Andy Samberg: 'SNL's new breakout star

Categories: Saturday Night Live

93534__andy_lRemember when all we could talk about was how funny the ladies of Saturday Night Live are? Well, they still are, but new cast member Andy Samberg seems to be this season’s breakout star. The viral potential of SNL’s digital short films (Lazy Sunday, Natalie Raps) has raised Samberg’s profile enough to nab him a starring movie role.

In Hot Rod, Samberg will play an amateur daredevil who attempts stunts performed by Evel Knievel to win over his stepfather. Sounds like Will Ferrell territory to me — here’s hoping it’s his Old School and not his Anchorman. Me, I’d rather see him in the big-screen version of The ‘Bu, an O.C. spoof concocted by Samberg and his comic cohorts at Lonely Island (and co-starring Scrubs‘ Sarah Chalke, incidentally).

What do you think? Andy Samberg, Movie Star? Can you see it?

He’s been on less than one whole season. Although he’s had some good moments, it’s been a pretty bad season. Will Farrell and Jimmy Fallon were on the show for three or four years before they landed a starring role.

The internet kicks things up a notch. I’d love to see an EW article on “Internet Stars,” celebrities who used the internet to get to their game on the next level — i.e, Dane Cook and, now Andy Samberg.

  • Dan Taylor

Yeah, why would you want it to be his ANCHORMAN? A laugh-out-loud comedy that will stand the test of time while OLD SCHOOL’s rep will be irreparably damaged by the ill-advised OLD SCHOOL 2.

I’m with Jim. Although Samberg is appealing, he hasn’t even completed a full (mediocre-at-best) season of SNL. Isn’t this too much too soon.
Also, I think we can all pretty much agree that Samberg’s best stuff has been the digital shorts…emphasis on the word “shorts”. Do people really want to see this guy CARRY a 90 minute movie? Can he even do it? Ferrell broke through with “Old School”, but he certainly wasn’t asked to carry it. I think, if anything, a flashy supporting role (much like the role of “The Viking” in Natalie raps) would be more advisable.
One more thing: I realize “Anchorman” ain’t Shakespeare, but it’s still consistently laugh-out loud funny and infinitely quotable, so lay off Mickey!

Woah, that Natalie Portman thing is awesome. Holy crap, I think I’m in love.

Yo, Anchorman is funny. It got overshadowed by Dodgeball, but it makes me laugh a lot more.

Old School is great, but Anchorman is one of the funniest movies in years! I oughta punch you in your ovary for trashing it. A LA JOLLA MAN CLINGS TO LIIIFE!

  • Tom Brazelton

I also do not understand the dig against Anchorman. It’s MUCH funnier than Old School – a film Ferrell was not asked to carry, by the way.
I agree that this is too much too soon. Ferrell was on SNL for how long? Seven years? He still had to earn his stripes in supporting roles before taking on leads.
Look at Jimmy Fallon. He was on the show maybe three or four years, started to believe his own hype, left the show and made Taxi.
Whose example should Samberg follow? The answer is obvious!

To be fair to my boy Jimmy, his next movie, Fever Pitch made money. That’s amazing for ex-SNLers. The jury is still out.

  • Missy

    I think hes a hottie!

  • Nick

To be fair to _Fever Pitch_, to say it made money is to ignore the obvious: it barely cleared the $39 Mil production budget, but advertising revenues ate that up quickly. Further, it’s considered a disappointment from the Farrely brothers, a disappointment for Nick Hornby fans, and perhaps the only folks who bought a copy were Red Sox Fans. I’m happy for them, good for miracle stories, but who knew there were so *few* of them?!?

  • Melissa

Anchorman rocks. Glad to see other people made that commment already. I think it’s a bit early for him to be making movies, but he’s funny so I’d be interested in seeing it.

he’s the best thing about the show this season. and i have a huge crush on him.

  • mon

the boy definitely shows potential and he’s too cute, but i would side with the folks who think maybe he should hone his craft a little longer, but maybe we’ll all be wrong…he’s definitely got a creative mind!
as for the old school/anchorman topic, i didn’t find anchorman that funny the first time around, but it was a slow burn…it just got funnier the more i thought about it and the supporting cast was hilarious!

That Natalie Portman $hit is SO FUNNY!!!! I hadn’t seen it until now. Still, the Chronic-what-cles “Lazy Sunday” is still the best short of ALL TIME.
