no time was wasted. Running this episode was a clever move because, while it wasn’t really necessary, it made me feel like I was being being let in on a whole bunch of secrets. And the episode was wholly entertaining, of course! Prison Break needed this episode to reinvigorate the fans’ interest in these characters. I think it worked. Who’s with me?

  • 42man

It was one of the best episodes this season. Period.

I loved it–the only way to really enjoy this show is to just let it flow–not to analyze the credibility, but to enjoy the surprises (I must admit that the bit about Sara really shocked me and I was surprised at the attraction between Michael and Linc’s girl)and to experience the really great acting. I could watch Wentworth Miller’s mind work all day and not just because he is so great looking. He did a great job of showing how Michael went from feeling superior to Linc to feeling guilty. The hour just flew by. I personally don’t care if they ever get out–watching them try is so compelling.

I am so sick of this apparent trend in TV this year of the U.S. military all being a bunch of corrupt torturers. First we get it on Lost, now we get it on Prison Break. Give me a break. The Iraqis are some of the most heinous, ruthless torturers in the world – believe me, I’ve seen the pictures of victims that one of my army friends took first hand. He also told me about many times that they had to let the enemy get away, because they would have had to hurt civilians in order to get them. Believe me, the U.S. military is a heck of a lot more considerate of people then the media and hollywood would have you believe.
You know, I actually have several friends who are in the military, and one who is currently in Iraq right now. At a time when our guys are over there fighting and dying, it is really, REALLY disrespectful to keep depicting the U.S. military in this way. It is hard for them to keep their morale up over there when all they hear is all this negativity and hatred about them in the media and in television/movies. Please, out of respect to these brave people, save all the anti-war/anti-military stuff until AFTER they are out of harms way.

    Why, Sara, why????????????????????
Did not see that twist coming a mile away!!!

  • mgf

i liked the background and how u could see the prep work before Michael goes into prison (the research on other immates etc) Notice there was nothing on the old dude…… he is SO dying. Oh well.

  • dma69

The only thing that bothered me about this otherwise great episode is the Sucre part. If you have to resort to petty theft to impress a girl, there’s a possibility she’s not worth the trouble. And you may not want to hang around your back-stabbing “I’m just looking out for you” cousin so much.

  • Amelia

Sweet show. I loved seeing the background, and it was a break from all the prison suspense. It’s also good to know that the show can be good when OUTSIDE the prison.

  • t3hdow

Uh, Anne, you’re taking the military torturing thing a little too seriously, especially for a show where so many illogical things occur. I respect the military more than ever and it’s not like PB’s exploitation of them is going to make me hate them, unlike Jane Fonda during Vietnam. They’re the real people who should be upset. They’re the ones who got treated like crap after the war, unlike the soldiers of today no thanks to her.
Military ranting aside, I thought this episode was probably the weakest of the series thus far. It isn’t that I didn’t appreciate the flashbacks, but I thought the episode was too underdeveloped. The Michael/Lincoln storyline was decent, but everything else felt too brief and didn’t present the group of characters with the riveting storytelling the show usually does so well. It seems like everyone was thrown in jail, because they’re victims of misfortune and/or stupidity, sans T-Bag. This episode would’ve been better if it were extended into a 90 minute one, but that would’ve taken us away from the juice of the show: the acts inside the prison. I’m ok with a flashback episode – especially considering I watch Lost, which is full of them – but I thought it could’ve been better.

  • Mike in Moncton

Easily the worst PB episode so far. Basically this one made all the jailbirds look like saints before they were incarcirated; like they don’t deserve to be in there. They screwed up just once, and now they’re in the slammer! So we HAVE to believe now that they’re worthy of breaking out!
What happened to the shades of grey characters that it looked like PB was developing?? Turns out these are just about ALL good guys in jail who don’t really belong there. They even had us thinking T-bag was a good guy, despite the fact he offed a bunch of kids!
I hope they get back on track next week.

  • Stacy

I thought this episode was great!!! I really don’t mind that most of the characters are sort of good, get over it people. We still have t-bag who KILLED 6 CHILDREN!!!!! Which I think is enough bad for all of them.
Also once they break out, the whole series will probaly be alot like this, so try to get use to it.

  • t3hdow

    To Stacy:
It’s not that I don’t mind the prisoners being seen as saints. I just thought the characterization was rather shallow and fast, which made it slightly unbelievable on how the show presents the characters and the transformation to the people they are today. Even the Michael/Linclon storyline didn’t feel totally convincing on how Michael hated his brother and then did a 180 and devoted the next few years of his life on breaking him out. Something else had to affect Michael to do something so radical instead of simply realizing his brother’s going to the prison he helped design. Sara’s transformation from addict to doctor was rather rushed too. And come on…you can’t make me believe Sucre was so stupid to rob the same convenient store twice to impress his girlfriend. Considering the issues they’ve had on the show, you think we should’ve seen a little more depth other than seeing them sleep with each other. What made PB’s characterization so rich is because every character has ulterior motives and like Mike said, they’re in many shades of gray. The flashback episode lacked any real depth and streamlined through everyone’s story, making it hard to re-think how we feel towards the characters. It would’ve been better if they did it like Lost and simply flash a bit of everyone’s past here and there or even extended this episode.
Don’t get me wrong. I love this tension-filled series to death and enjoy all the conspiracies going on inside and outside the prison and will no doubt enjoy what might happen outside the prison later in the story, but this episode just lacked the depth that made all the other episodes great.
